Welcome to Astrobiology at the University of Washington Astrobiology, the study of life in the Universe, both terrestrial and extraterrestrial, has recently become established as an exciting scientific field. The University of Washington's new graduate certificate program in Astrobiology, one of the first in the world, enables students to obtain the interdepartmental background needed for careers in this field. Faculty and students focus on Earth's extreme microbial environments (hydrothermal vents, polar sea ice, abyssal microbial communities, and subterranean chemo-autotrophic systems). These extreme ecosystems, inhabited by bacteria and archaea, can serve as analogs and models for the development of extraterrestrial life. Researchers also study extraterrestrial sites and develop engineering techniques for missions to search for living or fossil microbes on other solar system bodies.
This program is made possible by major funding from the National Science Foundation.

4. Welcome To The NASA Astrobiology Institute
A partnership between NASA and other research organizations to conduct and lead integrated multidisciplinary research in astrobiology, the study of life in the universe.
http://nai.arc.nasa.gov/
How does life begin and evolve? Is there life elsewhere in the Universe? What is the future of life on Earth and beyond? NAI carries out collaborative research and education in astrobiology, the interdisciplinary science that seeks answers to these fundamental questions. It supports investigation of these issues on Earth and serves as a portal to space for the scientific community. Astrobiology Features
Solar Influence, Part II: Effects on and near Earth

In Solar Influence Part I, we looked at current and upcoming solar missions and how they are helping us to understand our Sun. In this installment, we will look at how changes in solar output can affect our technology and space missions.
Solar Influence, Part I: Understanding our Sun

The Sun is a wondrous beacon. It is the primary energy source that drives so many Earth systems. But how much do scientists know about its energy output and the variance of this output? Research into this area has tangible ramifications for life on Earth.
Featured Question: A few thoughts on Mass Extinctions

These questions were submitted to our Ask An Astrobiologist website recently, and we've added images and video to this comprehensive answer.

Introduction
Astrobiology and the Roadmap This NASA Astrobiology Roadmap outlines these multiple pathways for research and exploration and indicates how they might be prioritized and coordinated. The roadmap embodies the efforts of more than 200 scientists and technologists, including NASA employees, academic scientists whose research is partially funded by NASA grants, and many members of the broader community who have no formal association with NASA. Fundamental Questions Astrobiology addresses three basic questions that have been asked in various ways for generations.
  • How does life begin and evolve?
Does life exist elsewhere in the universe?
What is the future of life on Earth and beyond?
Principles The following basic principles are fundamental to the astrobiology program:
  • Astrobiology is multidisciplinary in its content and interdisciplinary in its execution. Its success depends critically upon the close coordination of diverse scientific disciplines and programs, including space missions.

  • Dave Thomas and Julian Hiscox founded Marsbugs in the Spring of 1994. Originally called Marsbugs: The Electronic Exobiology Newsletter , this newsletter provides a channel of information for scientists, educators and other persons interested in life sciences as they relate to planetary science and space exploration. This newsletter is not intended to replace peer-reviewed journals, but to supplement them. We, the editors, envision Marsbugs as a medium in which people can informally present ideas for investigation, questions about space biology, and announcements of upcoming events. Astrobiology is still a relatively young field, and new ideas may come out of the most unexpected places. Subjects may include, but are not limited to: exobiology and astrobiology (life on other planets), the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), ecopoeisis and terraformation, Earth from space, planetary biology, primordial evolution, space physiology, biological life support systems, and human habitation of space and other planets. Marsbugs is published on a weekly to quarterly basis as warranted by the number of articles and announcements. Article submissions are welcome, and should be submitted to either of the two

"Despite the enveloping nebula of uncertainties, extraterrestrial life has become an increasingly exciting area of scientific inquiry. The field is called exobiology or astrobiology—every few years it seems as though the name has been changed to protect the ignorant."
    Joel Achenbach
National Geographic Astrobiology (often used synonymously with exobiology) is defined in different ways by different people, but it includes the study of the evolution of life, the chemistry that leads to the formation of life, and the possibility that life has evolved or may evolve on other planets. Two places in particular are of interest: Mars and Europa (one of Jupiter's moons). Both of these "planets" have environments that may have once supported life or may even presently support life in places we cannot see. And if life has evolved on other worlds, did it also evolve intelligence?

Is there life elsewhere in the universe? What is life's future on Earth and beyond? How did life originate on the Earth? These are just a small sampling of questions asked by Astrobiologists. TERC and NASA are developing an interdisciplinary year-long course for middle and high school students using astrobiology as its unifying, underlying structure. Through a series of inquiry-based activities centered on the search for life on other planets, students will explore diverse concepts in chemistry, biology, physics, Earth and space science, and engineering. Astrobiology provides students opportunities to master fundamental science concepts in a relevant context and apply their skill and understanding directly in a variety of investigative modes. The curriculum will be available spring of 2004. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation . Opinions expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the Foundation. Additional funding provided by the NASA Astrobiology Program, based at NASA Ames Research Center.

Wecome to the Cardiff Centre for Astrobiology (CCAB) website.
Astrobiology has emerged as a new science for the new millennium. It seeks to understand life in the context of the wider cosmos. The new Centre will continue in the pioneering traditions of astrobiology started in Cardiff over 25 years ago, taking note of the many relevant discoveries that have been made in recent years. The Centre aims to combine the expertise of astronomers, biochemists and microbiologists to generate cutting edge science that would eventually enable us to answer the age-old question: where did we come from?
