an inclusive church
President John Mavor told a press conference that the Assembly had endorsed the Uniting Church as an inclusive church, and that gay and lesbian people were very welcome.
July 1997 Perth "We must try to stand in the shoes of those who have lost touch with the church. We sometimes hide the word of grace," "We must learn also to stand in the shoes of those who are different from us or who think differently from us." "We should try to stand in the shoes of those who are alienated by injustice. Too often we are blinded by our comfort. But when we are confronted by Jesus, we must become signs of grace for God's love and justice for others." Rev. Pamela A Kerr, Moderator of the Uniting Church in Victoria. "People can disagree about issues but still come away respecting each other," said Rev Christine Bayliss-Kelly. It's a feature of the sexuality task group she has noticed, too. "Each time we've met with three or four [task group members], they've really listened to each other. They're very good at respecting each other's views." As for the issue itself, she points to both the areas where people agree and to what Jesus said about homosexuality: "His silence is deafening to me. That means I can live with the uncertainty, trusting that somehow God has it in hand." "Central to Jesus' teaching ministry was the Reign of God.

Mavor on Immigration Multiculturalism and immigration are key characteristics of Australia’s identity and to severely limit them would be to cut out part of the heart and soul of this country, according to the President of the Uniting Church in Australia. The Rev. John Mavor, who has also played a leading role in the international aid agency Austcare for the past 21 years, said One Nation’s Immigration Policy, revealed this week, was totally unrealistic. It was inconsistent with this country’s committment to a caring society for all Australians and our international human rights obligations. “How can Australia abandon support for multiculturalism when it is a multicultural country?” John said. “How can you even speak the name of this country without recognising it as a nation of immigrants?” John said the Uniting Church had affirmed and reaffirmed itself as a church which seeks to be multicultural because it recognised and valued the great enrichment it by virtue of migrant-ethnic members. “And indeed the whole world recognises the great contribution the people of many nations have made to this country.

We are called to continue to strive for a society of compassion, justice and good neighbourliness, so that Australia may take its place as a responsible participant in the international community. The Christian faith speaks of a God who cares especially for the poor and dispossessed, and who holds before us the constant possibility of a renewed community. It calls us not to fear but to hope, not to suspicion but to trust, not to division but to a fresh discovery of all people as our brothers and sisters in the human family. In the present atmosphere, we who claim to be Christians have a special responsibility to ensure our attitudes and involvements as citizens are informed by the faith we profess. all baptised Christians belong in Christ's church and are welcomed at his table, regardless of their sexual orientation
