81. Grassroots Veganism With Joanne Stepaniak
My mom and relatives are against my vegetarianism and concerns for animal rights. My mom does not take me seriously when I try to discuss buying crueltyfree products and not wearing fur and leather. When I wrote to vegetarian groups requesting information, she wrote them also telling them to stop sending weird pictures of factory farms, to children. Read on for answers to this question.

Document Use:
People become vegetarians for many reasons. These may include religious reasons (Hindu, Moslem, Buddist, Seventh Day Adventist), health, fad, economic, or moral [against the killing of animals] reasons. Just as people are vegetarians for different reasons, the diets of vegetarians are not all the same. With careful planning, a vegetarian diet can be healthy, no matter which type of vegetarian diet you choose. Let's first define a vegetarian diet. Some people define vegetarianism loosely. They may say they are "almost" vegetarians because they don't eat red meat (but they do eat poultry and fish). However, a true vegetarian is a person who eats no meat. There are two basic kinds:
    1. lacto (milk) - ovo (egg) vegetarians:
They don't eat any meat, but do eat eggs, milk, and other dairy products such as cheese, butter, and yogurt. Some people are just lacto vegetarians; they eat dairy products, but not eggs. Some are ovo vegetarians; they eat eggs, but no other animal foods. 2. vegan: They do not eat any animal products. In some cases, this includes avoiding honey.

FAQ: Animal Rights
Do animals have rights? What is the Objectivist position on animal cruelty? What is the Objectivist position on vegetarianism? Answer by Damian Moskovitz Many believe that animals have the right to be free from harm by people. In particular, they believe that animals should not be harmed in food production, clothing production, or medical research. This belief is the product of a misunderstanding of the nature of rights. Philosophers like Peter Singer argue that rights are derived from the capacity to experience pain, and since animals can experience pain just as people can, animals also have the right to be free from harm. However, rights are derived from the capacity to reason, and thus people have rights and animals do not. Both people and animals seek values such as food and shelter to sustain their lives. However, they do so by different means. Animals pursue values in their environment automatically. For example, an animal scavenges and finds food around it. People, on the other hand, use their faculties of reason to produce values volitionally. For example, a person can choose to study how plants grow and choose to plant and grow his own food. Moreover, people trade values with each other. For example, if one person grows vegetables and another person weaves clothing, the former can give the latter vegetables in exchange for clothing to their mutual benefit.

I. Must We Kill in order to Live?
Vegetarianism, known in Sanskrit as Shakahara, was for thousands of years a principle of health and environmental ethics throughout India. Though Muslim and Christian colonization radically undermined and eroded this ideal, it remains to this day a cardinal ethic of Hindu thought and practice. A subtle sense of guilt persists among Hindus who eat meat, and there exists an ongoing controversy on this issue on which we hope this humble booklet will shed some light.
For India's ancient thinkers, life is seen as the very stuff of the Divine, an emanation of the Source and part of a cosmic continuum. They further hold that each life form, even water and trees, possesses consciousness and energy. Nonviolence, ahimsa, the primary basis of vegetarianism, has long been central to the religious traditions of India-especially Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Religion in India has consistently upheld the sanctity of life, whether human, animal or, in the case of the Jains, elemental.

When I look out into the world, I see the forces that would bring us disaster. I see the deep night of unthinkable cruelty and blindness. But I also look within the human heart and find something of love there, something that cares and shines out into the dark universe like a bright beacon. And in the shining of that light, I feel the dreams and prayers of all beings. In the shining of that beacon I feel all of our hopes for a better future, and the strength to do what we are here to do. May all be fed. May all be healed. May all be loved. John Robins

Recommended Products The Myths of Vegetarianism by Stephen Byrnes, ND, PhD, RNCP "An unflinching determination to take the whole evidence into account is the only method of preservation against the fluctuating extremes of fashionable opinion" Alfred North Whitehead Bill and Tanya sat before me in my office in a sombre mood: they had just lost their first baby in the second month of pregnancy. Tanya was particularly upset: "Why did this happen to me? Why did I miscarry my baby?" The young couple had come to see me mostly because of Tanya's recurrent respiratory infections, but also wanted some advice as to how they could avoid the heartache of another failed pregnancy. Upon questioning Tanya about her diet, I quickly saw the cause of her infections, as well as her miscarriage: she had virtually no fat in her diet and was also mostly a vegetarian. Because of the plentiful media rhetoric about the supposed dangers of animal product consumption, as opposed to the supposed health benefits of the vegetarian lifestyle, Tanya had deliberately removed such things as cream, butter, meats and fish from her diet. Although she liked liver, she avoided it due to worries over "toxins."

"We have enslaved the rest of animal creation and have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were to formulate a religion, they would depict the Devil in human form." William Ralph Inge E ach day we butcher millions of other sentient beings because we like the taste of their flesh. The functional development and intensity of suffering of our victims tend to match the capacities of human infants and toddlers. The contrast in our attitude and behaviour toward them could scarcely be greater. I magine the anguish caused by an oxyacetylene torch applied, if only to a few seconds, to your child's face. Unspeakably appalling? Yet each day we pay - by our choice in food purchases - to have other living creatures treated no less abominably. A n over-statement? Surely factory-farming and the apparatus of mechanised killing, even in their worst excesses, are rarely that bad? No, in a sense the reality is worse . What it feels like for our victims is more terrible than we can typically imagine. In fact, on the few occasions in life when pain that's even relatively severe strikes us down personally, we are shocked. The casual use of the word "pain" evokes only a pale shadow of the frightfulness of the experience that lies behind it. Severe pain really is uniquely awful. Only the state-dependence of memory helps us forget just how bad pain can be. The problem is not that our everyday language is emotive. It's that we can't use it to be emotive enough.

Executive Summary Survey results indicate that 2 to 7 percent of Americans regard themselves as vegetarians, but less than 1 percent completely exclude meat, poultry, fish, and shellfish from their diets. Even fewer Americans choose vegan diets that exclude all foods of animal origin. Some scientific studies indicate that vegetarians have lower risks of chronic diseases than do meat eaters. However, some of the apparent benefits of vegetarianism may be attributable to aspects of the vegetarian diet other than the absence of meat or to nondietary aspects of typical vegetarian lifestyles. It is not necessary to give up meat and become a vegetarian to enjoy the benefits of a healthy diet. Vegetarian diets that include dairy products are usually nutritionally adequate, as long as care is taken to include good sources of bioavailable iron and zinc in the diet. Diets completely devoid of animal products (vegan diets) may not be nutritionally adequate unless they are very carefully planned. Vegans should take supplements of vitamin B12 or eat soy products or cereals fortified with vitamin B12. They may also need supplements of vitamin D, iron, zinc, and calcium.

96. Is Vegetarianism Healthier Than Nonvegetarianism?

Search ACSH Site News from ACSH Alcohol Diseases Environmental Health ... Sign ACSH Guestbook Volume 9 Number 3 1997 Is Vegetarianism Healthier Than Nonvegetarianism? Some vegetarian diets provide less fat, less saturated fat, and fewer calories than typical nonvegetarian diets and have a higher content of fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain products. They thus conform more closely to official dietary guidelines. Eliminating meat from the diet can facilitate decreasing saturated-fat intake and increasing vegetable consumption. But by no means does eliminating meat ensure The health of vegetarians may be better than that of nonvegetarians partly because of nondietary factors: Many vegetarians are health-conscious. They exercise regularly, maintain a desirable body weight, and abstain from smoking. Although most epidemiologists have attempted to take such factors into account in their analyses, it is possible that they did not adequately control their studies for nondietary effects. People who are vegetarians by choice may differ from the general population in other ways relevant to health. For example, in Western countries most vegetarians are more affluent than nonvegetarians and thus have better living conditions and more access to medical care. An authoritative review of vegetarianism and chronic diseases classified the evidence for various alleged health benefits of vegetarianism:
  • The evidence is "strong" that vegetarians have (a) a lower risk of becoming alcoholic, constipated, or obese and (b) a lower risk of developing lung cancer.

Nutritional pros and cons of Meat-based and Vegetarian Diets
Most individuals who have switched to a vegetarian lifestyle at some point in their lives (who weren't
born into it), have done so following some form of perceived enlightenment, or after the realization that
consuming animal products is either anti-religious, anti-earth (to save the planet), against animal rights,
or that it is simply unhealthy.  I have been testing and treating a large number of vegetarian patients over
more than two decades, so I'm presenting arguments for and against the consumption of animal-based
products from a health -point of view.
Contrary to vegan-based reviews or commentaries, people following a strict vegetarian diet are not
healthier than their omnivorous counterparts.  In fact, on average , they suffer from as many, or more
medical complaints as compared to non-vegetarian individuals, who include meat or eggs in their diet. There is absolutely no question that the average person does best health-wise by consuming a mixed diet that is as fresh, and hopefully as unprocessed as possible.  Beyond that, an individual assessment

Three reasons to be vegetarian. Reprinted on the Web by the International Vegetarian Union (IVU).
http://www.ivu.org/religion/articles/buddhist.html
International Vegetarian Union (IVU) Religion and Vegetarianism
A Buddhist Perspective on Vegetarianism

by Lin Ching Shywan, from Vegetarian Cooking Chinese Style I have been a strict vegetarian for more than four years now. When I first gave up meat, quite a few of my friends and relatives expressed concern; most people seem to have the idea that vegetarian food lacks adequate nutrients. And being vegetarian can be a more than minor inconvenience with the amounts of meat and fish that people now eat. Chinese have a traditional notion that foods that are "warming" in nature, like meat, are important for building up physical strength; so in the minds of some of the older generation, one could not possibly get all the nutrition one needed form the "cool" bean greens, white radishes, and so forth that vegetarians favor. In their book, the only things that strengthen the body are foods like tiger phallus, snake blood, stewed chicken and crab in wine. Before taking the big step, I didn't give nutrition, convenience, or building up physical strength a second thought, since my reason for becoming vegetarian had nothing to do with any of these. I became vegetarian because of my belief in Buddhism. Why do Buddhists advocate vegetarianism? The main reason is "mercy", and because we "cannot bear to eat the flesh of living creatures." And our belief in karma tells us that we must eventually suffer the consequences of our evil actions. A Buddhist sutra says: "The bodhisattva fears the original action; the myriad of living creatures fear the consequences." This means that the bodhisattva knows the seriousness of the consequences and does not do evil things; neither does he think about the causes of bad consequences. Finally, I also believe that a vegetarian diet better enables one to keep a pure body and mind and this purity is an important foundation of self-cultivation. My conversion to vegetarianism was based on these three considerations.
