Issues in the Uniting Church in Australia The unity of the Uniting Church, which was established in 1977, has been tested by controversy in recent years, especially since 1997 in regard to the sexuality report. My contribution to debates on the ordained ministry and constitutional questions has centred on the role of the Basis of Union as the foundation for a commitment to catholicity. The Commitment to Catholicity in the Basis of Union One of the issues which has been a subject of national debate in the Uniting Church in recent years is the role and status of the Basis of Union under which the Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches agreed to unite in 1977. Controversy arose especially in the light of Constitutional changes made at the 1991 Assembly concerning ministry and ordination which many saw to be inconsistent with the Basis and a departure from the commitment to remain within the holy catholic church. Some errors were corrected at the 1994 Assembly and a reference to the Basis was incorporated into the Constitution at the Assembly in 1997, but the role of the Basis in the life of the Church continues to be a matter of debate. The linked document refers to papers which are some of the contributions I have made in these discussions, with a 2001 addition on the kind of diversity that is compatible with the Basis of Union in the light of the Constitutional changes. Homosexuality and Ministry in the Uniting Church The linked document is an introduction to a number of papers I have written over the past ten years which deal with this tragic controversy. I might wish now that I had never had anything to do with it, but the reality is that I took a strong position because I believed that the Church was being manipulated and led in the wrong direction not so much because of a false view of sexuality, though there has been such a view, but more because of a mistaken allegiance to a secular ideology of progress. We are dealing with a culture conflict between Christianity and competing beliefs which is pervasive in Western societies and within the churches. The questions of truth which we confront in this conflict are not to be confused with the related pastoral questions which pose difficulties in terms of discipline, love, acceptance, forgiveness and tolerance.

Clearly it also formed part of the divine action in history according to Luke. Why not write about history right up to his own day, which many see as the 9 th Identity Crisis? Continuity with Israel The change of gear from Luke 1:1-4 to Luke 1:5, from high Hellenistic rhetoric to biblical Greek narrative style, demonstrates how important biblical tradition is for Luke. In stories shot through with allusions to the great heroes of old, especially the great women of faith, Luke opens his account with scenes of devout Jewish piety. Elizabeth and Zechariah, Mary and Joseph, Anne and Simeon echo the cries of Israel for liberation. Their lives are focused on the holy temple. They are scrupulously observant of biblical law, Torah. In this womb of piety Jesus is conceived. These people are true Israel. Not just their behaviour, but also divine behaviour, angels and visions and visitations, confirms the sacredness of these scenes. We remember their ancestors with respect and commit ourselves to work for reconciliation and justice for indigenous people. The Wurundjeri people - original owners and custodians of the land on which the Uniting Church's Synod offices stand in central Melbourne - were officially recognised as just that at a ceremony on December 13th, 2000. Unveiling a plaque at the front of the 130 Little Collins Street site, Moderator Rev Alistair Macrae said it was of great importance to acknowledge the Wurundjeri as the original inhabitants and custodians of the land. He said the plaque was the latest in a series of events and statements by the church on the issue of prior aboriginal ownership. Many Uniting Church congregations across Victoria had undertaken similar acts of recognition "which is part of a whole process of truth-telling and reconciliation," he said. Wurundjeri elder, Ms Joy Murphy, formally welcomed the people of the church to the land and in traditional custom lead a smoking ceremony of burning gum leaves. About 50 church and synod staff were invited to walk through the smoke as a sign of cleansing and purification.
