THE OCEAN OF THEOSOPHY
By
WILLIAM Q. JUDGE
PREFACE PREFACE TO TENTH EDITION
CONTENTS
CHAPTER I
THEOSOPHY AND THE MASTERS Theosophy generally defined. The existence of highly developed men in the Universe. These men are the Mahatmas, Initiates, Brothers, Adepts. How they work and why they remain now concealed. Their Lodge. They are perfected men from other periods of evolution. They have had various names in history. Apollonius, Moses, Solomon, and others were members of this fraternity. They had one single doctrine. They are possible because man may at last be as they are. They keep the true doctrine and cause it to reappear at the right time. CHAPTER II
GENERAL PRINCIPLES CHAPTER III
THE EARTH CHAIN The doctrine respecting the Earth. It is sevenfold also. It is one of a chain of seven corresponding to man. The whole seven are not in a chain separated as to members, but they interpenetrate each other. The Earth chain is the reincarnation of a former old and now dead chain. This old chain was one of which our moon is the visible representative. Moon now dead and contracting. Venus, Mars, etc., are living members of other similar chains to ours. A mass of Egos for each chain. The number, though incalculable, is definite. Their course of evolution through the seven globes. In each a certain part of our nature is developed. At the fourth globe the process of condensation is begun and reaches its limit. CHAPTER IV
SEPTENARY CONSTITUTION OF MAN The constitution of man. How the doctrine differs from the ordinary Christian one. The real doctrine known in the first centuries of this era, but purposely withdrawn from a nation not able to bear it. The danger if the doctrine had not been withdrawn. The sevenfold division. The principles classified. The divisions agree with the chain of seven globes. The lower man is a composite being. His higher trinity. The lower four principles transitory and perishable. Death leaves the trinity as the only persistent part of us. What the physical man is, and what the other unseen mortal man is. A second physical man not seen but still mortal. The senses pertain to the unseen man and not to the visible one.

"Remember that life is the outcome of the Ever-Living. If you have come to comprehend a little of the mystery of life, and can value its attractions according to their worth; these are no reasons why you should walk forth with solemn countenance to blight the enjoyments of other men. Life to them is as real, as the mystery is to you. Their time will come as yours has, so hasten it for them, if you can, by making life brighter, more joyous, better."
from Musings On The True Theosophist's Path William Q. Judge was born in Dublin, Ireland. He emigrated to the United States with his family when he was 13 years old. At age 21, he became a naturalized citizen. That same year he passed the New York state bar exam. As an attorney, he specialized in commercial law. In 1874, Judge met Col. H. S. Olcott and, through him, H.P. Blavatsky. The following year the three were instrumental in founding the Theosophical Society. Following the publication of HPB's book, Isis Unveiled (1877), HPB and Olcott went to India to establish the TS there, leaving Judge to carry on the work in the United States. They corresponded regularly and Judge visited India in 1884. After his return he started a monthly magazine

Introduction.
Did you ever wonder why there is such a big gap between science and religion? Did you ever see a possibility of bridging this gap? As a scientist and psychologist I can clearly see the narrow limits to which science has confined itself. As regards religions, most of them have big trouble to present a clear, consistent philosophy of life. Neither of them can answer urgent ethical questions satisfactorily. So we face the strange situation of science, claiming certain theories to be a fact of life, while religion claims other visions to be true. Now, common-sense-logic demands that there is one truth; at least we cannot embrace two essentially different opinions about life and nature. In fact there is an old philosophy called Wisdom-Religion that claims just to bridge this gap. Nowadays this philosophy is called Theosophy, brought to the West by H.P. Blavatsky under guidance and inspiration of her teachers (the Masters of Wisdom and Compassion). This will be the subject of this document. At this place it will be proper to state that this is not just a fancy philosophy, but, on the contrary, a grand system of truths based on the spiritual visions of thousands of wise men, prophets and great founders of religions through the ages. This philosophy can and should be tested by all serious searchers for truth. Theosophy gives some guidelines how this should be done. At the end of this document this will become clearer (if not, put your questions and I will discuss it). It is most certainly a practical philosophy of life, what will become apparent if you apply its principles to daily life.

30. Was Theosophy Suborned?
A critical view of Blavatsky by Alexis Dolgorukii. Yelena Petrovna Blavatskaya is a hero to him, despite the fact he has a perception of her and her work that is not orthodox.
http://www.parascience.org/suborn.htm
WAS THEOSOPHY SUBORNED?
What exactly happened to theosophy? Nothing really, it is NOT theosophy itself, which as I believe I have adequately demonstrated in my previous essay, is a process and an intellectual attitude, which has been suborned or changed in any way.
It is what the various Theosophical Societies were, have been, and are becoming, that is the question. It is NOT theosophy itself which has been suborned, it is the organizations which claim to present the process to humanity, that seem to have been suborned. I believe I have exhaustively discussed what is wrong with The Theosophical societies in their present incarnations in the essay "WHAT IS THEOSOPHY?". So then, having dealt with what is wrong with The Institution, I need to discuss how it went wrong and why.
But the far more important question I have come to see needs to be asked is this:
WERE THE VARIOUS THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETIES EVER AS THEY SEEMED? WHERE THEIR CLAIMS MERELY "COVER" FOR ANOTHER SET OF GOALS AND AGENDAS ALTOGETHER.
Nowhere is this question more urgently to be asked then in connection with the original and quite frankly the ONLY VALID Theosophical Society. The other so-called theosophical societies were simply the results of relatively inane ego-based personality disputes which took place after the death of H.P.B., or simply "Cults of Personality" which formed around certain charismatic theosophists such as Rudolf Steiner and Katherine Tingley.

INTRODUCTION
THEOSOPHY AS SCIENCE    THEOSOPHY AS MORALITY AND ART THEOSOPHY AS PHILOSOPHY ... THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY INTRODUCTION
Theosophy is derived from two Greek words –Theos , God; Sophia, Wisdom –and is therefore God-Wisdom, Divine Wisdom. Any dictionary will give its meaning : “A claim to a direct knowledge of God and of Spirits”, a definition which is not inaccurate, though it is scanty and affords but a small idea of all that is covered by the word, either historically or practically. The obtaining of “a direct knowledge of God” is –as we shall see in dealing with the religious aspect of Theosophy –the ultimate object of all Theosophy, as it is the very heart and life of all true Religion; this is “the highest knowledge, the knowledge of Him by whom all else is known”; but the lower knowledge, that of the knowable "all else”, and the methods of knowing it, bulk largely in Theosophical study. This is natural enough, for the supreme knowledge must be gained by each for himself, and little can be done by another, save by pointing to the way, by inspiring to the effort, by setting the example; whereas the lower knowledge may be taught in books, in lectures, in conversation, is transmissible from mouth to ear.

theosophy
"We assert that the divine spark in man being one and identical in its essence with the Universal Spirit, our "spiritual Self" is practically omniscient, but that it cannot manifest its knowledge owing to the impediments of matter. Now the more these impediments are removed, in other words, the more the physical body is paralyzed, as to its own independent activity and consciousness, as in deep sleep or deep trance, or, again, in illness, the more fully can the inner Self manifest on this plane. This is our explanation of those truly wonderful phenomena of a higher order, in which undeniable intelligence and knowledge are exhibited. " [Madame Blavatsky] "...we are imprisoned in the body, like an oyster in his shell." [The Socrates of Plato, Phaedrus To the philosopher, the body is "a disturbing element, hindering the soul from the acquisition of knowledge..." "...what is purification but...the release of the soul from the chains of the body?"

Our Intelligent Companions, the Plants
By John Van Mater, Jr. We take it for granted that plants are essential for maintaining our ecosystem, for producing oxygen, and providing the primary food source in a vast chain to which man belongs. But plant intelligence also reflects a soul-life and consciousness, which is an overall unifying factor. How the vegetable kingdom first emerged and became established is mysterious. Plants have been evolving for many hundreds of millions of years as have minerals, viruses, and bacteria. One of the oldest fossils of any living form appears to be a microscopic plant, a bacterium, trapped in a type of black chert rock in Swaziland, Africa, and reckoned to date back over three billion years. A simpler colonial relative of blue-green algae is dated at 2.8 billion years. Flowering plants suddenly appeared approximately one hundred million years ago towards the latter half of the Cretaceous Age. In each era the right plants occupied the proper places and adjusted to prevailing conditions along with the animals that went with them. As the ages followed one another, the plants proliferated and helped to set the stage. A vital exchange among the kingdoms mineral, plant, and animal serves to produce climates and conditions appropriate to the time. Possibly the first single-celled plants or algae started the sophisticated process called photosynthesis; this involves the transfer of light energy into chemical energy via chlorophyll. When algae suddenly arrive on the scene in the fossil records, their genetic material along with photosynthesis is already evolved and in place. How could this be unless intelligence indeed intelligences were operating behind the scenes?

35. "What Is Theosophy?" By H. P. Blavatsky
What Is theosophy? by HP Blavatsky. According correct. But the explanationsthat follow are far from giving a clear idea of theosophy.
http://www.theosophy-nw.org/theosnw/theos/th-hpb.htm
What Is Theosophy?
by H. P. Blavatsky According to lexicographers, the term theosophia is composed of two Greek words theos "god," and sophos "wise." So far, correct. But the explanations that follow are far from giving a clear idea of Theosophy. Webster defines it most originally as "a supposed intercourse with God and superior spirits, and consequent attainment of superhuman knowledge, by physical processes, as by the theurgic operations of some ancient Platonists, or by the chemical processes of the German fire-philosophers." Vaughan offers a far better, more philosophical definition. "A Theosophist," he says "is one who gives you a theory of God or the works of God, which has not revelation, but an inspiration of his own for its basis." In this view every great thinker and philosopher, especially every founder of a new religion, school of philosophy, or sect, is necessarily a Theosophist. Hence, Theosophy and Theosophists have existed ever since the first glimmering of nascent thought made man seek instinctively for the means of expressing his own independent opinions. Theosophy is, then, the archaic
