Hadden Department of Sociology University of Virginia Lecture: Unification Church Lecture Outline: Reverend Sun Myung Moon and His Movement Unification Beliefs The Future of the Movement Part I The Reverend Moon and His Movement The Unification Church (officially, The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity) was founded in 1954 by Young Myung Moon in Pusan, South Korea. Moon, who changed his name to Sun Myung Moon (meaning "someone who has clarified the Truth, or Shining Sun and Moon) has a vision of Jesus when he was 16 years old. In that visit, he was advised that he had been choosen to fullfill the mission of Jesus. He was a prisoner of war during the Korean War. After the war, he walked from North Korea, where he had been inprisioned, to Pusan in the Southeast where he took up his ministry. There are several good sources that detail the early life of Reverend Moon and his church. For class, we will view a short videotape (12:30 min) produced by the Unification Chruch entitled "The Great Victory of the True Parents." While this video obviously presents Reverend Moon from the Church perspective, it is well done and conveys a basic overview of one of the more successful new faith traditions of the second half of the twentieth centruy. From the Unification Church to the Unification Movement, 1994-1999: Five Years of Dramatic Changes By Massimo Introvigne - An expanded version of this paper will be part of Massimo Introvigne’s book "The Unification Church", to be published in the series "Studies in Contemporary Religion" by Signature Books At the level of the canonical texts, a color-coded version of Wolli Kangron (the "exposition of the Divine Principle"), was published on September 30, 1994, and became the primary standard reference until November 1,1997. At that latter date the Reverend Moon began the tradition of Hoon Dok Hae, including a daily study session in the morning, for which excerpts from his sermons were prepared, and regarded as "complementary expression of the Completed Testament Word," together with the Wolli Kangron. Another relevant change saw the Reverend and Mrs. Moon shift the focus of their activity from North America to South America. In numerous speeches the Reverend Moon referred to North America as the equivalent of the Protestant North Europe and Latin America of the Catholic Southern Europe. The Reverend Moon claims to support the "greater unification" of the Americas before attention can shift towards Europe and Africa. There has been greater missionary activity in Latin America and considerable financial investment in Uruguay. This has alarmed the Catholic church in some countries. There have been campaigns in the Latin American media, for example, to ban foreign Unificationist missionaries.

Although they are often established by members and although church members towards the public often vehemently deny ANY affiliation with the UC, inside the church these organizations are proudly viewed as "Father's projects" ...intended to further the establishment of "God's Kingdom of Heaven on Earth" ...under Mr. Moon's rule as the Messiah and "True Parent of Mankind." I would like to begin my presentation by going back to 1975 and relating a horribly frightening experience. A young missionary who had recently converted to the Unification Church was standing in front of Madison Square Garden giving out pamphlets inviting people to an event. Suddenly he was attacked by a large woman. The missionary could easily have subdued her if he had wanted to fight back, but he refrained. Then, the woman was joined by two men. Together, the three of them attacked the missionary, threw him to the ground and started to kick him while they screamed, "Moonie! Moonie! Moonie!" The young man lay on the ground being kicked. His pamphlets were strewn all over the street. Yet the most horrible thing for this person was not being attacked. Previously, he had been attacked and mugged in one of those bad experiences people sometimes have in New York City. The most horrible experience in this instance was that when he looked for pity, for compassion, for empathy, for support, among the people who were around, he found none. The eyes that he found were eyes of accusation. He deserved to be kicked because he was a "Moonie."

It started with the founder, who suffered a lot in his life. Six times he went to prison. He was tortured and suffered incredibly. I don’t want to go into detail about the different persecutions that you are already aware of, in particular here in the United States in the 1970s and ’80s—the deprogramming and all that. There is an interesting book by Carlton Sherwood entitled Inquisition. It is a masterpiece because he conducted thorough research on the background, the misunderstanding, persecution, and bigotry toward Unificationists, the Unification Church, and the worldwide Unification movement. I will focus on more recent issues. The Schengen treaty was already mentioned, and how it blocks Reverend Moon from entering not only Germany and France but nine other countries in the European Community that are signatories to this treaty. As mentioned earlier, the official reason for not allowing Reverend Moon and his wife to enter these countries is basically the alleged danger to public order. My understanding is that the Schengen Treaty was originally designed to prevent terrorists and the Mafia from entering the countries of the European Community, and now it is applied to Reverend and Mrs. Moon. This is one of the cases we are trying to resolve.

"The cross is the symbol of the defeat of Christianity." The Bible is considered scripture along with Moon’s work "Divine Principles." Sin is genetically based. It is not a moral issue. The thieves on the cross represent political movements. The thief on the right side of Jesus represents democracy. The thief on the left of Jesus is communism. Adam and Eve fell because of sexual sin. Eve had sexual relations with Satan. Jesus is a ‘true person’ though not God in flesh. The Holy Spirit is ‘the True Mother,’ or ‘the Second Eve."
