Up Protozoa Porifera Coelenterata ... Annelida [ Arthropoda ] Chordata Arthropoda The arthropods are by far the most successful animal phylum, both in variety of habitats and in numbers of species and individuals, including such familiar creatures as crabs, spiders and insects in general. They've successfully adapted to life in water, on land and in the air. About 80% of all known animal species are arthropods - about 800,000 species of them have been described and recent estimates put the total number of species in the phylum as roughly 6 million. Arthropods are found in a greater variety of habitats than any other animal group; on top of mountains, at great depths in the ocean, in the icy wilderness of Antarctica and climbing up the overflow pipe of your bath. They can survive great extremes of temperature, toxicity, acidity and salinity. They have a segmented body covered by a jointed external skeleton (exoskeleton), with paired jointed appendages on each segment. Because the jointed exoskeleton can't grow, it has be shed regularly as the arthropod grows. This phenomenon, called moulting, or ecdysis , is very useful to the creature; it can grow rapidly and change its form until the new skin hardens. Though of course it is also much more vulnerable to predators until it has its armour back. Arthropods can go through many different forms in their life cycles, such as caterpillar to butterfly.

PHYLUM ARTHROPODA PLEASE REFER TO THE ANIMAL CHARACTERISTICS TABLE I. The most abundant and diverse animal phylum (more available niches for small animals). 80% of all animal species are arthropods. Arthropoda means "jointed foot" but humans also have jointed appendages. Most arthropods are insects and most insects are BEETLES. GO TO a selection from "An Inordinate Fondness for Beetles" by Evans and Bellamy.
    A. Many arthropod species are in direct competition with man for food (e.g. African locusts). Millions of dollars are spent each year on pesticides to produce food. B. Some arthropods like mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, lice are vectors of important human and livestock diseases. GO TO Introduction to the Arthropoda GO TO Arthropods
II. Reasons for Arthropod Success A. the exoskeleton (like a medieval knight's suit of armor; made of chitin,
complex carbohydrate; limits size - no fleas as big as dogs). 1. protects against predators.
    2. prevents water loss (small animals have a high surface to volume ratio).
    3. provides structural support (muscles attach to the inside).

The Phylum Arthropoda contains the Insects, Spiders, Scorpions, Harvestmen, Ticks and Mites, and the Crustaceans , which include the Barnacles Isopods and Decapod Crabs In this LOARS Web Resource we are only concerned with the Arthropods which are found between the tides on rocky ocean shores. One of the major classes within the Crustacean group is the Malacostracans . This group contains the lobsters, crabs and prawns. See the diagram above for the Malacostracan body parts. Arthropods are a massive group of animals and have many more varieties, or species, than all the other groups combined. It is believed that 75% of all animals are Arthropods. The name arthropod is made up from " arthro " meaning joint, and " pod " meaning leg. Arthropod legs are highly adapted for walking, swimming, feeding and gathering sensory information. Some arthropods, such as

Arthropoda Gallery Bosmina - a small (~0.5mm) zooplankton. It feeds on small algae by filtering around 0.5 ml of water per day. Daphnia - a large (~2.5mm) zooplankton. A filter feeder, Daphnia feed on small algae up to ~100µm in size. Depending on the species, Daphnia can filter from 3-6 ml of water per day. NOTE: 3 embryos in the brood pouch. Read a fascinating article about Daphnia dispersal and diapause at: article Calanoid copepod - a large, (2.5 mm) zooplankton. Note more tapered head, single eye, and 2nd antennae that extend to beyond the body. Cyclopoid copepod - a large, (2.5 mm) zooplankton. Note blunt head, single eye, and 2nd antennae that extend only to mid-thorax Nauplius - a developmental stage of Copepods. This specimen is likely a mid-stage of a Calanoid copepod. Ostracod - are oldest known microfauna (Cambrian); chitinous exoskeleton; littoral benthic habitat; require 7.3-9.5 mg/L dissolved oxygen. Back to E455 Homepage
