Baeyer, (Johann Friedrich Wilhelm) Adolf von
Baeyer, (Johann Friedrich Wilhelm) Adolf von (1835-1917), German chemist and Nobel laureate, who first synthesized the dye indigo, which previously could be obtained only from certain species of the indigo plant. Von Baeyer was born in Berlin. He studied chemistry under the German chemists Robert Bunsen and Friedrich Kekulé von Stradonitz. Von Baeyer subsequently did graduate work at the University of Berlin, and became Professor of Chemistry at the University of Munich in 1875. In the early 1880s he synthesized indigo and determined the dye's molecular structure. For his work with indigo von Baeyer received the Davy Medal of the Royal Society in 1881 and the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1905. His other achievements include synthesizing uric acid, work done in cooperation with with the German chemist Emil Fischer. His theoretical research covered almost the entire field of organic chemistry. Back

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Adolf Von Baeyer The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1905 Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Adolf von Baeyer was born on October 31, 1835, in Berlin, as the son of Johann Jakob Baeyer and Eugenie nee Hitzig. His father, a lieutenant-general, was the originator of the European system of geodetic measurement. Even as a child Baeyer was interested in chemical experiments and at the age of twelve found a new double salt of copper. Bayer devoted his first two years as a student at the University of Berlin (1853-1855) chiefly to Physics and Mathematics. For the next year or two Baeyer was working with Kekule who had meanwhile become Professor at Ghent. A study of barbituric acid, provided the thesis by which qualified as a university teacher in 1860. It was during the Berlin period that Baeyer began most of the work that was to bring him fame later. In 1865 he started his work on indigo- the blue dye had fascinated him since his youth-and this soon led to the discovery of indole and to the partial synthesis of indigo tin. Honors were heaped upon him, including the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1905. On his fiftieth birthday he was raised to the hereditary nobility. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1905 " in recognition of his services in the advancement of organic chemistry and the chemical industry, through his work on organic dyes and hydro aromatic compounds."

    http://inst.augie.edu/~gjhonsbr/CHEMISTS.htm
The Development of the History of Chemistry: Lavoisier and Baeyer The significant developments in the history of chemistry can be credited to the chemical genealogy itself. Anyone who has ever been a chemist has contributed, in some way, to the development of chemistry as a whole. Two significant intellectual descendants who were big contributors in chemistry are Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier and Adolf Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Ritter von Baeyer. By taking a look at these two chemists, it is clear how times have changed and how the chemical genealogy has played such an important role in the development of chemistry. Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier was born on August 26, 1743, in Paris. Lavoisier is considered by many, to be the father of modern chemistry. After his elementary education, Lavoisier attended the College Mazarin to study law, in accordance with his families wishes. He received his licentiate in 1764 but soon realized that his true passion was for the sciences. Most of his early scientific work was conducted as a geologist while he assisted in preparing the first mineralogical atlas of France. In 1768, Lavoisier was elected to be in the Academy of Sciences. Lavoisier was elected into this elite society at the young age of twenty-five. While he was a member of this society, one of his goals was to raise more money so he could better support his research. In doing so, he joined the taxation committee for the Crown on a profit-and-loss basis. Many of his colleagues did not like Lavoisier's decision to join this taxation committee, but it did allow him to continue his experiments.
