HISTORY
For many years, services were held in what was called Hauns School House. The building, made of logs, had slab benches. All material and work was donated by the community. In 1888, Anderson cox and wife, Mollie, donated 1/2 acre of land for a cemetery and church. Mt. Sinai church was built and dedicated in the same year, under the leadership of the Reverand R. Owens. Again all materials and labor were donated by the congregation and community. the building was 30' x 40'. It was built of yellow pine and poplar. Supt. A.J. Newgent and Rev. Owens organized a Sunday School that had about 20 members. J.A. Yates was Choir Leader. In 1924 a piano was purchased. Ruth Pierce became pianist, a position she held until the end of 1963. In 1931, the church was moved out of the cemetery and more land purchased. Two Sunday School rooms were added. At that time W. H. Turner was pastor with a membership of 70 people.

Both denominations originated early in the 19th cent. and had similarities in organization and polity. The Evangelical Church was begun by the evangelical, pietistic efforts of Jacob Albright , a Lutheran convert to Methodism, who preached among his fellow Pennsylvania Germans. The United Brethren in Christ came into being as a result of the evangelistic preaching of Philip William Otterbein of the German Reformed Church and Martin Boehm Moravian Church are also sometimes called the United Brethren. In earlier years the membership of the Evangelical Church and of the United Brethren in Christ included few who were not German in speech, but later the German-speaking element formed only a small proportion. Extension W of the Alleghenies was rapid. The newly combined church supported publishing houses in the United States and abroad, four theological seminaries, a number of colleges, and foreign missions. It had an episcopal form of government. In doctrine it was Arminian. Particular emphasis was laid on prayer, a life of devotion to Christ, and the responsibility of the individual. Having long maintained a close relationship with the Methodist Church, it merged with it to found (1968) the

The Spirit of Amistad
in The United Methodist Church By Darrell Reeck A New World Outlook Online Article
Imagine that the year is 1839. Imagine a revolt by 53 weakened, enslaved African captives being transshipped around the island of Cuba. Imagine them overpowering their well-armed captors and setting sail for Africa and freedom. If you imagine these things, you'll be recreating history. With Steven Spielberg's film Amistad , released on December 12, 1997, you can do more than imagine; you can experience a modern retelling of an exhilarating liberation story. United Methodists around the world have a vital connection with the Amistad incident. Today, in West Africa, The United Methodist Church in Sierra Leone has more than 85,000 members. This modern Sierra Leone Annual Conference has important historical links with the Amistad revolt that took place 158 years ago. United Brethren in Christ Chapel in Sierra Leone

Amistad: The Story
In 1839, the captives below decks wanted only to return to their homes in what is now Sierra Leone. After successfully overpowering the crew, they set sail for Africa. Inadvertently, however, they drifted north to Long Island Sound, where they were arrested by the US Coast Guard. There the foreign slaveholders caught up with them and demanded that the United States return the slaves to a plantation in Cuba. Almost immediately, American abolitionists intervened on behalf of the captives. These activists in the name of Christ provided housing and education and helped the captives gain widespread publicity while awaiting trial. They also arranged a defense when the government appealed the case before the United States Supreme Court. There, none other than former President John Quincy Adams argued the captives' case, pleading for their acquittal and freedom. Subsequently, the Supreme Court freed the Amistad captives in 1841.

Mueller, representing The Evangelical United Brethren Church, and Bishop Lloyd C. Wicke of The Methodist Church joined hands at the constituting General Conference in Dallas, Texas. With the words, "Lord of the Church, we are united in Thee, in Thy Church and now in The United Methodist Church," the new denomination was given birth by two churches that had distinguished histories and influential ministries in various parts of the world. Theological traditions steeped in the Protestant Reformation and Wesleyanism, similar ecclesiastical structures, and relationships that dated back almost two hundred years facilitated the union. In the Evangelical United Brethren heritage, for example, Philip William Otterbein, the principal founder of the United Brethren in Christ, assisted in the ordination of Francis Asbury to the superintendency of American Methodist work. Jacob Albright, through whose religious experience and leadership the Evangelical Association was begun, was nurtured in a Methodist class meeting following his conversion.

which formed (1830) the Remonstrant Synod, comprising three presbyteries. In 1910 the Antrim Presbytery, Remonstrant Synod and Synod of Munster were united as the General Synod of the non-subscribing Presbyterian Church of Ireland. They have 38 congregations and some mission stations. Till 1889 they maintained two theological chairs in Belfast, where John Scott Porter (1801—1880) was a pioneer in biblical criticism; they now send their students to England for their theological education, though in certain respects their views and practices are more conservative than those of their English brethren. Irish Unitarian periodical literature began in 1832 with the Bible Christian, followed by the Irish Unitarian Magazine, the Christian Unitarian, the Disciple and now the Non-subscribing Presbyterian. See generally R. Wallace’s Antitrinitarian Biog. (1850); G. BonetMaury’s Early Sources of Eng. Unit. Christianity, trans. E. P. Hall (1884); A. Gordon’s Heads of Eng. Unit. Hist. (1895). (A. Go.*) United Stales.—Unitarianism in the United States followed essentially the same development as in England, and passed through the stages of Arminianism, Arianism, anti-tritheism, to rationalism and a modernism based on a large-minded acceptance of the results of the comparative study of all religions. In the early 18th century Arminianism presented itself in New England, and sporadically elsewhere; this tendency was largely accelerated by the reaction. from the excesses of the “ Great Awakening” under Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield. Before the War of Independence Arianism showed itself in individual instances, and French influences were widespread in the direction of deism, though they were not organized into any definite utterance by religious bodies.
