Unfortunatly many excellent books are out of print or so highly specialized that it would give no sense to mention them here. Anyhow, I hope that this small collection covers most fields and levels of Tibetan Buddhism. At the end of my descriptions I often mention if the book is more Mahayana or more Vajrayana orientated, even though the borders between those two ways of understanding and practicing are fluid. Where ever I could, I also marked which of the four main lineages or traditions (Nyingma, Shakyapa, Kagyu, Gelugpa) this text represents. An Upala flower (Paeonia) marks a book with many eye catching pictures and a good design. I will update this page as often as possible. So revisit from time to time. New titles are marked with this symbol!

Advice From the Lotus-Born This is the true training of the Great Perfection, Dzogchen. The translation is superior. Yeshe Tsogyel received this heart advice in the meditation hermitage, Samye Chimpu , in Central Tibet. As far as a direct transmission in the form of a book, this edition is amazing. Clear, vibrant, direct!! with in depth training. Padmasambhava was said to be born from a lotus flower. He is one of the greatest teachers in all of Tibet. Lady Tsogyel, a great practitioner and realized being requested and received instructions on how to join her activity with the great perfect innate nature of dharmata. Padmasambhava's teachings are known as a treasury of precious jewels. For anyone going deeply into Buddhist training, this is a must read. For those wishing the deepest training on the nature of mind, this is a must read. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Page by page, the dharma unfolds in a quiet dramatic way. May all benefit from the training in the Great Perfection. by Eve L. Mullen
Abstract [1] Many contemporary American popular films are presenting us with particular views of Tibetan Buddhism and culture. Unfortunately, the views these movies present are often misleading. In this essay I will identify four false characterizations of Tibetan Buddhism, as described by Tibetologist Donald Lopez, characterizations that have been refuted by post-colonial scholarship. I will then show how these misleading characterizations make their way into three contemporary films, Seven Years in Tibet Kundun and Little Buddha . Finally, I will offer an explanation for the American fascination with Tibet as Tibetan culture is represented in these films. Article Seven Years in Tibet Kundun and Little Buddha ; and third, offer an explication based on a psychological model of the commercial creators of such popularizations and the American society which consumes them. Tibetan Buddhism
    by Ken Holmes The Karmapas
Text courtesy of London Samye Dzong The Kagyu tradition is one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. It is renowned for its emphasis on meditation as embodied by such great masters as Marpa, Milarepa and Gampopa, whose example inspired people throughout Tibet. The supreme head of the Kagyu lineage is the Karmapa. The Karmapas have been the supreme heads of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism since the first Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa, in the 12th century. Historically, Dusum Khyenpa was the first Lama recognised to intentionally reincarnate as a particular master. In all of his successive incarnations, the Karmapa has served as the primary source of refuge for all the followers of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. As the central teacher of the Kagyu lineage, he ensures that the teachings are transmitted in their entirety and preserved for future generations. The Karmapa is an extraordinary individual, whose life itself may be seen as a profound teaching. He clearly manifests the potential inherent in all living beings to fully develop the qualities of perfect wisdom, unconditional love and all-pervasive compassion.

It is sometimes called Lamaism, from the name of the Tibetan monks, the lamas [superior ones]. The religion is derived from the Indian Mahayana form of Buddhism, but much of its ritual is based on the esoteric mysticism of Tantra and on the ancient shamanism and sorcery of Bon, a primitive animistic religion of Tibet. Home Tantric (Vajrayana) Buddhism and Buddhism in Tibet The main two divisions of Buddhism are Theravada, the way of the elders, and the more popular Mahayana, the bigger way, the greater raft. There is also a development of the Mahayana group, which is called Vajrayana, to mean the Diamond way. The term "vajra" originated in Hindu mythology and was the diamond hard thunderbolt used as a weapon by the gods. This became an object of Buddhist authority, similar to a royal sceptre. The Vajrayana Buddhists accepted a tantric way of practice, using ritual, religious images, diagrams, chanting, and song. Tantric Buddhists incorporated Hindu chants and initiations into the philosophy which evolved in India about 600-700AD. Tantric Buddhism blends the physical and spiritual world and engages both. The physical has an effect on the spiritual, and the spiritual has a similar effect on the physical. Vajrayanan Buddhism still exists in pockets in many countries, but it reached its full potential, and further developed, in Tibet.
