The Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church was formed in 1883 by a merger of the Evangelical United Mennonite Church and a Brethren in Christ group known as the Swankites. The Evangelical Mennonites in turn had been formed in 1879 by a merger of the Evangelical Mennonites of Pennsylvania and the United Mennonites of Ontario. May 5, 2000 GC-017 Daily wrap-up: Delegates honor predecessor churches CLEVELAND (UMNS) Heritage and contemporary problems shared space on the May 4 docket of the United Methodist General Conference in Cleveland. The two churches joined in l946 to create the Evangelical United Brethren Church. That body, in turn, merged with the Methodist Church in l968. Text and pictures were used to highlight mileposts of the two churches, which found their field of ministry in the thousands of German-speaking peoples who fled to America from Europe. Their work paralleled Methodist ministry with English-speaking residents of the new nation. Included in the memories were the "great meeting" in Isaac Long’s barn on the outskirts of Lancaster, Pa., in 1767, where Phillip William Otterbein and Martin Boehm met; the formation of the United Brethren in Christ in September 1800 on a farm near Frederick, Md.; the organization at about the same time of the Evangelical Association a few miles west of Lancaster; and the uniting of the two bodies in l946 in Johnstown, Pa., to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church (EUB). Boehm, a Mennonite, and Otterbein, a German Reformed pastor, were elected bishops at the United Brethren in Christ organizational meeting in Maryland. Jacob Albright, organizer of the Evangelical Association had been converted under Methodist teaching.

United Brethren Founding Sites Cluster Frederick and Washington Counties, MD Heritage Landmark of The United Methodist Church Sketch of Geeting Meeting House, Keedysville, MD The cluster includes the United Brethren founding place at the Peter Kemp house, homes and graves of Bishops Newcomer and Russell; the Geeting house and Geeting Meetinghouse/Mt. Hebron site continuing as Salem UMC, Keedysville; Trinity United Church of Christ tower and Centennial UMC both in Frederick. The Geeting Meetinghouse (1774) was succeeded by Mt. Hebron (1845-80) then by Salem at Keddysville. The conference-owned site has hosted annual Whitsuntide meetings since 1770. George Adam Geeting (1741-1812) served from 1774-1812, was ordained by Otterbein in 1783 and served as Conference secretary from 1800-1812. His attractively restored house was a Civil War Hospital and now is a Washington County historical site. At the Peter Kemp House on September 25, 1800, the Church of the United Brethren in Christ was organized. In 1950, the Evangelical United Brethren erected a commemorative marker on the lawn. Bishop Christian Newcomer (1749-1830), preached from 1777, acted as bishop from 1813-30 and consequently extended the church westward. He rests at Beaver Creek cemetery near the Washington County historical site at his former home.
