Religion plays an important role in the lives of the Vietnamese community in the United States. The St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and the Long Van Temple provide a glimpse on how the Vietnamese community is helping to change the landscape of Orlando and surrounding Central Florida communities. Many activities for the Vietnamese people revolve around these centers of worship. Activities such as tutorial sessions of the Vietnamese language for the younger generation, social gatherings, religious ceremonies and rites, and the celebration of the biggest holiday in the Vietnamese community the Tet Nguyen Dan or the Lunar New Year festival held each winter to mark the first morning of the first day of the new period are held at both the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and the Long Van Temple. So, given the importance religion plays in the lives of the Vietnamese community here in this area, to what capacity religion affected the migration of the Vietnamese? In other words, what did the Catholic Church and Buddhism do in order to help people immigrate and resettle in this country which in turn change the landscape of the Orlando religiously? Buddhism In America Short paper due on one of the below eight topics in lecture on October 30. For Sections October 23: 1. Sometimes observers distinguish between Asian immigrant Buddhism in the U.S. and the new forms of American Buddhism, but clearly the "Asian immigrant" population is diverse and variegated, bringing many experiences and hopes to the U.S. How would you briefly describe the landscape of "Asian immigrant" Buddhism? Select two Asian immigrant communities (Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.) analyzing the differences between their heritage and experience. 2. The Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights, California has been at the center of a controversy over political fundraising during the 1996 campaign. In your seminar on American politics, hardly anyone knows much about Buddhism in America. How would you explain the history of this temple, the kind of Buddhism that is practiced there, setting it in the context of a wider look at Chinese Buddhism in the U.S.? 3. The Lotus Flower Temple (Chua Lien Hoa) in Garden Grove, California is one of hundreds of Vietnamese temples in the U.S. Beginning with this temple and its history of zoning controversies, explore the range of Vietnamese Buddhism in the U.S. Discuss the Garden Grove controversy from the perspective of the neighbors, the zoning board, and Vietnamese Buddhist community.

Buddhism (from the Sanskrit, meaning "enlightened one") is a world religion founded in India by Siddharta Gautama Buddha (ca. 563 - ca. 483 B.C.) It exists in two forms: Hinayana (Sanskrit "little vehicle") or Theravada (Pali "old doctrine") Buddhism (found in Burma, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and elsewhere), and Mahayana (Sanskrit "great vehicle") Buddhism (found in China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Tibet, and elsewhere). Under the Bodhi tree (the tree of enlightenment) the prince Gautama became enlightened about the four basic truths: a) human existence is pain; b) the cause of pain is desire; c) pain ceases with the emancipation from every form of desire; d) the cessation of pain may be attained through the eightfold way of deliverance. This way involves right knowledge of these four truths, right intention, right spech, right action, right occupation, right effort, right control of sensations and ideas, and right concentration. This way promises to end suffering (which feeds on desire) and lead to nirvana (Sanskrit "being extinguished") or a complete state of peace. The Buddhist scriptures exist in Pali (Sri Lanka) and Sanskrit (India). Two basic doctrines of Buddhism are: a) that of

VIETNAM Let go of the past, let go of the future, let go of the present, and cross overto the farther shore of existence. With mind wholly liberated, you shall come no more to birth and death. ~ Dhammapada 348 B uddhism came to Vietnam in the first century C.E. By the end of the second century, Vietnam developed a major Buddhist center commonly known as the Luy-Lau center, in the Bac-Ninh province, north of the present Hanoi city. That center was established by a Indian Buddhist missionary, following the sea route from the Indian sub-continent to China. A number of Mahayana sutras and the Agamas were translated into Chinese scripts at that center, including the sutra of Forty Two Chapters , the Anapanasati , the Vessantara-jataka , the Milinda-panha ,etc In the next 18 centuries, due to geographical proximity with China the two countries shared many common cultural, philosophical and religious features. Vietnamese Buddhism has been greatly influenced by development of Mahayana Buddhism in China, with the dominant traditions of Ch'an/Zen, Pure Land, and the Diamond Vehicle. The southern part of the present Vietnam was originally occupied by the Cham (Champa)and the Cambodian (Khmer) people who followed both a syncretic Saiva-Mahayana Buddhism and Theravada Buddhism, although Champa probably had a Theravada presence from as early as the 3rd century CE, whilst Cambodia received the Theravada as late as the 12th century. The Vietnamese started to conquer and absorbed the land in the 15th century, and the current shape of the country was finalized in the 18th century. From that time onward, the dominant Viet followed the Mahayana tradition whilst the ethnic Cambodian practiced the Theravada tradition, and both traditions co-existed peacefully.

Ch’an Master Wei Li Thich Duy Luc in Vietnamese] is of the 89th generation in the Ch’an tradition, tracing down from Mahakasyapa. Born in 1923 in the province of Canton, China, he came to Vietnam in 1938 where he later became a school teacher of Chinese and then an Oriental medicine doctor. For 8 years, he worked at the free-of-charge medical office of Minh Nguyet Cu Si Lam Buddhist temple in Can Tho There was at Cu Si Lam temple a complete series of the Supplementary Tripitaka of 150 volumes. The Master wanted to read the whole series. But after one year of reading with an average of 10 hours a day, he was only able to read 7 volumes. Seeing that it would take him at least 20 years, just to complete reading the Supplementary Tripitaka, let alone the Main Tripitaka, the Master decided that he would only read the volumes on Ch’an In 1965, he began practicing under the guidance of Ch’an Master Dieu Duyen of the Patriarch Ch’an tradition. Master Dieu Duyen was a close disciple of the eminent Chinese Ch’an Masters Hsu Yun [Empty Cloud] and Lai Kuo for many years.

    The Clock Tower Sangha
of Magical Maynard Breathe! You are Alive! Welcome to the home-page of the Clock Tower Sangha of Maynard, Massachusetts. We are a community of mindfulness students and practitioners who live in the towns northwest of Boston, Massachusetts. We are a diverse community of Buddhist practitioners inspired by teachings from many different Buddhist traditions, especially those of Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and Zen priest Claude AnShin Thomas, both of whom urge us to enact mindfulness moment to moment in everything we do in daily life.
We gather to practice sitting, walking, and other forms of mindfulness meditation together and to support each other in our practice and in our daily lives. Our sangha is affiliated with the Zaltho Sangha, which is part of the White Plum Soto Zen community in the United States, and with the Tiep Hien Order (Order of Interbeing), which is part of the Unified Buddhist Church. The Tiep Hien Order was founded byThich Nhat Hanh in the1960s as a way to engage the practices of mindfulness more directly in the world The Zaltho Sangha was founded by Claude AnShin Thomas, a Zen Priest and Brother of the Zen Peacemaker Order, in the 1990s with a similar purpose. Some of our members are long-time students of mindfulness; others are relatively new to the practice. Some of us have studied directly with teachers such as Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, Sylvia Boorstein, AnShin Thomas, Thich Nhat Hanh and others; and others of us come from diverse practice traditions in the vipassana, zen and Tibetan Buddhist worlds as well as from non-Buddhist traditions. We welcome everyone and we are enriched by the experiences and insights which come from each one of us.
