http://www.gentleshepherdmcc.com/html/wwa/ufmcc/ufmccIntro.htm
Gentle Shepherd MCC of Tallahassee is part of a denomination called the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC) . We are a protestant denomination operating in the mainstream of Christianity with a primary outreach to all of God's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered children. What follows is a little more information about UFMCC. What Is MCC?
MCC, also referred to as UFMCC, or the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches is a Christian denomination with a primary, affirming ministry to gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered persons and their friends and families. Founded in 1968, UFMCC today is composed of more than 42,000 members in 300 congregations in 16 countries around the world.
Rev. Elder Troy D. Perry
Founder and Moderator
of UFMCC
All people gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and heterosexual are invited to new life through the liberating gospel of Jesus Christ in the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. UFMCC puts its faith into action by creating a global community of healing and reconciliation, and by confronting the injustices of homophobia, sexism, racism and poverty through Christian social action. The Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC) plays a vital role in addressing the spiritual needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered community around the world. For those of us who were raised in a religious atmosphere, homosexuality was usually associated with shame and guilt. As a result, many of us were cut off from the spiritual dimension of our lives. Metropolitan Community Churches provide an opportunity to explore a spiritual experience that affirms who we are.

More than 20 UFMCC churches have been bombed, or set on fire by arsonists. This is an unusually high number for a denomination of 300 churches. US President Bill Clinton announced the conference in 1977 June during an address to the nation. He called for all Americans to "use the full talents of all of our people, regardless of race or religious faith, national origin or sexual orientation, gender or disability." He has organized a White House Conference on Hate Crimes for 1997-NOV-10. The conference will explore both federal and community-based remedies for addressing hate crimes. The Rev. Troy D. Perry, founder of the UFMCC, will participate in the conference. In a letter to President Clinton, Perry noted that:

Against UFMCC Congregation NEW YORK, June 2, 1998 The Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches (NCC), wrote a May 29 letter to the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches condemning the bombing threat to a Metropolitan Community Church congregation in Bournemouth, England. "Our experience with the burning of Black churches in the United States has been an object lesson to us in the ways thoughts and words of hatred and bigotry are quickly transmitted into deeds of destruction," Dr. Campbell wrote. "My deepest sorrow comes from the fact that such threats and deeds are carried out in the false belief that they are motivated by Christian faith. The Gospel of our Lord without exception proclaims love of neighbor and the dignity of all persons." The letter was sent to the Rev. Troy D. Perry, founder and moderator of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC), headquartered in West Hollywood, Calif. In a press release issued from the UFMCC, Rev. Perry said, "These threats are still another reminder of the important work we have yet to accomplish on behalf of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered persons. This marks the second bomb threat against UFMCC congregations in the past two months. Over the past 30 years, more than 20 of our churches have been victimized by arson or firebombing."

The Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC) was founded by the Rev. Elder Troy Perry with 12 people in his living room in Los Angeles on October 6, 1968. In the brief span of 30 years since that date, the membership of UFMCC has grow, despite opposition, adversity, and persecution, to over 44,000 people in approximately 300 congregations. The Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC), which is also referred to as MCC, is a Christian denomination with a primary, affirming ministry to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered persons, their friends and families, and open-minded straight folk. Today, there are MCC churches around the world, including the following local congregations in: Australia Canada Denmark France ... New Zealand ; the Philippines Puerto Rico Scotland South Africa ; and the UK. Go to www.mccchurch.com for more information. We are a "liberal" Christian Church. By that we mean that we willingly embrace such traditionally "liberal" values as helping and advocating for the poor, valuing the environment, recognizing as sinful such oppressive attitudes as sexism, ageism, racism, and homophobia. We believe that caring for those who are hurting is the chief expression of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Caring for others is the soul of who we are. It keeps us from being consumed with ourselves. It is the antidote for the toxic effects of materialism that is consuming our society.

On this page you'll find an individual link to each state in North America that will provide you with all the known gay-welcoming congregations in that state. Congregations listed are either members of the official gay-affirming movement within their denomination or were submitted by a gay member as being an unofficially welcoming and safe place for gays and lesbians. While I'm not able to guarantee that every congregation on this list will be a place of welcome for you at the time you visit, the churches provided here are a good place to begin in your search for a community of faith. Please let me know of any positive or negative experiences you encounter as a visitor or member of any of these congregations which will assist me in future recommendations. Churches are listed by denomination and the city in which they are located. Addresses and phone numbers should be accessible through your local yellow pages under the congregations denominational affiliation.
