    The Arboreta:
"If you are thinking a year ahead, sow a seed. If you are thinking ten years ahead, plant a tree. If you are thinking one hundred years ahead, educate the people." Chinese Poet, 500 BC The Howard County Arboreta are arboreta without walls: there are no boundaries, no fences, no admission charges. We live in an ecologically rich environment with an extraordinary variety of native trees. To this abundance developers, county planners, landscape artists and individual homeowners have added a wonderful assortment of exotic species. In part, an arboretum is a collection of trees in an environment dedicated to education: teaching about the natural environment, raising conciousness about the impact each of us has on that environment. In Howard County we already have the trees and natural wooded areas. The arboretum program adds tags, interpretive signs, and other educational services to these abundant resources, enhancing their value to the entire community. The arboretum program is based on our conviction that an understanding of the importance of our local ecosystem is fundamental to having effective environmental programs. Becoming familiar with that ecosystem, learning the names of the trees, is one pathway to that more complete understanding.

    History
The government center hill is sometimes called "Governors' Hill." The office buildings on it are named for four Maryland Governors: Howard, Carroll, Ligon and Warfield, all residents of Howard County. The Howard Building, opened in 1978, is named for George Howard, son of John Eager Howard, a Revolutionary War hero for whom the county is named. George filled in after a Governor of Maryland died, from July 1831 to January 1833 and was then elected for a year's term. The Carroll Building, opened in 1967, is named for Governor John Lee Carroll, Governor of Maryland from 1876 to 1880. He lived in Doughregan Manor, still owned by the Carroll family. His campaign opponent from the Know-Nothing Party unsuccessfully attacked Governor Carroll's Roman Catholicism. The Ligon Building, connected to the Carroll Building, is named for Thomas Watkins Ligon, Governor of Maryland from 1854 to 1858. Ligon barely won over his Know-Nothing Party opponent from Montgomery County. Governor Ligon married into Howard County's Dorsey family.

    Arboretum - definicja
Nazwą arboretum (łac. 'miejsce zadrzewione, plantacja drzew' z arbor 'drzewo') określa się teren uprawy drzew i krzew³w do cel³w naukowo-badawczych (np. w zakresie ekologii, aklimatyzacji, hodowli) bądź teren kolekcji gromadzącej najczęściej obce gatunki drzew i krzew³w.
