HIS TORY The history of the Unification Church is inseparable from that of its founder, whose given name was Yong Myung Moon which was changed when he was twenty-five to Sun Myung Moon. Yong Myung Moon was born in Cheong-Ju, a village now situated in North Korea, on January 6, 1920. He was the fifth of eight children born to a couple who converted to the Presbyterian church when young Moon was ten years old. According to official biographies, Jesus Christ appeared to Yong Myung Moon when he was sixteen, revealing that he had chosen him for a special mission. However, at that time Yong Moon did not tell anyone about this revelation which was the first of many he received. In 1938 he left his native village for Seoul, capital of Korea, where he enrolled in a course in technology. Korea in 1941 was still under Japanese occupation, and Moon went to Tokyo to study engineering at Waseda University. In 1943, in the midst of the Second World War, he returned to Korea where he worked in a construction company. He also became involved in a movement fighting for Korean independence against the Japanese. He was discovered, arrested, and imprisoned for four months by the Japanese political police.
At the end of the war, during a period of great religious fervor in Korea, Sun Myung Moon decided to dedicate himself to preaching full time. He married Sun Kil Choi, a fervent Christian, in November 1943.

It did not gain much attention or much of a following outside of Korea until Moon moved to the United States in the early 1970s. The Unification Church is characterized by a specialized interpretation of the Bible and further revelations made by God to Moon, who has proclaimed himself as the successor of Jesus Christ. Members of the church who are single are "matched" by Moon to an appropriate partner and then married along with large numbers of other couples in huge ceremonies.

THE UNIFICATION CHURCH DID MARY HAVE SEX WITH ZACHARIAH! One characteristic of many cults is a form of information control which cult watchers call "outsider" doctrines and "insider" doctrines (e.g. see the book Combatting Cult Mind Control by Steve Hassan, a former Unification Church member, p. 66). DECEIVING CHRISTIAN MINISTERS Several years ago the Unification Church put forth massive concerted efforts towards gaining the sympathy, acceptance and support of Christian Ministers, sending over 7,000 of them on all expense paid trips to Korea. While there the Ministers attended lectures about the teaching of the Unification Church, which the Unification Church said was to seek to promote understanding of what they really teach. Concerning these trips and lectures David Racer, Jr. writes in his book, Not For Sale "The purpose of these trips was to give clergy a close look at Moon's work....The purpose of all this was not to convert anyone to their theology

THE HOLY SPIRIT ASSOCIATION FOR THE UNIFICATION OF WORLD CHRISTIANITY Members of this religious movement are commonly called ‘Moonies’ after the founder, the Rev. Sung Myung Moon. This has emerged as one of the larger cults to be established in the twentieth century. It is said to have over two million members world-wide and to have a business empire worth billions of dollars. It owns The Washington Times which is one of the newspapers that has been used for White House daily news summaries. This movement has had a particularly strong impact upon society because of a number of factors.
    1. A large number of adherents have in the past engaged in street selling of items such as plastic flowers and badges, as well as seeking donations for the various social works in which the movement is said to be involved.
    2. The practice of mass wedding, in which hundreds of couples had their marriage ceremonies conducted simultaneously by the Rev. Moon.

The Logo of The Unification Movement When you are young, traveling on your own and perhaps without much confidence in yourself and your future, a lot of things may happen. It may happen in any part of the world. You may be contacted by young people, who are carrying out a survey. They will ask to hear your views on various issues, and listen in a friendly and sympathetic manner. The interview with these likeable persons of your own age gives you a feeling of being taken seriously. They say they come from a Christian student organization, called CARP. It is an abbreviation of Collegiate Association for Research of Principles, which may sound very normal. Gradually you become curious. You don't know, however, that CARP is a "front" organization, recruiting disciples for the Unification Church. When the CARP representatives invite you to an evening party, including dinner and entertainment, you readily accept. During the evening you receive yet another offer, this time concerning a seminar taking place in a camp nearby. Once again you agree; surely, there can be no harm in joining them to see what is going on. It turns out to be just great! The participants are young people from many different countries, and the days are taken up with sports, singing, games, discussions, and lessons, all spiced with picnics and films. The discussions seem to be interesting and profound and opening up for a new approach to life.

The Unification Church - From Kingdom to Colony
    by Mike Garde
T he Unification Church (commonly known as the Moonies), like Jesus when he was on earth, is having problems bringing in the "Kingdom". According to the Unification Church (UC), Jesus was supposed to introduce the Kingdom, but was failed by his disciples, especially John the Baptist, and so was crucified. As a result he only accomplished "spiritual" salvation. H e did not get married and have sinless children, and did not introduce the Kingdom of God. Now the Rev. Sun Myung Moon has come to complete the Kingdom work Jesus left undone. According to the UC, historical developments such as the con version' of Constantine the Roman Em peror led to the unity of the church and the Empire in preparation for the Messiah s return. This unification of church and state is called GODISM. Ideally, now the world should recognise the Lord of the Second Advent and unite with him through a marriage blessed by the Messiah. The purpose of this marriage is to reverse the effects of the fall and, at this late stage in history, the Rev. Moon' s initiative in marriage is only doing what Jesus failed to do. The Church held a world-wide blessing on August 25th, 1995 of 360,000 couples.

Formed in 1954 by a North Korean electrical engineering graduate called Sun Myung Moon, the Unification Church is now based in America where it owns hotels, newspapers, ballet academies, TV stations and factories. The Church has openly global ambitions - from 1975 to 1985, $746 million was sent to Moon coffers from Japanese followers alone. In 1990 a meeting between Moon and Gorbachov opened up Russia to Moonie missionaries. The Church has been recruiting in China since the late 1980s and backed Le Pen in the last French elections. Edward Heath has been paid to address three Moonie-backed conferences. When the Church's leader, Reverend Moon, was arrested in 1982 for tax fraud, the Moonies spent $5 million on a public relations campaign. Unlike cults who are accused of slyly exploiting the cheap labour of their followers for material profit, the Moonies make no bones about their money-raising agenda.

(Japan) Many Japanese have been shocked by recent revelations that TV personalities YAMAZAKI Hiroko and SAKURADA Junko are members of the Korean-based Unification Church, and that they plan to participate in a mass wedding ceremony in Seoul. The Unification Church, a new religion of Christian origin presided over by Rev. Sun Moon, has been subject to largely negative press coverage in Japan, based on claims that members engage in proselytizing activities under deceitful pretexts. Other members have been accused of engaging in "spiritual merchandising" (reikan shoho), charging illicit prices for sets of cookware or personal seals, based on the claim that the items have been specially purified or blessed, or have other mystical properties. YAMAZAKI Hiroko is well known as an Olympic athlete in rhythmic gymnastics, while SAKAKURA Junko is a popular former vocalist and actress. Due to their large number of fans, the mere revelation of their membership in the Unification Church is sufficient to startle many Japanese, not to mention the fact that they have expressed willingness to participate in a mass-wedding ceremony with partners selected for them by the Church. While the Unification Church has tended to be a closed and exclusive group in the past, its representatives have become more open to interviews with press and TV reporters in recent years. Some observant believe that media reports have produced a positive public relations' effect for the Church, while others regard the new attitude as representing a turning point for the Church's activities.

    Continuing Coverage of Unification Church
(Japan) As noted in the last issue of the Newsletter, the participation of two well-known Japanese television and sports personalities SAKURADA Junko and YAMAZAKI Hiroko led to sensationalistic media coverage for the Korean-based Unification Church' s mass wedding ceremony held in Seoul August 25. A number of Japanese weekly magazines and television "gossip" programs are continuing their coverage, and some are now reporting that Sakurada's marriage is already on the rocks. Based on statements by the sister of Sakurada' s new husband AZUMA Nobuyuki, Azuma has been mentally distraught since the wedding, and has attempted suicide three times. In response to the new coverage, Azuma appeared at a press conference on November 17, denying the rumors and stating that he and Sakurada would begin married life together "sometime early next year." Relatives of Sakurada and representatives of the Unification Church likewise denied the rumors, and blamed the rumors on Azuma's "unstable" sister, who had long been vocerifously opposed to the marriage. Such denials notwithstanding, some Unification Church watchers in Japan continue to feel that something is amiss with the marriage, since Sakurada has remained away from her home and out of the public eye ever since the wedding, in spite of receiving virtually no work in the entertainment industry. Critics note that if all was well in her new married relationship, Sakurada should be more willing to appear in public.

The controversial Unification Church was ordered to pay compensation to its former followers by a Tokyo court Wednesday for forcing them to marry an unknown partner at its "public wedding" ceremonies. Mainichi Shimbun The court ruled that the Unification Church's mass wedding ceremonies were 'serious breaches of freedom of marriage.'
Presiding Judge Hirotsugu Koizumi at the Tokyo District Court ruled that the Christian sect led by South Korean Sun Myung-moon acted illegally. "No follower of the sect was aware that they didn't have to attend these wedding ceremonies if they didn't want to and marry whoever they were partnered with," Koizumi said in ordering the sect pay 9.2 million yen in damages to the three former followers. "These acts were serious breaches of freedom of marriage." A Unification Church spokesperson expressed regret over the decision. "We are upset by the ruling. We plan to appeal after studying the contents of the ruling."
