oo Is this the Bay Area's Cleanest Season?
Breathe deep!
Winter is ending and the air will be rid of much of the particulate pollution that comes from woodburning. Temperatures are cool to moderate and seasonal windflow will keep ozone concentrations in the " GOOD "range for most of the next three months. Does the air get any better than this..? Perhaps for some, it does not. Unfortunately for some others, we are entering the " hell months " as trees blossom and grasses regenerate. Folks with asthma and allergy problems are likely to suffer at this time of year. Click on the LINKS tab above where you'll find connections to pollen counts and other health-related topics. Even if you don't suffer from springtime breathing problems, you should still be mindful of those who do. It may not be Spare the Air season, but driving less is a good idea for any season. By helping to reduce air pollution you'll be aiding those less fortunate who's breathing ability is already hampered by flowering eucalyptus trees, ragweed and other wild plants coming into bloom. To the many of you who met the call and distributed the Woodburning Handbook in your neighborhoods and workplaces. Ultra fine particulate pollution is perhaps the greatest pollutant in our air and your contribution has greatly assisted us in educating people across all nine Bay Area counties.

The Federal government recently stated that "indoor pollution is worse than the pollution we are exposed to outdoors." There are literally hundreds of potentially harmful pollutants emanating from your walls, furniture, carpets, appliances as well as the odors from the body, pets, smoking, cooking, bathrooms, etcetera, etcetera.
Quantum Electronics Corporation has developed air treatments systems to help control indoor pollutants and odors for over 10 years. The newest and most advanced development is Quantum's sensored unit which monitors the air quality, and only operates when there are impurities in the air. This is an exclusive feature only available from Quantum. Quantum's units do not require replacement of expensive filters or costly corona discharge plates. All models are equipped with a washable, reusable filter which rarely needs service. All units are of the latest technology available. Three of Quantum's most popular models AccuAire™ For home or office, equipped with air quality

a number that is proportional to the "amount" of light removed from a sight path by absorption per unit distance.
absorption cross section
the amount of light absorbed by a particle divided by its physical cross section.
acidification
the decrease of acid neutralizing capacity in water or base saturation in soil caused by natural or anthropogenic processes.

air pollution produced when acid chemicals are incorporated into rain, snow, fog, or mist. See also acidic pollution in the parks.
adverse impact on an AQRV
an unacceptable effect, as identified by an FLM, that resultsfromcurrent, or would result from predicted, deterioration of air quality in a Federal Class I or Class II area ( See also Clean Air Act ). a determination of unacceptable effect shall be made on a case-by-case basis for each area taking into account existing air quality conditions. It should be based on a demonstration that the current or predicted deterioration of air quality will cause or contribute to a diminshment of the area's national significance, impairment of the structure and functioning of the area's ecosystem, or impairment of the quality of the visitor experience in the area.

California Air Quality Data This page updated January 7, 2003. The California Air Resources Board (ARB) compiles air quality data from monitoring stations throughout California. The data are used to evaluate the nature and severity of the air quality problems in the state and to assess air quality trends. The ARB makes air quality data available in two electronic forms: online and on compact disc Summaries of the 2003 ozone exeedances are available for selected California regions. The summaries include the number of state 1-hour, national 1-hour, and national 8-hour ozone exceedances, along with the highest 1-hour and 8-hour ozone concentrations (ppm).
Caution: Summaries are based on preliminary data. Preliminary data are subject to change or deletion. The provides the results of the annual review of the air monitoring stations in California. These stations house monitoring instruments that measure ambient levels of gaseous and particulate air pollutants. The information includes the location of the monitoring stations and the type of ambient air quality monitoring at each station. The 2002 California Almanac of Emissions and Air Quality is now available in Adobe Acrobat format. In addition, all tables from this document are available in both Excel and text formats so users can use these data to create alternate data presentations. The hard cover version of the 2002 California Almanac can be ordered through the

The information presented here reflects EPA's modeling of the Clear Skies Act of 2002. The Agency is in the process of updating this information to reflect modifications included in the Clear Skies Act of 2003. The revised information will be posted here as soon as possible. The proposed Clear Skies legislation would create a mandatory program that would dramatically reduce power plant emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and mercury by setting a national cap on each pollutant. Clear Skies was proposed in response to a growing need for an emission reduction plan that will protect the environment while providing regulatory certainty in the industry. The program was submitted as proposed legislation in the US House of Representatives on July 26, 2002 and in the US Senate on July 28, 2002. The program was reintroduced in the US House of Representatives (HR 999) and the US Senate (S. 485) as the Clear Skies Act of 2003 on February 27, 2003. (
