Jewish Vegetarianism Theological Perspectives on Judaism and Vegetarianism
The Jewish Vegetarian Ideal
Jewish vegetarianism is a philosophy and lifestyle, based upon Jewish teachings and mandates, that prescribes a diet centered on grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds and that proscribes the consumption of all animal flesh, including that of fish and fowl. Many well known Jews have followed a Jewish vegetarian lifestyle. Rabbi Abraham Isaac Hakohen Kook, the first chief rabbi of modern Israel, considered vegetarianism to be the ideal, the ultimate peace between mankind and the rest of the animal kingdom. He felt that in the Messianic Age, as prophesied by Isaiah (XI:7) , we would all be vegetarian again and the only sacrifices offered would be the mincha sacrifice, which was of vegetable origin. Although there is some debate regarding Rav Kook's consistency in following a vegetarian diet, Rabbi She'ar Yashuv Cohen, the current Chief Rabbi of Haifa, has written, "I myself, am a vegetarian, following in the footsteps of my late father, the saintly Nazir of Jerusalem [Rabbi David Cohen], and his teacher, the saintly first Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Avraham Isaac Hacohen Kook." Other well known Jewish vegetarians include Rabbi David Rosen, former Chief Rabbi of Ireland, the late Rabbi Shlomo Goren z"l , Chief Rabbi of Israel, and Avraham Burg (vegan - strict vegetarian), the youngest and only religious person ever to be elected Knesset Speaker, whose diet reflects his respect for the sanctity of all life. Thus, Jewish vegetarianism has had many prominent adherents.

Quotes About Vegetarianism and Compassion
I was looking through the booklet that came with the Moby CD Everything is Wrong , and I noticed that he included several very revealing quotes from important people about vegetarianism and human compassion. So, I decided to use those as the seed of my own personal collection. Be enlightened. I don't understand why asking people to eat a well-balanced vegetarian diet is considered drastic, while it is medically conservative to cut people open. Dean Ornish, M.D. I have no doubt that it is part of the destiny of the human race in its gradual improvement to leave off eating animals. Henry David Thoreau Your choice of diet can influence your long term health prospects more than any other action you might take. Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet. Albert Einstein Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace. Albert Schweitzer If you have men who will exclude any of god's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.

First broadcast on www.provet.co.uk This information is provided by Provet for educational purposes only. You should seek the advice of your veterinarian if your pet is ill as only he or she can correctly advise on the diagnosis and recommend the treatment that is most appropriate for your pet. Vegetarianism is gaining popularity in human society and vegetarian pet owners often wish to feed their pets an exclusively vegetarian diet - but is it safe ? From a nutritional point of view our pets can be classified into one of these groups
  • Carnivores - eat food material derived from other animals Herbivores - eat food material derived from plants, ie they are vegetarians Omnivores - eat food material derived from either other animals or from plants. Some omnivores can obtain all their nutritional requirements from a vegetarian ration. Grain or seed eaters (birds - hardbilled)) Insectivore - eat insects (birds - softbilled) Fish / plankton eaters (waterbirds)
Unfortunately this definition is confusing because the scientific definition of a "carnivore" is based upon anatomical characteristics and evolutionary evidence and it sometimes does not agree with the actual feeding capabilities of the species concerned.

Home Jewish Vegetarianism Online Course FAQ ... Media Why is it that many Jewish religious leaders advocate vegetarianism, including the late Chief Rabbi of Israel Shlomo Goren and the first Chief Rabbi of pre-state Israel Abraham Kook? Why is it that the former Chief Rabbi of Ireland David Rosen considers "the consumption of meat as halachically unacceptable"? Why is it that, after India, Israel has the largest number of faith-based vegetarians in the world? The Torah is full of commandments demanding humane treatment of animals, yet the modern factory farms that produce over 90% of the animal products we consume today raise their animals in unconscionable conditions of abject misery. The Torah reflects great concern for the land, yet as the primary cause of water pollution, water use, topsoil erosion, destruction of the world's rainforest, and other environmental harms, animal agriculture takes a devastating toll on the planet. Jewish teachings emphasize the grave importance of protecting human health, yet the consumption of animal products in the United States is responsible for numerous diseases including heart disease, America's number one killer. Judaism places great concern on providing for the poor and the hungry, yet while 800 million people do not have enough food to sustain themselves, our carnivorous diets are at least ten times as wasteful of food resources as a vegetarian one. Please read and learn about the growing Jewish vegetarian movement, and think about how Jewish teachings relate to decisions we make everyday as we sit down to eat. As Rabbi Isaac ha-Levi Herzog said, "Jews will move increasingly to vegetarianism out of their own deepening knowledge of what their tradition commands... A whole galaxy of central rabbinic and spiritual leaders...has been affirming vegetarianism as the ultimate meaning of Jewish moral teaching."

VEGFAM FEEDING THE WORLD
Everyone wants famine to end.
But can anyone do anything to stop it? Will the starving millions be with us forever? The scale of the problem is vast. In the Asian, African and Latin American countries, well over 500 million people are living in what the World Bank has called "absolute poverty". Every year 15 million children die of hunger. Quite simply we are not feeding the World. But what is going wrong? Are there too many people? Can famine be prevented? Or is it an "Act of God"? What can we do to stop famine? Go Vegetarian! Or better still Vegan. That is the first real step to make. You will be helping to alleviate human famine by taking less out of the World's finite resources. And you will be boycotting cruelly-produced products from the slaughterhouse. Animals do not produce food. They waste it. It takes about 30lb of cattle feed to produce 1lb of beef. With the advent of factory farming over the last few decades, there has been a marked increase in the consumption of grain by the West. For example the total consumption of cereals per head of the population each year is about 1 ton. But only about 155lbs is eaten directly, mainly in the form of bread. The rest is eaten by farm animals. In stark contrast, the grain consumed per head in the developing countries averages around 4201bs each year. The majority of this being eaten directly. Millons upon millons of animals are imprisoned in cages.

The Vegetarian Diet:
Advantages of Vegetarianism
by Phaedron It is not the intention here to attempt to persuade readers to become vegetarians. Instead, this is an objective answer to those who want to know the advantages of vegetarianism. A vegetarian is one who eats no animal products. Some people call themselves vegetarians but still eat fish and chicken; be assured those two species still belong to the animal kingdom—they have flesh and blood just like a cow or a human or a deer. Also he or she uses a minimum of leather, only where necessary. There are three issues to consider in regard to vegetarianism. They are: nutritional, spiritual, and moral. Nutritionally, the alkaline-based digestive system of humans will not properly break down substantial acid substances, the greatest of which is meat. (Also, the amount of cholesterol in meat is unhealthy.) Colon cancer is rampant! This is caused by the slow evacuation and the putrefaction in the colon of the remains of meat. Lifelong vegetarians never suffer from such an illness.

20 Questions About Vegetarianism
by Renee Cloe, ACE Certified Personal Trainer 1. What are the different types of vegetarians? 2. What are the health benefits of a vegetarian diet? 3. Is it possible to get enough protein on a vegetarian diet? 4. How much protein do I need, anyway? ... 20. Where can I get more information? 1. What are the different types of vegetarians? There are several different variations of the vegetarian diet. Strict vegetarians, called vegans , eat no animal products at all. The staples of their diets are fruits, vegetables, legumes (beans and peas), grains, seeds, and nuts. Lacto-vegetarians eat dairy products in addition to plant foods. Lacto-ovo vegetarians include dairy products and eggs as well as plant foods in their diets. People who eat animal flesh (meat, fish, chicken) are not considered to be vegetarians. However, as the health benefits of a vegetarian diet become more widely known, many people reduce or eliminate animal products. For example, they may eat fish and chicken but no red meat, or they may eat meat in small portions only a few times a week. These people can most accurately be described as following a semi-vegetarian diet.

59. Myths And Truths— About Vegetarianism(by Stephen Byrnes, ND, PhD, RNCP)
THE MYTHS OF vegetarianism. by Stephen Byrnes, PhD, RNCP. THE VALUE OF vegetarianism. As a cleansing diet, vegetarianism is sometimes a good choice.
http://www.westonaprice.org/myths_truths/myths_truths_vegetarianism.html
THE MYTHS OF VEGETARIANISM
by Stephen Byrnes, PhD, RNCP Originally published in the , July 2000.
This paper is posted at http://www.powerhealth.net/selected_articles.htm Revised January 2002 "An unflinching determination to take the whole evidence into account is the only method of preservation against the fluctuating extremes of fashionable opinion."
Bill and Tanya sat before me in my office in a somber mood: they had just lost their first baby in the second month of pregnancy. Tanya was particularly upset. "Why did this happen to me? Why did I miscarry my baby?" The young couple had come to see me mostly because of Tanya's recurrent respiratory infections, but also wanted some advice as to how they could avoid the heartache of another failed pregnancy. Upon questioning Tanya about her diet, I quickly saw the cause of her infections, as well as her miscarriage: she had virtually no fat in her diet and was also mostly a vegetarian. Because of the plentiful media rhetoric about the supposed dangers of animal product consumption, as opposed to the alleged health benefits of the vegetarian lifestyle, Tanya had deliberately removed such things as cream, butter, meats and fish from her diet. Although she liked liver, she avoided it due to worries over "toxins." Tanya and Bill left with a bottle of vitamin A, other supplements and a dietary prescription that included plentiful amounts of animal fats and meat. Just before leaving my office, Tanya looked at me and said ruefully: "I just don't know what to believe sometimes. Everywhere I look there is all this low-fat, vegetarian stuff recommended. I followed it, and look what happened." I assured her that if she and her husband changed their diets and allowed sufficient time for her weakened uterus to heal, they would be happy parents in due time. In November 2000, Bill and Tanya happily gave birth to their first child, a girl.
