Vajrayana (Tantric Buddhism)
Vajrayana, or Tantric Buddhism, has been described as the latest phase in the development and evolution of Buddhist thought. For a long time, Western scholars dismissed Vajrayana as the final "degenerate phase" of Buddhist thought. This attitude was due to the fact that these materialistic scholars had only a Christian or a secular way of seeing the world. They could appreciate ordinary Buddhism ( Theravada , etc), seeing the Buddha as the Christ of the East teaching an essentially moral message, or as a sort of spiritual humanist; but when faced with a system of knowledge and practice that embraced all the magical and occult elements that Western rationalism had rejected centuries ago, could only explain it as some sort of degenerate end phase. Fortunately, in more recent times other Westerners have studied Tantric Buddhism first hand, at the feet of actual Tibetan Masters, and so have a more mature appreciation and respect for that noble tradition. Indeed, if anything good has come out of the terrible Chinese invasion and oppression of the Tibetan homeland in the 2nd half of the 20th century, it has been that this has driven Tibetan lamas and teachers to the West, and encouraged them to spread their tradition among sympathetic Westerners. Vajrayana metaphysics is, like

87. The 4 Schools Of Tibetan Buddhism
Summarizing the differences between the four main schools of TibetanBuddhism from the oldest, Nyingma to the newest, Gelugpa.
http://ncnc.essortment.com/tibetanbuddhist_refw.htm
The 4 schools of Tibetan Buddhism
There are four different schools of Tibetan Buddhism; the one similarity they all share is that their systems originated in India. They pay allegiance to Buddha Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha. The schools of Tibetan Buddhism are Mahayana [The Great Wheel], which spreads the belief that all sentient beings must achieve enlightenment, not just a few. The Nyingma School: bodyOffer(27436) The Nyingma School has classified the Buddhist teachings into 9 Vehicles. The first three are: hearer, solitary realizer and bodhisattva. Connected with the outer tantras are: action tantra, performance tantra and yoga tantra. The last three are inner tantra: mahayoga, anuyoga and atiyoga [dzogchen]. Dividing the 9 Vehicles into four categories is done to create the spiritual continuum. Path, fruit and method continuum then follow basis continuum. Further divisions of basis include correct view, which in turn has three aspects 1] entity; 2] nature; and 3] compassion. Path continuum is all about accumulations of merit and wisdom.

Favorite Buddhist and Tibet Related Books at Amazon.com Path to Enlightenment in Tibetan Buddhism :by Geshe Acharya Thubten Loden. Possibly the best and most comprehensive book on the practice of Tibetan Buddhism. I have seen a very thick trade paper book reasonably priced in some U.S. stores. Not available at Amazon Tibet's Great Yogi Milarepa , a Biography from the Tibetan, Edited by W. Y. Evans-Wentz. Probably the greatest story of a chela's tests on the path. The west has Job, the east, Milarepa. I don't think Westerners truly understand the ways on the Guru. Milarepa's life is the Path.

“Meditation is not on the level of the object but on that of the subject - you are the business of your meditation.” “Bodhicitta is very practical, I tell you. It’s like medicine. The self-cherishing thought is like a nail or a sword in your heart; it always feels uncomfortable. With bodhicitta, from the moment you begin to open, you feel incredibly peaceful and you get tremendous pleasure and inexhaustible energy. Forget about enlightenment as soon as you begin to open yourself to others, you gain tremendous pleasure and satisfaction. Working for others is very interesting; it’s an infinite activity. Your life becomes continuously rich and interesting.” "Historically, Shakyamuni Buddha taught the four noble truths. To whose culture do the four noble truths belong? The essence of religion has nothing to do with any one particular country's culture. Compassion, love, reality - to whose culture do they belong? The people of any country, any nation, can implement the three principal aspects of the path, the four noble truths or the eightfold path. There's no contradiction at all." This book is temporarily out of stock; we hope to have it again soon. In the meantime, you can download it in .pdf format, or read it on line.
