Several views of the upper canine and occlusal views of three upper molars of an unnamed new genus and species of Vespertilionidae Bats comprise the second largest order of living mammals and are the only mammals that fly. Their ecological roles are diverse and their contributions to community structure can be substantial, but their diversity and relationships are not well understood, in part, because of their poor fossil record. Fossils of bats of Tertiary age are particularly rare in North America, but are also rare on most other continents. Recently, thousands of fossils of small vertebrates have been collected from a series of 14 localities in Florida distributed across most of the latter half of the Tertiary period, spanning approximately 27 million years from late Oligocene to late Pliocene. The fossils originate from sinkhole deposits that are unusually rich in bat specimens. In a few of the sites, hundreds of specimens are available, making these by far the richest localities for fossil bats found to date from the Tertiary period in North America.

Holy Bat Box Batman!
it's The Buzbee Bat House Temperature Plot !
Do I have too much time on my hands or what ? I didn't think so, but how then do I explain this ? It began one evening in Egypt several years ago. I was crossing the Nile on a small sailboat and was fascinated by the sight of bats skimming the surface of the river, snatching up the insects . Upon returning home to Denver, I thought it might be interesting to put up a bat house to see if I could attract any bats. After a couple of months of trying to convince my wife , she relented ( and actually bought me a book on bats ). So my Son and I built and erected the bat house. Now after two years of waiting, ( much to my wife's relief and my daughter 's dismay ) no bats. So I read up on the known habits of bats and made a few changes. I moved the house a bit, and caulked and painted it. It turns out that one of the most important factors for a bat when selecting a place to roost, is the temperature. So I decided to see what was happening inside, and share this important information with the world. Thus this page. The most current temperature is on the right and is sampled every half hour. The image represents a span of approximately 5 days.

bats, page 1, Megabats seem to be slow. But their long narrow wings make themgood travelers at night. bats Today. bats live in barns, attics, and caves.
http://wings.avkids.com/Book/Animals/intermediate/bats-01.html
Bats page 1 Introduction A bat looks somewhat like a mouse. At one time they were called a "flittermouse". This was because they were thought of as a flying mouse. Others thought of the mouse as a bird. bat The bat is more closely related to primates. Bats can fly like a bird. But, they do not have feathers, build nests, or lay eggs. Bats are mammals. Their bodies are covered with fur. They are born live and not hatched from an egg. There are almost 1,000 species of bats. They are different in size, color, body features, habitat and diet. They live in nearly every part of the world. The most unusual ones live in South and Central America. The most numbers are found in Africa. Flight Bats are fantastic fliers. They are able to truly fly. Bats are the only mammals able to have powered flight. A bat's body is made for flight. The neck is short, the chest is large and the stomach is narrow. In order to fly a body must have a wide, thin surface. It also needs the power to push through the air. This thin surface we call an airfoil in flight terms. The power to push we call propulsion. In a bat it is the wings that are both.

Bats are nocturnal; they are most active at night and sleep during the day hanging upside-down. They are found in all types of habitats all around the world except at the poles. There are over 900 different species of bats. The smallest bat is the bumblebee bat (with a wingspan of 6 inches=15 cm, weighing less than a penny); the biggest bat is the flying fox bat (with a wingspan of 6 feet=1.8 m, weighing 2 pounds=1 kg). During the cold winter, some bats migrate to a warmer area. Some bats (like the brown bat) hibernate during the cold of winter, sleeping very deeply until warm weather arrives. Classification : Bats belong to the class Mammalia (mammals) and the order Chiroptera (bats). There are two types of bats that differ in their diet and in the way they sense and obtain food. Bats are divided into:

Endangered Species How wildlife regulations are made Fun Facts about Bats
    • Texas is the battiest state in the union 32 of the 42 species of U.S. bats call Texas home at one time or another. Hefty eaters, some bats gobble up as many as 600 mosquitoes in just one hour. Bats could help us kick the pesticide habit. A typical insectivorous bat menu might include moths, mosquitoes, crickets, even scorpions. And yes, there are "vegetarians" nectarivourous bats who pollinate agaves from which tequila is made. Many of our favorite fruits and veggies depend in some way on bats including bananas, avocados, mangos, peaches, cashews and guavas. Fruit-eating and nectar sipping bats are important pollinators and seed dispersers of an array of useful plants.
During the day, Greater Long-nosed Bats roost in caves in large groups called colonies. Strong fliers that can hover like hummingbirds, these bats come out at night to feed on the nectar and pollen in flowers of desert plants such as agaves. With long noses and tongues, they are well-adapted for nectar-feeding. They also help the agave plants reproduce by spreading pollen. The bats migrate between Big Bend and southern Mexico following the bloom periods of food plants.
