The Biodiversity Project works to make people aware of the importance of biodiversity and to build their commitment to saving it. Our task is to engage and empower people to act by making the connection between biodiversity and people's daily lives and basic values. The Biodiversity Project meets this challenge by developing communications strategies that motivate people to protect biodiversity.

The number of species of plants, animals, micro organisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth. Appropriate conservation and sustainable development strategies attempt to recognize this as being integral to any approach. Almost all cultures have in some way or form recognized the importance that nature, and its biological diversity has had upon them and the need to maintain it. Yet, power, greed and politics have affected the precarious balance. Who Cares?

Within the borders of the vast nation of Mongolia, there are incredible ecological treasures. Mongolia is home to one of the world's purest lake environments, a huge area of unique taiga forest and several endangered species, including the snow leopard. The Academy of Natural Sciences has established The Institute for Mongolian Biodiversity and Ecological Studies to study Mongolia's environment and assist its peoples in both conserving these resources and encouraging economic development through ecological tourism. For an interesting review and perspective on the Academy's program in Mongolia and its significance for biodiversity and environmental protection, please see the article written by Malcolm Scully (Special Editor) and published in the March 24, 2000 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education Contact: The Institute for Mongolian Biodiversity and Ecological Studies, Academy of Natural Sciences, 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19103, USA

After seven years, the Biodiversity Conservation Network shut its doors on September 30, 1999. BCN was established to test hypotheses about the conditions under which community-based enterprises can lead to conservation. BCN's legacy of analytic research and on-the-ground project support lives on through a collection of publications now available through BSP and the BSP Web site, www.bsponline.org . Please note that this BCN Web site is no longer being updated - current information on other BSP projects, and electronic versions of BCN publications, can be found at BSPonline. Reporting in 2002 has now finished - thank you to all of you who have reported. Analysis has begun of the data that were entered during this this reporting round and the results will be published on-line at the end of May 2003. In the meantime, you can still view the individual Lead Partner and LBAP reports as a guest here. The UK Biodiversity website aims to support the implementation of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and the partnership involved in biodiversity conservation. From here you can: Find out about UK biodiversity by accessing the local species and habitat action plan summaries; look at the contacts list; d ownload reports, guidance notes, news and documents from the library ; and e xplore the factors (keywords) affecting the decline of species or habitats

57. ETI - World Biodiversity Database
A continuously growing taxonomic database and information system that aims at documenting all known species.Category Science Environment biodiversity Informatics Databases......ETI's World biodiversity Database is a continuously growing taxonomic databaseand information system that aims at documenting all known species.
http://www.eti.uva.nl/Database/WBD.html
The WBD is intended to increase understanding and to support a responsible use and to facilitate the management of the earths biodiversity resources. It is built as a joint effort of specialists worldwide who contribute basic taxonomic, ecologic and biodiversity data to ETI to make this available in electronic form, both online in the WBD and in subsections on CD-ROMs. The WBD contains taxonomic information (hierarchies), species names, synonyms, descriptions, illustrations and literature references when available. A direct link to CMBI provides genetic information on protein sequence (from the PIR database) and nucleic sequence (from the EMBL database) for each taxon. In the future the WBD will be extended with online identification keys and an interactive geographic information system. A part of (sections of) the WBD is available on CD-ROM Those parts of ETI's WBD that represent so called Global Species Databases (full worldwide coverage on specific taxa) are linked to the Species 2000 Index of Species , a virtual basic taxonomic reference system, that is continuously updated by quality taxonomic databases. The Species 2000 Index acts as a basic species name references system that can help you to locate detailed information on species in the member databases. BioImages - Virtual Field-Guide (UK)
http://www.bioimages.org.uk/ Welcome to BioImages, the Virtual Field-Guide for UK Bio-diversity. Content : This site offers a large selection of pictures of Natural History objects, mostly British in origin. Purpose : The images are presented to illustrate biodiversity and as an aid to identification. While pictures alone are generally NOT sufficient for identification, by showing different stages, states and views of the organisms more information can be offered than is available in field-guides. How to find your way around : BioImages is arranged in the normal biological classification (or at least my interpretation of it.) This is a hierarchical system with species grouped in genera, genera in families, families in orders and so on up to kingdoms and superkingdoms. Living Things takes you to the top of the classification. tree. Searching: BioImages is indexed by Google
Search WWW Search www.bioimages.org.uk
Browsing: If you just want to browse, Shortcuts takes you to a list of links to groups of organisms. You can then go directly to the group your are interested in. Then follow the links down to the species you want to see. At the foot of each page in the classification hierarchy is a row of links to take you back up the hierarchy. Using these and the "down" links in the body of the page you can navigate sideways.
