  • PRESS QUOTES While many have tried, few have succeeded in building a truly compelling magazine on the Web. Salon has managed to move to the top of the Web's short must-read list. Time Smart, literate and inflected with sufficient attitude and irreverence so as not to seem a mere print journal recycled onto the screen. New York Times Magazine Think: Tom Wolfe's New Journalism with an even smarter mouth. Biz sense: Right on. Grade: A Entertainment Weekly A hip place to get culture and technology news. Newsweek Smart and elegant with an atmosphere that no other Web site has been able to produce quite so skillfully. An ahead-of-the-curve, culturally adroit mag that has extended its lead over the pack. Takes popular culture seriously with on-target coverage of current music, without pandering to the average, two-beats-too-slow reader of Rolling Stone.

    FAIR ACTION ALERT:
Why Does Tim Russert Associate With Don Imus' Bigotry? March 1, 2000
If you're concerned about bigotry on the syndicated radio show "Imus in the Morning," you should just "get over it." That's what the show's star, Don Imus, told journalist Jeff Greenfield on CNN 's Larry King Live last week (2/24/00).  Greenfield was questioning Imus about recent columns in two prominent newspapers that documented a pattern of slurs by Imus and his on-air sidekicks against people of color, gay men and lesbians ( Boston Globe Newsday Imus himself has referred to one African-American journalist as "a cleaning lady," another as a "quota hire," and tennis player Amelie Mauresmo as "a big old lesbo." Imus taunted another reporter as a "beanie-wearing little Jewboy," called a disabled colleague "the cripple," and has said that he picked one of his producers to do "nigger jokes." (60 Minutes, 7/19/98) National politicians and beltway journalists have brought the "Imus in the Morning" show to nationwide prominencethe show is now carried by cable network MSNBC by making "Imus" a regular stop on their media rounds.

By Dennis Loy Johnson In an episode reminiscent of Mary McCarthy's famous, hell-raising put-down of Lillian Hellman "Every word she writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the.'" a single sentence recently caused a furor in the New York literary scene. Renata Adler had already been under heavy fire for weeks before anyone even noticed her statement, in her book

Bradley, Gore Court D.C.'s Non-Voting 'Senator'
    Shadow in Doubt
by Jason Vest January 26 - February 1, 2000 Automatic superdelegate Strauss: "This is really the only vote I have that counts...." ASHINGTON—Senator Paul Strauss of the District of Columbia is indeed a senator; he's got the ID card, license plates, and dining room privileges to prove it. What he doesn't have is the actual right to vote—let alone set foot—on the floor of the Senate, which is what happens when the jurisdiction one represents is, effectively speaking, a colony. 'No New Yorker would stand for this,' D.C.'s "shadow senator" seethes as he tugs at the lump of rock and metal on his finger—a 1996 Yankees championship ring, given to his father by George Steinbrenner. "Would a New Yorker put up with having to get permission from a congressman in Kansas—where they're still debating the merits of teaching evolution—to implement a working local AIDS policy?" he rhetorically asks, no trace of Washington deference in his combative New York accent. "We had an effective needle-exchange program that was working here, but a congressman from Kansas blocked it so he could score political points back home."

    http://history.mennonite.net/articles/apolity.html
Anabaptist/Mennonite Group Dynamics Leonard Gross[1] I used to enjoy the New Yorker magazine's "Talk of the Town," the way it generally began with something like: "Last week as we were traveling by taxi past Wall Street," or "We happened onto an old friend yesterday, in Central Park, feeding the pigeons." Or something like that. I knew it was a literary "we," a construct, yet nevertheless, it worked for me granting the feeling that New York indeed was a community, with fine human interaction, a place where one could spend his or her life in meaningful ways. I think the new editor of the New Yorker made a mistake in stopping this, some six or more years ago, for I have sorely missed experiencing this meaningful literary "we" ever since. I think about it each week when I turn to "Talk of the Town," and alas, find out that New York City is no longer "we." And I think to myself, perhaps Greater New York is not the place where the "we" of close community most naturally comes into its own. Maybe it is indeed more naturally found in closely knit congregations such as Michael Sattler’s and Pilgram Marpeck’s, founded as they were, directly and indirectly, upon the deeper implications of what the two 1527 Swiss Anabaptist congregational statements were all about. And I ask myself: What would it be like for me to be part of the actual "we" of New York City? And, conversely, what would it be like, for our purposes here, to be part of Pilgram Marpeck’s Augsburg congregation, or Conrad Grebel’s Zurich congregation, or Michael Sattler’s congregation at Horb?

Friday, November 29, 2002 Dumas To Be Moved To Pantheon Alexandre Dumas is one of the most popular French novelists of all time. But he's not been officially honored. That changes this week when his remains are moved to the Pantheon in Paris. "He will then be laid to rest alongside other French literary greats such as Victor Hugo and Emile Zola." BBC Supplementary Pleasures Everything about The Times Literary Supplement, that "coded message to the intellectual elite whose 36 pages of densely packed articles have come out regularly for the past century and a bit" is "endearingly odd." The TLS's "circulation has never topped 50,000 and is now level-pegging at about 35,000 worldwide" but its influence is enormous. The Times (UK) 11/29/02 Art Of Words An American designer has produced "an interactive program (found at Textarc.org) that reproduces the text of more than 2,000 books as works of art. The software converts the text into an interactive map that allows viewers to quickly see relationships between words and characters at a glance, even without having read the book."
