4. Biodiversity
Access to WWW sites that provide information on genetic diversity, species diversity, ecological diversity, and geopolitical perspectives. From the National Biological Information Infrastructure.
Biodiversity or biological diversity is the sum total of the variety of life and its interactions and can be subdivided into 1) Genetic Diversity 2) Species Diversity, and 3) Ecological or Ecosystem Diversity.
Genetic Diversity
This section of the NBII lists many of the most important National and International website links that give the user fast comprehensive access to information and data on the genetic diversity of the biosphere.
Species Diversity
All Biota Viruses Protists ... Animals
This section of the NBII gives the visitor a taste of the tremendous variability of life, linking to selected WWW sites that emphasize brief descriptions and images of the wide assortment of life to be discovered within the biosphere.
Ecological or Ecosystem Diversity
This section of the NBII gives links to numerous websites that characterize and give examples of the diversity of ecosystems and the everpresent diversity of biotic and abiotic relationships inherent in our biosphere.
Geopolitical Perspectives
This section of the NBII provides links to numerous sites, both U.S. and International, that give a geographic or political unit focus to biological diversity. These links include websites with biodiversity information at International, Regional, State and Local scales.

Implementatie Europees Milieubeleid

9. WWF: Virtual House
Interactive site by World Wildlife Fund teaches users about global environmental issues. Find the household objects that answer the biodiversity questions.
This virtual house is a lot like any other residence you'll findfrom Alaska to Ohio to Florida. And inside are all kinds of things we use in our everyday lives. So take a look around and see what you can learn about how the way we live can affect our planet's biodiversity Just choose one of the categories above, hit "Enter House," and you'll be asked a question. Find the answer as you nose around the house clicking on items until you find the one that answers the question. Or, if you'd rather learn about one of the topics in more detail, hit "Click here to learn more about your topic" and go directly to that section of the WWF site. Wipe your feet at the door, hang your coat in the closet, and come on in . . .

From Species in a Bucket by Edwin Philip Pister. Natural History , January 1993.
It is important to be able to clearly define the reasons for believing in conservation of biodiversity, if we are to justify it in the face of increasing threats to species survival. One way to identify the reasons is to look at what we derive from biological diversity, and what we will lose as a result of species extinction.
Food Supplies
Animals. Only a couple of dozen animal species have been domesticated for food production. Virtually 100% of the protein from domesticated animals consumed by people comes from nine species: cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, water buffalo, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. Fish are becoming a new kind of domesticated animal through the development of aquaculture techniques.

IMPLICATIONS FOR SMALL-SCALE FOOD PRODUCERS IN KENYA INTRODUCTION [Return to Contents] In Kenya, as in most of the rest of the developing world, the indigenous genetic resources of poor communities are being lost, because of the spread of industrial agriculture and the consequent marginalisation of small-scale food production, and they are being stolen by corporate-sponsored scientists and other plant collectors - the Biopirates - without adequate compensation. PRIOR INFORMED CONSENT 'Prior Informed Consent' means that when someone from within or outside of the community wants to use the community's genetic resources, for whatever purpose, they should explain exactly what they are going to use them for, who the ultimate enduser will be, and agree, in a legally-binding way, how any benefits, from the further commercial development of these resources, will be shared with the community. In order for communities to be able to negotiate effectively, make reasonable assessments of the implications of any information they are given and be able to claim adequate compensation for their genetic materials, there needs to be an agreed framework supported by appropriate legislation at national level. MEASURING biodiversity VALUE Measures biodiversity value in theory identifyinga fundamental currency of value to people. biodiversity
MEASURING BIODIVERSITY VALUE Measures of biodiversity are needed to determine the 'where' of in situ conservation action rather than the 'how', particularly in deciding which combinations of available areas could represent and help sustain the most biodiversity value for the future. This raises many questions, including: A note on grids and data Diversity is a property of sets of organisms. These sets are usually defined by the volume of space in which they occur, although for many studies the third dimension can be ignored, so that sets can be defined by an area of land or sea. We follow a popular approach of dividing the surface area of the world into grid cells or polygons. For purposes other than choosing among land-management units for conservation, equal-area (
