Court rules United Church of Canada
deviates from doctrinal standards

Congregation allowed to leave with property
By Paula R. Kincaid
The Presbyterian Layman

Monday, November 23, 1998 A recent Bermuda court decision could open the doors for hundreds of conservative United Church congregations in Canada to quit the denomination and take their buildings with them.
The Supreme Court of Bermuda has ruled that a small Methodist church can leave the United Church of Canada (UCC) and take its $2 million property since the "current doctrinal standards of the UCC of Canada [are] at variance with the doctrines of the 25 Articles of Faith of John Wesley."
The case pitted Grace Methodist Church in Hamilton, a small, black congregation, against the Synod of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Bermuda, which is governed by the Maritime Conference of the UCC. The UCC is a merger of several mainline denominations, including Presbyterians, and is widely regarded as a prototype of what the Consultation of Church Union (COCU) in the United States proposes to accomplish.
The history
A 1992 UCC decision to allow the ordination of homosexuals drew objections from four largely black congregations of the synod, including Grace Methodist. The decision prompted a 1993 vote by the Bermuda synod, in which a majority of the synod voted to stay in the UCC. Congregations with predominantly black membership voted strongly in favor of leaving the UCC while the larger, racially mixed or predominantly white congregations voted to stay. At Grace Methodist, 83 percent of the congregation voted to leave the synod.

90. United Church Of Canada's Ethics

COMMENTS ON SUBMISSION BY THE UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA (124) TO THE PANEL
by J.A.L. Robertson
1996 April 26
[Note that P. Timmerman, author of submission 043, acted as consultant for this submission.] At first I welcomed this submission as an opportunity to understand why critics of nuclear energy considered it unethical. However, I soon found so many distortions and omissions of relevant facts that I became highly critical of the critics. Furthermore, it is profoundly offensive in its numerous unsubstantiated allegations against nuclear energy and those who are responsible for it. Either the bias was deliberate or it was unconscious, out of ignorance. If the former, the authors were unethical by their own standards ("It is unethical to arrive at any conclusion based upon the exclusion of the necessary evidence" p.3-9, para.3); if the latter they were not competent to draw conclusions affecting the health, economy and environment of Canadians.
Section 1
"... the health, not only of humans but of the planet itself and everything that subsists in it, is involved." (p.1-1, para.1) is hyperbole approaching scare-mongering. This (para.2)

Background
In 1980, a new office building was opened for the Newfoundland and Labrador Conference of the United Church of Canada. This building is the site of the Conference Archives. Records were moved from the old vaults at Prince of Wales College (formerly the Methodist College) and relocated to the current site. This location contains an environmentally controlled vault for storage and a research reading room. Archival Holdings The mandate of the Conference Archives is to collect, preserve, and make available to researchers materials pertaining to the United Church of Canada in Newfoundland and Labrador and its antecedent congregations. Holdings include education records, private papers, and the Wesleyana Collection donated by the late former Premier Joseph R. Smallwood. Over 100 Pastoral Charges comprise the Newfoundland and Labrador Conference and efforts are being made to consolidate their records in the Archives. These vital records date from 1794.
