Background Information The purpose of the Biodiversity Planning Support Programme (BPSP) in view of the above, is to strengthen the capacity of parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to prepare and implement National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP’s) in response to Article 6 of the CBD. While developing and implementing GEF supported Biodiversity Enabling Activities, parties have identified a number of difficulties whose resolution goes beyond the technical and managerial support provided by the GEF Implementing Agencies. These include inadequacy of existing information, materials and guidelines; a scarcity of appropriate expertise and experience; and difficulties in dealing with the complex and multi-sectoral nature of biodiversity planning. The BPSP draws on the full range of national and global experience to develop and provide the information, tools, training, and communication needed to support National teams to develop and implement comprehensive, multi-sectoral, and timely NBSAP’s, and to ensure a smooth transition between the development and implementation stages. BPSP supported activities include the development of information services, preparation of technical and advisory materials, training, and enhancing horizontal information exchange and technical co-operation among Parties to the CBD.

What is biodiversity?

BIODIVERSITY
The concept of biodiversity has provoked considerable debate and misunderstanding among the general public, decision-makers, and even the scientific community. Much has been published on the subject since its first appearance at the National Forum on BioDiversity in September, 1986, the proceedings of which became the best-seller BioDiversity . But what is biodiversity, what threatens it, why is it important, and what are ecologists doing to better understand it? What is Biodiversity?
Short for biological diversity, biodiversity includes all organisms, species, and populations; the genetic variation among these; and all their complex assemblages of communities and ecosystems. It also refers to the interrelatedness of genes, species, and ecosystems and their interactions with the environment. Usually three levels of biodiversity are discussed-genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity. Genetic diversity is all the different genes contained in all individual plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms. It occurs within a species as well as between species. Species diversity is all the differences within and between populations of species, as well as between different species.

Essay sections: Choose... Why is Madagascar so special? Biographies in biodiversity The human scene Conservation issues Travel and tourism Information sources and contacts Urban areas Rainforest Dry tropical forest Spiny desert Madagascar locations map Madagascar is about as far away as you can get from the United States, both geographically and biologically. The same principles of ecology and evolution apply everywhere, but the different conditions have led to very different results. Likewise, the threats to biodiversity have underlying similarities, but the details are quite different. Much of the original biodiversity still exists in Madagascar, but it may not survive long into the next century. This web site is intended to illuminate the principles of ecology and evolutionary biology and to educate people about threats to biodiversity. We hope that it will inspire you to learn about and protect biodiversity in your country as well as in Madagascar. David R. Parks and the Missouri Botanical Garden
