Geoffrey Dixon
, 10 October 1997. The slippery gooiness of biology is a consequence of its incredible complexity, consisting as it does of complex systems based upon chemistry. And chemistry obeys the rules of physics, which exists because of, and is consequently best described by, mathematics. Mathematics is the ur-fluid of Reality (gad, how poetic), and our symbollic attempts to represent mathematics have given us windows through which our mushy grey-matter can peer, and with which this same mushy grey-matter becomes altered, and we call this alteration understanding (a frequently generous appellation). The purpose of these pages is to press our noses against some of the windows that look upon biological systems, and to do it in as interactive and stimulating a way as possible, given the talents of we the page creators. There are four of us: Geoffrey Dixon, Steven Karel, Frank Lonberg and Mike Casey. This site will be evolving rapidly, so things will likely be different each time you look. Also see Dixon's interactive Mathematics and the Genome site.

VIENNA, AUSTRIA
JULY 16-20, 2003
As was officially announced at Quinnipiac, the next meeting of our Society will be held in Vienna, Austria, in mid-July 2003, at the invitation of the Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research (KLI) and the University of Vienna. Our local hosts are Werner Callebaut, who is the scientific manager of the KLI, and Gerd Mueller, who chairs the KLI Board and is a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Vienna. The KLI welcomes you to visit its homepage Vienna, the city of classical music and many important modern intellectual and cultural developments, needs little recommendation. Being clean, green, and safe, and ranking very high in most other dimensions of quality of life as well, it is a preferred location for conference venues. Located in the very heart of Europe, Vienna can be reached easily by aircraft, train, or car. The Viennese public transport network ranks among the best in the world. In addition to enjoying the city's own cultural riches, conference participants may want to visit other historical cities such as Prague (Czech Republic), Budapest (Hungary), or Cracow (Poland), which can all be reached from Vienna within a few hours; or they may prefer a hiking tour in the nearby Alps.

Since 1977 the Institute was renamed with its present name, the Institute of Molecular Biology. It is situated in the eastern part of Sofia, at the heart of a large constellation of academic institutes that forms the major campus of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
At present in IMB work over 150 employees, including 7 full professors, 9 associate professors, over 50 assistant professors, research associates, postgraduate students and many technicians.
IMB is the leading national institution in the field of molecular biology, molecular genetics, cell biology, biochemistry and bioorganic chemistry. Its achievements in these and related areas are documented in several hundred scientific papers published in international journals. IMB participates in many international collaborative projects that proves the high quality of the research carried out in it. Many of the projects are financed by EC, ICGEB, NATO, UNESCO, and other international organizations.
Since 1990 IMB is a member of the Global Network for Molecular and Cell Biology (MCBN) at UNESCO.
