75% of all living species belong to this phylum! It includes diverse groups such as insects and crustaceans. All arthropods have 3 body segments: head, thorax, and abdomen. These animals have a hard exoskeleton that is secreted from the epidermis (skin). Advantages of exoskeletons are that they are waterproof, and prevent dehydration and are good structures for protection from predators. The major component of the exoskeleton is a polysaccharide called chiton. When an arthropod grows, the exoskeleton must be molted External structure of a crab. and a new one is formed. Most marine arthropods belong to the Class Crustacea. Some examples of crustaceans are crab, lobster, shrimp and small planktonic creatures such as copepods and euphausids (krill). The head and thorax are fused in crustaceans, forming a single structure called a cephalothorax. The main body shell of the crustacean is called the carapace. They have 5 walking legs (periopods) and two pinchers (chelae). Crustaceans also have 2 sets of antennae and stalked eyes. One crustacean that was once believed to be a mollusc is the barnacle! Barnacles are only found in the marine environment and they are sedentary (do not move). Barnacle larvae settle on their heads and stick their feet in the air to feed! Introduction
Arthropods are bilaterally symmetrical segmented animals with paired and usually jointed appendages on some or all of the body segments. The body is surrounded by a tough organic or organic-mineral cuticle which functions as an exoskeleton. In order to grow, arthropods must molt their exoskeleton. At least half of the described species of living animals are arthropods (mostly insects), but arthropods are less common as fossils. The most familiar group of fossil arthropods is undoubtedly the trilobites. Fossil groups have been incorporated into arthropod classification systems at least since the 18th century, but important new finds - especially of very early stem group organisms, such as those of the

Invertebrate animal, having a segmented body covered by a jointed exoskeleton with paired jointed appendages; member of the phylum Arthropoda, the largest and most diverse invertebrate phylum. The exoskeleton is periodically shed (molted) to permit growth and METAMORPHOSIS. Arthropods make up more than 80% (800,000) of all known animal species; they include TRILOBITES, HORSESHOE CRABS, ARACHNIDS, SEA SPIDERS, CRUSTACEANS, INSECTS, CENTIPEDES, and MILLIPEDES.

    Metamerism as the result of teloblastic growth. Tendency towards regional body specialization. Chitinous cuticle forming exoskeleton with sclerites (tergites, pleurites, and sternites). Growth by ecdysis. Each body segment primitively with 1 pair of jointed appendages. Generally 1 pair of lateral, compound eyes, and one to several median eyes. Scizocoelom reduced to portions of excretory and reproductive systems. Main body cavity an open hemocoel. Dorsal heart with lateral ostia. Complete gut. Nervous system comparable to annelids. Striated muscle arranged in segmental bands. Most gonochoristic. Direct, indirect, and mixed development. Subphylum Chelicerata
    Body divided into cephalothorax (prosoma) and abdomen (opisthosoma). Antennae absent. Generally 8 pairs of appendages. First pair of appendages modified as chelicerae. Second pair of appendages modified as pedipalps. Class Merostomata
    5 or 6 pairs of abdominal appendages modified as gills. Posterior telson.
