Recommended Book Selections for the Month... Affirmations Of A Dissenter Like many churchgoers, C. Joseph Sprague finds himself in a quandary: he loves the church but often finds himself at odds with its principles and/or practices. What makes his situation unique is that in addition to his role as worshiper, he is a bishop who is charged with the responsibility of leadership. In Affirmations of a Dissenter, Sprague gives readers a composite of affirmation and dissent, of faith and protest. He writes about his trust in and commitment to Gods hospitable, unconditional love for all humankind as well as about his discomfort with discernible public trends in religious institutions, particularly United Methodism. The brief chapters of this book cover a variety of topics: biblical literalism; the power of biblical witness; biblical authority as related to homosexuality, divorce, violence, and women; the nature and person of Jesus; hope in the church; leadership; and racism.

St. Luke United Methodist Church
WELCOME TO THE ST. LUKE WEB SITE!
St. Luke provides excellent programming for children and youth as well as superb worship and service opportunities for adults. The St. Luke congregation enjoys a vital connection with the larger United Methodist Church which enables it to be a part of critical mission and ministry around the world. St. Luke has a distinct tradition of exploring the bible, theological concepts, and Christian discipleship in a manner that fully engages contemporary insights and scholarship. St. Luke is a place where any "God question" or biblical query is wholeheartedly welcomed for exploration. St. Luke staff and membership strive to have open minds, warm hearts, and lives that make a positive impact on the world. St. Luke United Methodist Church is unique in its theology, facility development, and mission philosophy. Theology
The preaching and teaching at St. Luke aims at combining the best in critical biblical scholarship and contemporary knowledge from all disciplines of study. We attempt to simultaneously stimulate the heart and mind in worship and other congregational gatherings. Facility Development
St. Luke built a gymnasium and child development center initially. This enabled the church to serve the social, family, and spiritual needs of the community from its beginning. Over the years the facility has added space for the worship, program, and administrative needs of the congregation and its outreach to the community.

A Every church challenged and equipped to make disciples of Jesus Christ by taking risks and changing lives. Provide effective leadership - Become servants like Jesus - Help children and youth to be disciples - Establish new communities of faith The following is a letter to all United Methodist Churches from the Executive Committee of the Council of Bishops. They ask that you share this letter with your congregation this weekend: Dear United Methodist Brothers and Sisters, In this season of Lent, with the world caught in the grip of war, we United Methodists remember Jesus' words, "My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations." I call on all our churches in every place to be such a welcoming house for all people. In the midst of our feelings of insecurity and lack of control, Jesus' words invite us to gather in prayer.
  • Let us be in prayer for all the leaders of the nations who are involved and affected in this present crisis.
  • Let us pray for all the military personnel and for their families and friends who wait, worry, and wonder.

"Laity Election Guide"
for Annual Conference
by Tom Talbert
Guide (MS Word) Guide (PDF) NTC goals for racial inclusiveness reviewed, recommendations set From left: Rev. Janet Bell Odom, New Jerusalem Fellowship, Lewisville; Rev. Bill Bryan, Perkins School of Theology, SMU; Rev. Karen Chraska, Trietsch Memorial UMC, Flower Mound, Ruth Robinson, Hamilton Park, UMC, and Connie Trevino, Highland Park UMC, participated in developing recommendations for the Commission on Religion and Race Review at Lovers Lane UMC, Dallas, Feb. 13-15. Over 100 NTC lay and clergy were asked to measure how far we have come "from whence we have started from?" and the steps needed to arrive at racial inclusiveness at a review held Feb. 13-15 at Hamilton Park and Lovers Lane UMCs in Dallas.
The evaluation was to assess the progress of the annual conference in the elimination of racism, led by Rev. Yolanda Pupo-Ortiz, associate general secretary from UM General Commission on Religion and Race (GCRR), Washington, D.C., and assisted by Samuel Rodriguez, Fort Worth; Minnie Romo, San Antonio; and Roslyn K. Sykes, St. Louis.

A Message from the Senior Pastor
We're glad that you have selected to visit with our church. The First United Methodist Church of LaGrange has a rich history of service to Christ. Established in 1828, our congregation has met continuously on this site since that time. Though we honor a historic past it is the future that claims our attention.
As a congregation of some 1,600 members, we offer a myriad of ministries designed to strengthen the spiritual life of everyone who visits here. We offer an abundance of programs from a week day preschool program, mid-week communion, to Bible Study and Sunday School. However, the ministry of First Methodist Church extends far beyond ourselves. Our church sponsors Soup Kitchen for people in need and sponsors mission projects locally and abroad. In addition, we actively support Habitat for Humanity and a number of other ministries that remind us that "whatever you do for one of the least of these, you do for me." Matthew 25:40. We believe that one of the best ways to gain inward spiritual growth is to outwardly share the Good News of Christ. I want to encourage you to browse our web site and find out more about First United Methodist Church. Better yet, come and visit us. We offer three services of
