Deacons in the Uniting Church in Australia return to the very front page [home] the badge of deacons in the Uniting Church in Australia When the Uniting Church in Australia (UCA) formed in 1977, it acknowledged in its foundational document, the Basis of Union , that, "at the time of union many seek a renewal of the diaconate in which men and women offer their time and talents in the service of humankind in the face of changing needs." In 1992 the first deacons were ordained. Five years later, many people, even in the UCA, have never heard of us. We hope these pages will be a part of the solution to this problem, as well as providing resources to help deacons themselves be encouraged, and productive, in their ministries. Deacons are ministers who are ordained to work primarily in the non church community, dealing with issues of social justice, empowering the marginalised to regain a measure of power in the community. The first deacons were ordained in the UCA in 1992. A considerable number were previously deaconesses. The remainder either candidated as deacons, or transferred from being ministers of the Word. To find out more about deacons, you can either look at

Our Statement in Faith The Uniting Church in Australia Our History History of the Monk Organ The Uniting Church in Australia
The Uniting Church was formed in 1977 when the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches within Australia came together to form a new Australian church. This brought into union a rich heritage of faith. It also created a way to express individual traditions within an atmosphere of diversity, where difference becomes acceptable:
With harmony and grace, we are a diverse people who have a vision. With harmony and grace, ours is a call to love God, follow Christ and respond to the Holy Spirit. In harmony, we become the people of God – strong, flexible, confident, faithful, called. By the grace of God we receive the gifts of hope, love, forgiveness, challenge, empowerment and faith. [from the Basis of Union].
This statement remains a strength within the Church and has led the Church towards its commitment to being an inclusive church. The work of the National Assembly agencies and working groups includes issues of justice and social responsibility and the provision of community services.
The statements of the Church are aspirations towards which we are constantly seeking to move. As human beings we do not always get it right but through the constant and sure guidance of God through the Holy Spirit we seek to become such people. We speak of ourselves as a ‘pilgrim people’ actively seeking and actively moving towards God’s kingdom.
