NICHIREN
Turn your minds and entrust yourselves at once to the singular Truth of the Righteous Way. Then you will see that the three realms of existence are the Kingdom of Buddha, which is in no way subject to decay, and that the worlds in the ten quarters are all lands of treasures, which are never to be destroyed. The kingdom is changeless and the lands eternal. How, then, shall your life be other than secure and your mind other than serene in Enlightenment? Rissho Ankokuron NICHIREN Japanese Buddhists were concerned with mappo, the period of degeneracy in which buddhadharma, the Teaching of Buddha, was thought to be obscured and even lost. As the ancient imperial ideal was enervated by the rise of samurai who held effective power, Japan almost seemed to many thinkers to become illustrative of mappo. Whilst Japanese Buddhists could revere China and aspire to journey to India, they knew that the Buddhist tradition had degenerated amongst the Chinese and had virtually disappeared in the land of its founder. Although some devotees were content with laconic pessimism, others nurtured a variety of desultory responses to mappo.

Theosophical Home
Theosophy
Theosophy is the shoreless ocean of universal truth, love, and wisdom, reflecting its radiance on the earth, while the Theosophical Society is only a visible bubble on that reflection. Theosophy is divine nature, visible and invisible, and its Society human nature trying to ascend to its divine parent. Theosophy, finally, is the fixed eternal sun, and its Society the evanescent comet trying to settle in an orbit to become a planet, ever revolving within the attraction of the sun of truth.

"We assert that the divine spark in man being one and identical in its essence with the Universal Spirit, our "spiritual Self" is practically omniscient, but that it cannot manifest its knowledge owing to the impediments of matter. Now the more these impediments are removed, in other words, the more the physical body is paralyzed, as to its own independent activity and consciousness, as in deep sleep or deep trance, or, again, in illness, the more fully can the inner Self manifest on this plane. This is our explanation of those truly wonderful phenomena of a higher order, in which undeniable intelligence and knowledge are exhibited. " [Madame Blavatsky] "...we are imprisoned in the body, like an oyster in his shell." [The Socrates of Plato, Phaedrus To the philosopher, the body is "a disturbing element, hindering the soul from the acquisition of knowledge..." "...what is purification but...the release of the soul from the chains of the body?"

King Priyardarshi says:
I commanded this edict on Dharma to be engraved twenty-six years after my coronation.
It is difficult to achieve happiness, either in this world or in the next, except by intense love of Dharma, intense self-examination, intense obedience, intense fear of evil and intense enthusiasm. Yet as a result of my instruction, regard for Dharma and love of Dharma have increased day by day and will continue to increase.

I ASHOKA Shakyamuni Buddha taught and guided his followers for fifty years after his Enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. His fundamental message was simply expressed in his first sermon, but the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path were of such spiritual simplicity that monks and laymen alike found them difficult to practise. The reality of dukha, suffering due to avidya, Within a year of the Buddha's Parinirvana, the Sangha gathered together its members and attempted to set down the public teachings of the Enlightened One. Ananda was requested to recite all he knew, since he had been the constant companion and personal attendant of the Buddha. His words, supplemented by the recollections of others, engendered the earliest form of the Tripitaka

49. Theosophy Library Online - Great Teacher Series - EPICTETUS
Summary of the life and teachings of Cleanthes. From the Great Teacher Series of the theosophy Library.
http://theosophy.org/tlodocs/teachers/Epictetus.htm
EPICTETUS
Consider who you are: to begin with, you are a human being, that is, one who has no quality more sovereign than moral choice, and who holds everything else subordinate to it, and moral choice itself free from slavery and subjection.... In addition to this you are a citizen of the world and a part of it. EPICTETUS Epictetus was born in the middle of the first century A.D. at Hierapolis in Phrygia, a region in Asia Minor known for its enthusiastic devotion to ancient deities. Little is known of his life, and even his name may be a pseudonym, for epiktetos means 'acquired', Epictetus being a slave from birth. His strong will and self-control manifested early in life. While still young, his master put his leg in a device for torture. "You will break my leg", Epictetus said quietly, and when his leg was in fact broken, he calmly added, "Did I not tell you so?" As a consequence of this cruelty, he was lame for life. Taken to Rome, he was owned by Epaphroditus, an administrative secretary to Nero. His master sent him to take lessons from Gaius Musonius Rufus, a creative and courageous Stoic whom Apollonius of Tyana defended before the emperor and who was later driven into exile. Epictetus eventually won his freedom and settled in Rome to teach philosophy. He was deeply struck by the teachings of Musonius, and attempted to assimilate them thoroughly rather than produce doctrines of his own invention. Following the example of Socrates, Epictetus wrote nothing for preservation, though he made notes for his own use in discussions. He devoted his whole life at Nicopolis to philosophy, travelling only once to Athens and possibly to Olympia. Nevertheless, his reputation as a teacher spread throughout the Greek-speaking world, and Flavius Arrianus, a historian from Bithynia, became his most devoted disciple. For a number of years Arrian recorded the discourses of Epictetus, preserving for future generations both the recorded teachings and the oral methods of instruction of his master. These were published largely in their original stenographic form after his death as the

Bold statements are made in it upon the knowledge of the writer, but at the same time it is distinctly to be understood that he alone is responsible for what is therein written: the Theosophical Society is not involved in nor bound by anything said in the book, nor are any of its members any the less good Theosophists because they may not accept what I have set down. The tone of settled conviction which may be thought to pervade the chapters is not the result of dogmatism or conceit, but flows from knowledge based upon evidence and experience. Members of the Theosophical Society will notice that certain theories or doctrines have not been gone into. That is because they could not be treated without unduly extending the book and arousing needless controversy.
