The Bats at Congress Ave. Bridge
A Little History . . .

W hen engineers reconstructed downtown Austin's Congress Avenue Bridge in 1980, they had no idea that new crevices beneath the bridge would make an ideal bat roost. Although bats had lived there for years, it was headline news when they suddenly began moving in by the thousands. Reacting in fear, many people petitioned to have the bat colony eradicated. About that time, Bat Conservation International (BCI) stepped in and told Austinites the surprising truth: that bats are gentle and incredibly sophisticated animals, that bat-watchers have nothing to fear if they don't try to handle bats, and that on the nightly flights out from under the bridge, the Austin bats eat from 10,000 to 30,000 pounds of insects, including agricultural pests. As the city came to appreciate its bats, the population under the Congress Avenue Bridge grew to be the largest urban bat colony in North America. With up to 1.5 million bats spiralling into the summer skies, Austin now has one of the most unusual and fascinating tourist attractions anywhere.

Bats After skimming this site, your knowledge on bats will put you in the top 1/10th percent of the world's population. Won't you be clever? Natural History Bats and Motherhood Conservation Bats Worldwide ... Last Words NATURAL HISTORY Most bats are devoted mates and can barely stand separation from one another. Of course with almost one thousand species existing worldwide, as with human preferences, bats' mating behavior run the gamut of possibilities. When bats migrate, they climb to more than 10,000 feet to cruise. Of the 155 species of mammals in Belize, 85 of them are bats, an amazing 55%. Bats are the only true flying mammal and are unquestioned champions of aeronautics. Bats are our own distant relative. The bones of a bat's wings are essentially the same design as those in human arms and hands, having a thumb and four fingers. The brains of flying foxes have more in common with primates than they do with rodents. Bats can hibernate at will. If there is a food shortage due to weather changes, bats can shut down their metabolism and sleep until better times. When a hibernating bat is disturbed, its body temperature rises in preparation for escape and thereby costs from 10 to 30 days of stored fat reserve. Where bats hang isn't random. Each has has own berth on the wall and they roost near a cave entrance or on a particularly warm pocket of the ceiling. They are extremely loyal to their caves of birth and hibernation. To them it is nothing less than "Home Sweet Home."

Bats may be the most misunderstood animals in the United States, although as consumers of enormous numbers of insects, they rank among the most beneficial. Almost all United States bats, and 70 percent of the bat species worldwide, feed almost exclusively on insects and are thus extremely beneficial. In fact, bats are the only major predators of night-flying insects. One bat can eat between 600 and 1,000 mosquitoes and other insect pests in just one hour (Organization for Bat Conservation) While most United States bat species are insectivorous, bats in other parts of the world feed on a variety of items in addition to insects. Many species feed primarily on fruit, while several types feed on nectar and pollen. Fruit bats perform an extremely important function as seed dispersers. Nectar eating bats, including the federally-listed endangered

What is rabies and how do people get it
Rabies is an infectious viral disease that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. People get rabies from the bite of an animal with rabies (a rabid animal). Any wild mammal, like a raccoon, skunk, fox, coyote, or bat, can have rabies and transmit it to people. It is also possible, but quite rare, that people may get rabies if infectious material from a rabid animal, such as saliva, gets directly into their eyes, nose, mouth, or a wound. Because rabies is a fatal disease, the goal of public health is, first, to prevent human exposure to rabies by education and, second, to prevent the disease by anti-rabies treatment if exposure occurs. Tens of thousands of people are successfully treated each year after being bitten by an animal that may have rabies. A few people die of rabies each year in the United States, usually because they do not recognize the risk of rabies from the bite of a wild animal and do not seek medical advice.
