THE PRESENT
A DOWNTOWN CHURCH St. Matthew's finds itself in a new role and place in the society around it. In the present age it's physical community and local demographic has changed quite drastically from the hey day's. St. Matthew's is now surrounded by a fast moving business district and even faster moving populous. St. Matthew's is the classic example of a "downtown" urban church. In 1999 the congregation will have served this area for 250 years. St. Matthew's is actively seeking new ways to honour and open a tradition of faith deeply rooted in this community. The congregation has taken it upon themselves to offer a new relevance for their facilities and spirituality. The oldest United Church of Canada in the country may well be moving in the newest direction in the country with an exciting process of celebration and renewal. CELEBRATION AND RENEWAL The membership, and ministry leadership, of the congregation is reaching out to the surrounding community to share, and hear, the Good News of Christ through traditional and contemporary means. Through worship and social outreach a deep care for each individuals spiritual growth is being expressed. The accomplishments and faith of 250 years are being celebrated while active program of renewal has been initiated to begin to look forward to the next 250 years.

If you are new to the United Church of Canada, the following may give you some idea as to the history and make-up of this denomination. Formed in 1925 as a 'union' of Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational churches, out of a desire for unity and economy, The United Church of Canada is a community of 713,000 members in 3,960 congregations in 94 Presbyteries in 13 regional Conferences. The Church is led by an elected Moderator (Marion Pardy) who presides for three years over a General Council Executive of about 40 members. This Council includes clergy and lay members. The National Staff is divided into six Divisions:
  • Mission In Canada
  • World Outreach
  • Ministry, Personnel and Education
  • Communication
  • Finance
  • Ethnic Ministries Council
Decisions are made by committees, with the most critical decisions being made by the General Council, meeting every three years, a group of 400 clergy and lay elected delegates. Local decisions are made by local congregations, and each congregation is represented at Waterloo Presbytery (monthly) and the Hamilton Conference (annually).

GENERAL 1.1 The name of the Church formed by the union of the Presbyterian, Methodist, and Congregational Churches in Canada, shall be "The United Church of Canada." 1.2 It shall be the policy of the United Church to foster the spirit of unity in the hope that this sentiment of unity may in due time, so far as Canada is concerned, take shape in a Church which may fittingly be described as national. DOCTRINE 2.1 Article I. Of God. We believe in the one only living and true God, a Spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable, in His being and perfections; the Lord Almighty, who is love, most just in all His ways, most glorious in holiness, unsearchable in wisdom, plenteous in mercy, full of compassion, and abundant in goodness and truth. We worship Him in the unity of the Godhead and the mystery of the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, three persons of the same substance, equal in power and glory. 2.2 Article II. Of Revelation.

The landmarks of our faith.
We build upon the foundation laid by the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone. We affirm our belief in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the primary source and ultimate standard of Christian faith and life. We acknowledge the teaching of the great creeds of the ancient Church. We further maintain our allegiance to the following evangelical doctrines of the Reformation: SOLI DEO HONOR ET GLORIA-SOLUS CHRISTUS-SOLA SCRIPTURA-SOLA GRATIA-SOLA FIDE.

http://www.affirmunited.ca/UCacstud.htm
How to Become an Affirming Congregation or Ministry
The Affirming Congregation Program is an opportunity, a challenge, a hand reaching out. It is for local congregations and other ministires who are ready to begin dialogue about the concerns of bisexuals, lesbians and gay men in the United Church of Canada. If your congregation, college, chaplaincy, or other ministry is committed to justice, is willing to discuss difficult issues, or has a group of people who are willing to foster this discussion, then you are ready to begin the process of becoming an Affirming faith community. Affirming Congregations and Ministries are ones which
welcome bisexuals, lesbians and gay men and their families into all aspects of the church or community life,
promote reconciliation for lesbian, bisexual, and gay people in the church and in society, and
minister to and with gay men, lesbians and bisexuals.
To be in ministry to and with bisexuals, lesbians and gay men involves an attitude of sensitivity and openness to the gifts and graces of each person in the body of Christ. It requires an appreciation that teaching and learning are a two-way process of mutual listening and understanding. This program is envisioned as a means of support and education for justice-seeking faith communities. The United Church of Canada has been studying the issues surrounding human sexuality and sexual orientation since 1972.In the 1988 statement entitled Membership, Ministry, and Human Sexuality, the United Church of Canada, through its General Council, declared:

OUR UPCOMING SUNDAY BULLETIN AND OUR LAST SEVEN SITE UPDATES AND ADDITIONS Greetings in the name of Christ Jesus. The Upcoming Sunday is The Fourth Sunday In Lent. In the United Kingdom it is observed as Mothering Sunday and in certain places all over the world it is also know as Holy Humour Sunday . We have several resources for you to look at.
The Medicine of Eternity
is a newly revised Holy Humour Sunday liturgy and sermon that uses the texts for the Upcoming Sunday and addresses them in both the children's time and the homily - but lightly so. Various tales are told to seed the service with humour and to help the congregation to present its own materials. A Simnel Cake (a feature of Mothering Sunday) is a part of the children's time. A recipe for it can be found from the Mothering Sunday link listed above.
For those taking a more serious look at this Sunday's texts, our sermon

The Crest of the united church of canada was designed to show the componentsof the original denominations that formed the church at union in 1925.

The UCC Crest
The image of the crest is at the bottom of the article. The Crest of the United Church of Canada was designed to show the components of the original denominations that formed the church at union in 1925. Dr. Victor T. Mooney was the minister of our Port Elgin church prior to union when it was known as the Port Elgin Presbyterian Church. Dr. Mooney, who later went on to become the treasurer of the United Church of Canada, designed the United Church crest. Dr. and Mrs. Mooney came back to summer in Port Elgin for more than 50 years. They are both gone now but their memory lives on. He explains in his own words how he came to design the crest. "When I was appointed treasurer of the United Church of Canada, I discovered that the church had no seal to seal the documents of the church. Shortly after the 1925 union, the executive had ordered that a seal be designed for the United Church, and a committee was appointed to look into it and make recommendation. However, no report was ever made to the executive. The committee had appointed an expert in seals for documents, several designs were made, but they had not appealed to the committee, so they had not presented them. They did, however, decide that they should work into it symbols that would represent the various denominations coming into union. Because I was always doodling in the meetings, the then moderator, Dr. Slater said, "Let's appoint Mooney the chairman of a new committee; he's always doodling. He ought to be able to work out a design".
