Savage, who has found his guides in Darwin and Spencer. Beyond its own borders the body has obtained recognition through the public work of such men as Henry Whitney Bellows and Edward Everett Hale, the remarkable influence of James Freeman Clarke and the popular power of Robert Collyer. The number of Unitarian churches in the United States in 1909 was 461, with 541 ministers. The church membership, really nominal, may be estimated at 100,000. The periodicals are The Christian Register, weekly, Boston; Unity, weekly, Chicago; The Unitarian, monthly, New York; Old and New, monthly, Des Moines; Pacific Unitarian, San Francisco. Recognition sought for United Brethren in Christ landmarks Feb. 15, 2000 News media contact: Joretta Purdue Washington NOTE: Russel is spelled correctly in the third to last paragraph. By United Methodist News Service A cluster of sites related to a predecessor of the United Methodist Church will be considered for heritage landmark status when General Conference meets in May. If approved, the cluster of Maryland sites related to the founding and early history of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ would receive a status already held by clusters commemorating historical places significant to early U.S. Methodists. The cluster would mark areas associated with clergymen important in the development of the United Brethren in Christ denomination as its bicentennial is observed this year. The United Brethren in Christ was one of the first churches to originate in the United States. A celebration of its 200th anniversary is scheduled during the United Methodist General Conference in Cleveland, May 2-12. The United Brethren in Christ and the Evangelical Association merged in 1946 to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church. In 1968, that denomination merged with the Methodist Church to create the United Methodist Church. The proposed heritage landmark sites include the Peter Kemp House, near Frederick, where the Church of the United Brethren in Christ was founded in September 1800. An anniversary observance is scheduled for Sept. 25 at the house.

http://www.macomb.com/~ilmcdono/Churches/UB.html
United Brethren in Christ United Brethren in Christ is the title of the church which, in the latter part of the last century, grew out of the religious awakening of Philip William Otterbein and a number of his friends. Philip William Otterbein, the leader of this movement, was a distinguished divine and missionary of the German Reformed church, who was sent by the synod of Holland, in 1752, from Dillenburg, Germany, to America. As a young man he preached with great power and learning. It was not, however, till after his settlement at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, his first charge in America, that Otterbein, after much prayer, realized that God had poured upon him the spirit of grace and power. He began to urge the necessity of a new birth and of experimental godliness. Rev. Martin Boehm, a zealous Mennonite, having himself experienced a similar change of heart, was engaged in a different field in the same work. At a "great meeting" held about 1766, in Isaac Long's barn, in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, both these ministers, with many others, were present. At the close of a very earnest sermon by Mr. Boehm, Mr. Otterbein arose and embraced the preacher, crying, "We are brethren!" These words suggested, a number of years later, the name for the new denomination which finally sprung from this meeting. For the purpose of uniting and establishing the believers in the new life a conference of the ministers was held in 1789, at Baltimore. In 1800, the societies interested in the movement united and formed the "United Brethren in Christ," with Mr. Otterbein and Mr. Boehm as bishops.
