What is a 'Partner Church'?

The Uniting Church in Australia sees itself as part of the world-wide body of Christ, as represented by Christian churches everywhere. It also has some particularly close relationships with a number of churches in Asia , the Pacific and Southern Africa . These close relationships are called 'partnerships', and the churches are referred to as the UCA's 'Partner Churches'.

Uniting Church policy on the eligibility of homosexual persons for membershipof the church was clarified by the Assembly Standing Committee in 1987.

Current policy on homosexuality
Gregor Henderson, Assembly General Secretary, 15 July 1997 1. Membership of the church Uniting Church policy on the eligibility of homosexual persons for membership of the church was clarified by the Assembly Standing Committee in 1987. Standing Committee minute 87.46 includes the declaration that " All baptised Christians belong in Christ's church and are to be welcomed at his table, regardless of their sexual orientation ". This means that homosexual persons are welcome in the membership of the Uniting Church, subject only to the normal decision-making processes of councils of elders. There is no bar to their eligibility for church membership and for elected or appointed positions within the life of the congregation.
2. The ordained ministry Uniting Church policy on the question of homosexuality and ordained ministry is stated in three resolutions of the Assembly Standing Committee, in 1982, 1987 and 1994. These resolutions have not been overturned or amended by any Assembly. They are reproduced in full in Appendix 2 of the report Uniting Sexuality and Faith (Standing Committee minutes 82.12, 87.46 and 94.78.3). The current policy can be summarised as follows.

The board of trustees of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) passed a resolution that condemns attempts to change homosexuals to heterosexuals . Last year the American Psychological Association passed a similar resolution Virtually Normal how should a predominantly heterosexual society should treat those citizens who love members of their own sex? "We recognise that among the people whose orientation is homosexual and who do not believe they are called to celibacy there are members of the church whose Christian character and pastoral gifts we respect." Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne, Keith Rayner has told Synod it is time for a re-examination of the church’s attitudes to homosexuality. The church must deal with the concrete existence of gays and lesbians in their midst
Do you agree that same sex couples should be given legal rights equal to those of heterosexual couples?
Yes, I do!
No, not yet! In a recent online survey by a major news group the results were; Yes 73% No 27% A Space for Resistance - a Community Response to hate and homophobia . On Monday evening 26th October 1998 at 7.30pm in Paddington concerned members of the community will gather across the divides of ideology and religion to express a common hope to build community and sustain understanding in the face of ongoing hatred and homophobia . Initiated in response to the death of Matthew Shepard in the US this event is also a response to the often unacknowledged fear that inhabits local communties in the face of ongoing violence towards gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. This will be an opportunity to create a

7. The Uniting Church in Australia
Session Outline:
Reviewing the week
Church Union
Session Aims:
Check List:

In previous sessions reference has been made, wherever appropriate, to the Basis of Union and Regulations of the Uniting Church in Australia. This week focuses on the heritage, history and organisation of the Uniting Church in Australia.
The Uniting Church does have roots. In the life of the Church it is already becoming rare to hear the question, "What were you before Church Union?" For each new generation of members it will be less and less significant. Yet it is important to know that the UCA itself does have roots. We face the very real danger of being carried around by every shifting wind of theological and ecumenical opinion. The commitment to reach out in fellowship to other Christian Churches is commendable in itself. But it has been easier to issue consensus statements on Baptism or Holy Communion with the Catholic, Anglican or Lutheran Churches - who know what they believe - than to face the divergent opinions on these same issues within our own Church. The roots of our Church are not determinant for all time of all that we think and do, but they do express the emphasis and identity with which God has called us into being.
At some point in today's session mention should be made of the fact that not all the members of the uniting churches in fact entered Church Union. The three Churches adopted different voting procedures appropriate to their traditions.

She recognizes that she is related to other Churches in ways which give expression, however partially, to that unity in faith and mission. She believes that Christians in Australia are called to bear witness to a unity of faith and life in Christ which transcends cultural and economic, national and racial boundaries, and to this end she commits herself to seek special relationships with Churches in Asia and the Pacific. She declares her desire to enter more deeply into the faith and mission of the Church in Australia, by working together and seeking union with other Churches.

Covenanting is an agency of the National Assembly with Peter Lewis its current National Director. Covenanting produces a variety of resources for congregations including a 'template' that can be used by congregations to make a commitment to their local Indigenous community and Congress. True reconciliation can only be based on walking alongside Indigenous people as they seek reconnection - with the land, with their economic foundation, with their culture and within families.
