History
In April of 1904 an astonishing event changed the life of Aleister Crowley: poet, mystic and Golden Dawn occultist. While he and his wife, Rose, were vacationing in Egypt a mysterious entity initiated contact with the couple. First the voice moved Rose to lead Crowley to the funerary stele of an ancient Egyptian priest named Ankh-af-na-Khonsu. Later Crowley heard the voice over the course of three days. The voice, which belonged to a divine entity, commanded Crowley to transcribe his words, culminating in a piece of writing called Liber AL vel Legis, sub figura CCXX

click here to go directly to the links The following collection of links explores one of the more interesting, controversial and important movements within the modern revival of esoteric study, practice, ethics, sexuality and politics. It is important to stress the diversity of ideas and practices of its adherents. As to Crowley its founder, much slanderous nonsense and wildly romanticized praise has been unfairly attached to him. Criticizing Crowley's personality and behavior is much too simplistic for such an intriguing combination of self-proclaimed messiah and avant garde artist in a variety of mediums. Still, I think that the following quotation by the renowned Chaos Magician Peter Carroll is worth repeating, since Crowley's own journals lend considerable credence to the assessment. As Gerald Yorke commented to a friend of mine, "you would not have liked him if you had met him." Indeed, I'm sure that the few things Aleister would have requested of any of his contemporary followers had he still been around would have been wallet, worship, girlfriend and arsehole. This is not the style of mastership which interests me personally. (interview with Peter Carroll Abrasax Magazine, Vol.5, No.2.)

    Introduction to Thelema
Thelema , as a Law and as a concept, is only thoroughly explained in The Book Of The Law , a smallish text which can be obtained at most occult or new age stores for about $5-10 or so, and which can probably always be ordered from the O.T.O. The College of Thelema has an online version of The Book Of The Law Thelema is a Greek word which means "Will", and which computes to the value of 93 in Greek Gematria, or numerology. Agape is a Greek word which means "Love", and which also equates to 93. Under the basic concepts of Gematria, this demonstrates a relationship between these two words. In the Law of Thelema , this relationship is explored at some length, and this is the driving force behind the entire Law. The Law is given, for the current era, to all of humankind in the form of the aforementioned book, The Book of the Law , written in 1904 by Awaiss, and transcribed by Aleister Crowley over a period of three days.

THE CULT OF THE INFINITE Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. Thelema is a philosophical and religious tradition developed through the teachings and writings of Aleister Crowley (1875-1947 EV ), a multifaceted, enigmatic, and oftentimes contraversial British Figure. Crowley is known primarily for his achievements in mountain climbing, his talent for poetry, and most importantly, his involvement in the Occult Revival of the late 1800's and early 1900's. His intelligent treatment of the subjects of Magick and Mysticism in his periodical The Equinox and in his magnus opus Magick in Theory and Practice proved to be very influential and are largely responsible for many trends in occult thought and practice existing to this very day.
In addition to his advances in the realm of Occultism, Crowley is a self-professed Prophet and Gnostic Saint. He considered the high point of his life, his very purpose for existance (i.e. his True Will) to be the reception of Liber L. vel Legis ("The Book of the Law") in 1904 in Cairo, Egypt. In modern terms, The Book of the Law can be considered a "received" or "channeled" communication. In the book

Greetings in the Golden Dawn of Thelema!
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
This is simply not true. There is, in fact, such a thing as The Order of the
Thelemic Golden Dawn (T.G.D.). It has been alive and growing for almost nine
years. And our Will is One: The Great Work of Thelema! Our ceremonies of
initiation, instructions and oaths are not the same as those of the Hermetic
Order of the Golden Dawn. The only TGD ceremony of initiation that has any significant degree of similarity to any of the Hermetic Golden Dawn ceremonies of initiation is the Neophyte ceremony, and this is based on the universal formula/nature of that ceremony, but it has been so modified to accord with the liberating principles of the Law of Thelema and the initiatory structure and system of the Order of the Thelemic Golden Dawn. What does this have to do with the Thelemic Golden Dawn? You never see any of

Joy, Sorrow, and Thelema Posted by Matt on Wednesday April 17, @08:21AM
    from the shadow-of-the-wings dept.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the concept of Joy and Sorrow in relation to Thelema. AL II:9 addresses it directly (and in several other places as well). When I first read this passage, I agreed with it somehow, I had always believed that in my heart. Yet, on another level, I recognize that perhaps I only feel this way because I live in a rich country, better than the majority of the world. My "sorrows" are only temporary and, ultimately, minor.
Does believing that the "sorrows are shadows" dull us to the pain of others? Also, reading Crowley's writing, he seemed to define joy as the destruction of duality. Yet the word "joy" implies that sorrow is possible isn't that duality?
