"Bats" Bats is a science inquiry unit created by Ms. Delancy and the 1997/98 Avocado Elementary's kindergarten/first grade magnet class. It is geared for primary children who have a lot of motivation but short attention spans. This project explored the students' senses as they got to see "real live bats", hear the echolocation sounds of bats via the internet, and feel sound waves generated by self-made sound conductors. These conductors helped the students' to understand how bats use sound vibrations for navigation and finding food. As a special treat, the students got to smell and taste various fruits that Fruit Bats love to eat and make their own bat cookies. We all had a lot of fun and were very excited about learning. UNC Assistive Technology
Motivation
Spatial information is often presented in the form of maps that viewers actively explore to learn about an area. Blind users cannot share the benefits of such a visual representation, and have traditionally relied on audio descriptions, crude tactile maps, guidance from the sighted, or even trial and error in learning the layout of a region. While on-going assistive technology research has yielded a number of promising techniques to help the visually impaired plan daily walks and get directions, little has been done to promote the same kind of spatial awareness provided by maps to the sighted. Moreover, few pieces of software in this domain have ventured out of the lab and into the hands of the general public. The Blind Audio Tactile mapping System (BATS) strives to reverse these two trends by creating a freely available, universally accessible, spatial data exploration tool.
History
BATS England Prototype
The BATS England prototype augments a digital map of ancient England with a number accessibility features to support exploration by a blind user. Text-to-speech synthesis delivers information from user queries into spatial data including location names, location types, and elevations to name a few. Spatial sounds provide a context for user exploration by playing audio cues in the corresponding directions and distances from the users current cursor location on the map. Searching for specific locations and calculating relational distances between two points of interest are also made easy by the software.

What's so bad about BATS?
By Sue Chastain
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Want to talk about a creature with an image problem? Consider the poor bat We all know about the creepy little rodents. They're dirty and vicious. They'll suck your blood, given half a chance, or get tangled up in your hair. They're blind, and prime carriers of rabies. Want to pinpoint the absolute nadir of bats', uh, popularity? Ask Merlin Tuttle - founder and executive director of Bat Conservation International (BCI) and considered by many to be the country's foremost authority on the furry mammals - and he's ready. "National magazines were running stories in the late '70s and early '80s with headlines like `Three Years of Terror' and `The Nightmare House.' A story in Austin, Texas, was headlined `Bat Colonies Sink Teeth Into City.' That had to be the worst." But look around now, and you'd have to be blind as a...well, pretty unobservant to miss the fact that bats are not only gaining respectability, the country is virtually going batty.
  • A recent exhibit at the Franklin Institute, "Masters of the Night: The True Story of Bats," drew 200,000 people, making it one of the most popular events there ever.

Hello!
Welcome to my WebPage.
This is my personal page.
I initially created this page to help educated people about bats.
I've been an avid photographer for years. I then learned how to use paint Shop Pro. I created all of the graphics on these pages. I found that I enjoy working with graphic files, especially my own photography. I found that I
could display my photos of bats in the San Antonio area. There are lots of them here.
They help us more than most of us know. Bats really are our friends. Without them this
city would be over-run with insects. Most bats are NOT rabid, but if you
see one on the ground, leave it alone! It's best to play it safe. Nature photos have been a favorite of mine since I began using a 35MM camera. Flower
photos using a macro lens is one of my favorite subjects. Scenery in Colorado, or taking photos of people in natural settings. I've always wanted to try news photography. PLEASE Sign My Guestbook View My Guestbook I write articles for Suite101.com.

The Rafter Bats are a six-piece band based in Southern Connecticut. Using the traditional sounds of bluegrass as a foundation, they draw on their diverse musical backgrounds to create a truly unique sound of their own. Whether playing to a crowd of thousands or to a small intimate gathering, they have the ability to get people on their feet dancing or leave them crying in their beer. It's virtually impossible not to tap your foot or sing along while the guys are on stage. The Rafter Bats play both electric and acoustic instruments, including mandolin, dobro, banjo, guitar, fiddle, bass and drums. The Rafter Bats repertoire consists of original material, traditional favorites, and well-known covers.

The Bats ^v^ Bats Links ^v^ About Melissa ^v^ Key to Bats of AZ If you look up in the sky in the early evening, you may see many birds. If you look closely at these birds you will notice that many are not birds at all. They are actually bats! Did you know that there are 986 different species of bats in the world, all of which fly. Bats are mammals and belong to the Order Chiroptera (meaning hand-wing ). They have elongated fingers that stretch skin into "wings". As with other types of mammals, some bats are carnivorous (meat-eating), piscivorous (fish-eating), saguivorous (blood-eating), fruigivorous (fruit-eating), nectarivourous (nectar or pollen eating), but most of them are insectivorous (insect-eating) Bats are quite common in most places in the world and Arizona is no exception. Although little is know about these creatures of the night we do know that Arizona hosts some 27 different species of bats. Below are some of the interesting tidbits of information regarding Arizona bats. Much of this information has been gleaned from Bats of Arizona, a special Heritage Edition of the Arizona Wildlife Views (August 1993) and from "America's Neighorhood Bats" by Merlin Tuttle (1988).
Leaf-nosed Bats These bats are of the Family Phyllostomidae , or American leaf-nosed bats. These are all rather large bats, and are found primarily in the southern part of Arizona.
