Paul Berg
, when cornered into summing up his furniture style, is unequivocal; "I don't make furniture. I don't even like furniture. I make things". Paul is wary of tags and feels saddened that aesthetics have been, "hijacked by technicians". His creations are a perfect fusion of energy between man and material. A plank of wood decides its own fate, as it becomes what it suggests. Paul's workshop is a resting place for uprights that insist on being legs and panels that are patently cupboard doors.
The "things" that emerge from the depths of Berg's imagination are triumphantly playful and idiosyncratic. We offer his "Extinct Birds of the Shannon Estuary" coat rack, a wonderful example of a "thing" that just happens to do a job, although if it never saw a coat, it would be worth a place in anyone's home!

Friedrich Paul Berg
BACKGROUND
Friedrich Berg was born in 1943, the son of German immigrants. He was educated in the United States and holds a degree in Mining Engineering from Columbia University. His professional engineering work has been primarily as a mechanical engineer. He has served as an Environmental Affairs Representative. In that capacity he was recognized as an expert for environmental concerns including air pollution. In April of 1978, Friedrich Berg first took a public stand regarding his views on the Holocaust story when he led a demonstration against the National Broadcasting Company for its showing of the TV miniseries, "Holocaust." In the years that followed Berg became known for the numerous articles which he wrote including the standard revisionist text on the absurdity of the diesel gas - mass murder story, "Diesel Gas Chambers: Myth within a Myth." Berg summed up his views on the diesel gas story to this author as follows: Friedrich Berg is one of the Holocaust-revisionist pioneers. His works on various technical topics related to the Holocaust story have been published by various journals around the world. He has also addressed numerous audiences on these topics and has had his ideas broadcast on radio and television.

To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing in regard to the case of Leonard Peltier. As a BIA employee who served with the Federal Marshals and FBI during the siege of Wounded Knee in 1973, I was in a position to observe events, which led up to the tragic deaths of Williams, Coler and Stuntz.
Prior to coming to the Pine Ridge Reservation I had served in the Vietnam War with Naval Intelligence. I was part of a team charged with locating bunkers, artillery positions and staging areas around Khe Sahn. My military experience provided me with limited, but useful familiarity with siege operations. After I was discharged from the Navy, I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. I was a teacher on the Pine Ridge Reservation from 1971 to 1976 and had a unique opportunity to observe the tribulations first hand. Since leaving the Reservation, I have lived and worked in Alaska as a bush village teacher, an education specialist for the Alaska Department of Education and as a faculty member for the University of Alaska. In 1991, I was under contract by the U.S. Department of Education to write a paper for the Indian Nations at Risk Task Force meeting at the White House. The U.S. Department of Education graciously referred to me in its literature as a "national expert" in this field. I have also written a number of articles and co-authored several books in the field of education technology. At the present time I am the owner and headmaster of Thunder Mountain Academy, a private middle school in Juneau, Alaska.

Berg, in , combined DNA from the cancer-causing monkey virus SV40 with that of the virus lambda to create the first recombinant DNA molecules. However, upon realizing the dangers of his experiment, terminated it before it could be taken any further. He immediately, in what is now called the "Berg Letter," proposed a one year moratorium on recombinant DNA research, in order for safety concerns to be worked out. Berg later continued his recombinant DNA research, and was awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in chemistry. In 1991, Berg accepted a position as the head of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the

Paul Berg, Director

Stanford University
"It will become one of the classics"
"The textbook Exploring Genetic Mechanisms is an excellent account of the hallmarks of modern genetic analysis...[It] takes its readers through a detailed account of many fundamental principles of molecular genetics. It provides specific examples of well-characterized genetic mechanisms that operate within a gene family as well as examples of more complex genetic relations that operate within an entire organism. This book represents the next generation of modern genetics textbooks and will be invaluable for genetics researchers and students."
The New England Journal of Medicine "In their earlier volumes, Singer & Berg have laid out the fundamentals of modern molecular biology. Here, with a group of the finest co-authors, they focus on the individual stories that make biology such a rich and varied science. The genes come alive as individual pieces of the biological tapestry. Viral genes, hemoglobin genes, genes for antibodies, genes of plants oncogenes and many more are probed along with the methodologies used to investigate them. A great volume from which to learn or teach about how actual life emerges from the four bases that make up DNA."
David Baltimore, President-Elect California Institute of Technology
