Acoelomate Animals
I. PhylumPlatyhelminthes
(the Flat worms) and Phylum Nermetea (the Proboscis or Ribbon worms) are the first bilaterally symmetrical animals (with cephalization -"getting a head") we have studied. PLEASE REFER TO THE ANIMAL CHARACTERISTICS TABLE A. bodies are dorso-ventrally compressed; about 20,000 species, many are parasitic; exhibit all three germ layers and the tissue-organ to organ-system level of organization; incomplete digestive system (no gut in tapeworms, absorb food pre-digested by host through body wall). PLANARIAN PROTONEPHRIDIA TRANSPARENCY B. pronephridia in parenchyma; called flame cells because cilia beat in succession like a candle flame flickering. PLANARIAN BODY SYSTEMS TRANSPARENCY C. cephalization apparent in nervous system; enlarged ganglia in head with lateral nerve cords connected by transverse nerves; tactile, photoreceptor and chemoreceptor(e.g. on auricles of planaria) sense organs (planarians exhibit negative phototaxis). D. reproduction: asexual fission in planarians;

2. Discuss the concept of the organ/system level of organization and apply this to the phylums to be studied in this unit.
3. Define bilateral symmetry and cephalization.
4. Compare the enbryo development in cnidarians and in the higher metazoa, including presence, formation and function of the mesoderm.

6. Describe flame cells and their function in general, and the excretory system of planaria in particular.
7. Briefly describe these advances of the flatworms over previously studied phyla: symmetry, nervous and sensory systems, mesoderm formation, muscle systems, excretory systems, digestive systems and reproductive systems.
8. Explain the terms hermaphroditic, monoecious and dioecious, and state what animal types in general are hermaphroditic.
9. List features which will be expected in higher phyla but are not possessed by the flatworms, and tell why these features are unnecessary in flatworms.

Back to Schedule Printer Doc PDF Acoelomates and Pseudocoelomates - THIS WORMY WORLD I. The Bilateria A. Includes all phyla above Cnidaria and Ctenophora Characteristics: a. Bilateral symmetry - adapted for motility b. Triploblastic - ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm c. Organ-system level of complexity: e.g. digestive, excretory, nervous, reproductive systems d. Cephalization - concentration of nerve ganglia in head region. Adapted for motility. II. The Acoelomates - lacking a body cavity between body wall and gut. A. Phylum Platyhelminthes - the flatworms, especially free-living. Characteristics a. Gut, if present, without anus b. Cephalization not strongly developed c. High surface-volume ratio as a result of flat shape (Important in locomotion and in exchange of materials in parasitic forms). d. No circulatory system. Organs near surface of exchange. Locomotion a. Small turbellarians ciliated, swim b. Larger turbellarians travel on substrate, use cilia and distribute weight. c. Longitudinal, circular and dorso-ventral muscles contract against tissue fluids, which serve as a "hydrostatic skeleton". This enables the animal

ACOELOMATES and Pseudocoelomates
Chapter 33 and 41
Objectives
1. List differences between the phylum Platyhelminthes and the phylum Cnidaria
2. Know excretory, nervous, and reproductive system of planarians
3. Distinguish among the four classes of Platyhelminthes and give examples
4. Know regeneration in planarians /regeneration in general
5. Describe the life cycles of some trematodes and cestodes
6. List characteristics of the phylum Nematoda that distinguish it from the other phyla
7. Give examples of parasitic and freeliving nematodes Some major differences between the phylum Platyhelminthes (flatworms) and the phylum Cnidaria
ACOELOMATES Phylum Platyhelminthes Flatworms): exhibit bilateral symmetry and cephalization * are triploblastic the mesoderm gives rise to a wide variety of tissues replacement of mesoglea by mesodermal parenchyma which contains more cells and fibers possess several distinct organs, organ systems and true muscles the nervous system has a brain like concentration of ganglia and definite longitudinal nerve trunks although the gut lacks an anus it is more complex than that of the cnidarians when present the reproductive system is highly developed with male structures for copulation presence of an excretory system * reproductive system * nervous system present Excretory system: What are Protonephridia
  • Protonephridia consists of a network of fine tubules running the length of the animal on each side.
