Aquatic Ecology Group Home Page
The Aquatic Ecology Group (AEG) consists of scientists from both the Department of Zoology at the University of Toronto and the Aquatic Ecosystems Science Section of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. The purpose of this partnership is to foster and develop a centre for excellence in aquatic ecology. Research and teaching activities are directed towards an increased understanding of the structure and productivity of aquatic ecosystems. While research and teaching activities are the primary goals of the partnership, it also focuses on developing new links between science and policy. Members of the Aquatic Ecology Group have joined together to conduct collaborative research in the following areas of mutual interest:

Twenty-five EEOB Graduate Students offered their goods and services in an effort to raise money for the Graduate Evolution and Ecology Student Organization (GEES) auction. It was a great success thanks to the many contributers and to the faculty, staff and students who won the various auctions. GEES collected over $1000 for their efforts. Dr. Peter Curtis, Cathy Drake and Leann Southward were among the winning bidders on an ice climbing adventure led by graduate student, Mike Haugen. More... EEOB Administrative Fiscal Officer, Cathy Drake, makes her way up a wall of ice somewhere in Hocking County.

    CENTER FOR AQUATIC ECOLOGY
    David Philipp , Director
The aquatic resources of Illinois range from streams and ponds to impoundments to a major floodplain river (the Mississippi) and one of the Great Lakes (Michigan). The mission of the Center for Aquatic Ecology is to conduct basic and applied research on the state's aquatic ecosystems and to investigate the biology of the associated flora and fauna. The Illinois Natural History Survey has employed respected and competent aquatic researchers since its inception under the direction of Stephen A. Forbes. The present Center staff is composed of nationally and internationally recognized scientists working in concert with a talented and dedicated support staff to conduct quality research that provides information for enlightened management and conservation of aquatic resources. From its Champaign headquarters, the Center for Aquatic Ecology maintains six permanent field stations: the Aquatic Research Field Laboratory in Champaign ("the ponds"), the Sam Parr Biological Station at Kinmundy, the Ridge Lake Station near Charleston, the Lake Michigan Biological Station at Zion, the Kaskaskia Biological Station at Lake Shelbyville, and the River Research Laboratory at the Stephen A. Forbes Biological Station in Havana. In addition, two field stations have been established on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers as components of a network of six stations operated by five states and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to collect and analyze data on fish populations, vegetation, and water quality for the Long-Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRM). This important system of field stations allows Center scientists to conduct valuable field research at sites that reflect the diversity within Illinois.

Background Information on Pfiesteria The toxic dinoflagellate, Pfiesteria piscicida , has been implicated as the primary causative agent of major fish kills and fish disease events (finfish and shellfish; 10 to 10 finfish) in North Carolina estuaries, coastal areas, and aquaculture operations. Pfiesteria and closely related toxic species (" Pfiesteria -like complex") have also been confirmed in fish kill/disease areas and aquaculture facilities outside North Carolina from the mid-Atlantic to the Gulf Coast. Fish kills caused by P. piscicida usually occur in the warmest part of the year, and often precede low dissolved oxygen levels in the estuaries. Pfiesteria likely has been in this region for a long time (thousands of years) as a nontoxic predator on other organisms (bacteria, algae, small animals). Many experiments in lab and field indicate, however, that human influences (e.g., excessive nutrient enrichment to the poorly flushed Albemarle-Pamlico estuarine ecosystem) have slowly shifted the environment to encourage Pfiesteria 's fish-killing activity.
