The goal of the outreach will be to enhance the educational and intellectual environment in astrobiology and to bring the results of our research program back to the citizenry as a whole.

Environmental Genomes and the Evolution of Complex Systems in Simple Organisms Astrobiology at the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution seeks an understanding about the genotypic/phenotypic evolution of early life forms and how changing environments contributed to the development of complex systems in simple organisms. From this understanding, we will be better prepared for future discoveries about extraterrestrial life that might come from sample return missions or exploration of other planets. The multifaceted projects in the Woods Hole Astrobiology Program are united by common scientific interests and resource requirements for studies of molecular evolution.
Just as astronomers with powerful telescopes can see very distant events that happened close to the birth of the universe, so biologists who analyze genomes can hope to infer events that date from the earliest moments in the evolution of life

The scientific search for extraterrestrial life forms has been bolstered by two recent discoveries. First, the discovery of life forms in exotic environments on Earth indicates that life is very hearty and can adapt to the strangest and most hostile environments. Second, astronomers found planets orbiting stars besides our sun over 50 extrasolar planets have been discovered as of 2001. Are there alien life forms on any of these planets? If alien life does exist, what might it be like? Would it be simple forms of life such as bacteria, viruses or algae, or more advanced, multi-cellular creatures, perhaps even intelligent beings? Would aliens be animals, plants or have characteristics of both? Would they have arms and legs and walk upright as we do? Would they depend upon vision as their primary sense or use another way to gather information about their surroundings? Would they "breathe" oxygen or some other gas?

One answer is simply that genes are fossils. In many cases, genes are extraordinarily ancient in origin and contain information about past events and environments on this planet. There are many examples of this, from the "Snowball Earth" episodes in the Proterozoic triggering evolution of the Superoxide dismutase, to bursts of True Polar Wander during the Cambrian Evolutionary Explosion . A second answer is that understanding how extant organisms function at the molecular genetic level will better enable us to interpret past, present and even extraterrestrial biogeochemical signatures. Though exploring the molecular evolution of organisms and their organic and inorganic products, research in the Geobiology program at Caltech will interrogate the history of life on earth as well as the role the biota continue to play in shaping modern environments.

The Astrobiology and Space Research Directorate at Ames Research Center conducts research, develops products, and serves the space community in astrobiology and related areas of earth, space, and life science. Most of the Research and project work in this Directorate is related to astrobiology the study of life in the universe. The Directorate consists of about 800 staff members, approximately 260 civil servants and the rest contractors, research colleagues, and students. The work done in the directorate supports, and is funded by all of the NASA Enterprises. NASA funds permafrost study
to support astrobiology research
May 27, 1999: NASA and Russian scientists have been selected to take the search for life in the solar system to the frozen reaches of Earth. Richard Hoover of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and Prof. Elena A. Vorobyova of Moscow State University will investigate the microbiota found in the permafrost and ice of Siberia, Alaska, and Antarctica. NASA's Office of Space Science has announced that their proposal, Permafrost as Microbial Habitat - in-situ Investigation , was one of 18 chosen from 123 proposals submitted for funding under the Joint U.S./Russian Research in Space Science (JURRISS) Program. Right: Hoover displays growing moss that remained alive yet dormant while frozen for 40,000 years in the permafrost of the Kolyma Lowlands of northeastern Siberia. The sample was provided by David A. Gilichinsky and Elena A. Vorobyova of the Institute of Soil Science and Photosynthesis, Russian Academy of Sciences. Links to 1800x1204-pixel, 483K JPG

ASTROBIOLOGY COURSE OVERVIEW
Astrobiology provides a fertile domain for students to struggle with fundamental questions of scientific knowledge. Students will learn that scientific knowledge is not a set of accumulated facts, but is a dynamic and, at times, confusing and amorphous set of current speculations. Students will observe and experience how this knowledge base evolves through the addition of new data and the emergence of new means of understanding the data. They will learn about, explore and participate in the real processes of science research and discovery, including modeling, setting up experiments, testing hypotheses, making systematic field observations, and doing image and data analysis. Research activities such as WebQuests and long-term, independent experiments will enable students to DO rather than TAKE astrobiology.
