About Mauritius
Old Print of a Dodo The dodo was a flightless bird native only to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The dodo was a flightless member of the pigeon family. Fully grown dodos weighted about 23 kg (50 pounds). Around 1505 the Portuguese became the first Europeans to discover the dodo. By 1681 it had been driven to extinction by humans and the feral dogs, pigs, rats, and monkeys introduced by Europeans to Mauritius. The dodo was not the only Mauritian bird driven to extinction in recent centuries. Of the 45 bird species originally found, only 21 still survive. Two bird species closely related to the dodo also became extinct: the Réunion solitaire (raphus solitarius) . by 1746, and the Rodrigues solitaire (pezophaps solitaria ) by 1790. Reports of sightings of living dodos in the 1990s on Mauritius prompted William J. Gibbons to mount expeditions to search for them. None were found.

    The Amazing World of Birds
Welcome to the beautiful, the wonderful, the truly amazing world of birds Birds are truly beautiful creatures, they are also fascinating and all around us, roosting and nesting on our buildings and feeding in our gardens and refuse dumps, they are easy to find and fun to observe. Birds are probably the most beloved group of wild animals on the planet. Their ubiquitous presence, colourful form, intelligent actions and cheeky mannerisms endear them to us all. Birds are easy to love. The existence of societies like the National Audubon Society of America with 550 000 members and the RSPB , originally of the UK, with over 1,000,000 members are a testament to how popular birds are.
    Some Amazing Bird Facts
There are about 9 703 species of birds divided up into 23 orders, 142 families and 2 057 genera (Sibley and Monroe 1992). Birds can be found on all major land masses from the poles to the tropics as well as in or over all our seas and oceans and their accompanying islands. The total number of birds on the planet is very difficult to estimate because their populations fluctuate seasonally, but scientists have suggested that there may be between 100,000 and 200,000 million adult or near adult birds on the planet at any one time. Of these the most common or populous wild bird in the world is the Red-billed Quelea (

    93. The Birds
Summary and analysis of Aristophanes' play 'The birds.'
    http://www.theatrehistory.com/ancient/bates026.html
THE BIRDS A summary and analysis of the play by Aristophanes This document was originally published in The Drama: Its History, Literature and Influence on Civilization, vol. 2 . ed. Alfred Bates. London: Historical Publishing Company, 1906. pp. 43-46. The Birds In the subjoined extract the birds give their account of the creation of the world, which is in the poets most fantastic vein.
    It was Chaos and Night at the first, and the blackness of darkness, and hell's broad border;
Earth was not, nor air, neither heaven; when in depths of the womb of the dark without order
First thing first born of the black-plumed Night was a wind-egg hatched in her bosom,
Whence timely, with season revolving again, sweet Love burst out as a blossom,
Gold wings glittering forth of his back, like whirlwinds gustily turning
He, after his wedlock with Chaos, whose wings are of darkness in hell broad-burning,
For his nestings begat him a race of birds first and upraised us to light new-lighted.

Hummingbirds in British Columbia folklore and in other First Nations cultures.
    http://www.folklore.bc.ca/Hummingbirds.htm
    The British Columbia Folklore Society
    Hummingbirds in Folklore and Legend.
The American anthropologist Dr. George M. Foster, in , (1949) Maria Leach (ed.) New York, 1972, p.510 writes HUMMINGBIRD: A minor character in American Indian folktale and mythology. The northern Paiute Indians [U.S. Great Basin area] say that Hummingbird once filled his pants full of seeds and started on a journey to see what was beyond the sun. He ate only one seed a day, but had to turn back because his food gave out. He didn't see anything. In eastern Brazil, Hummingbird is the character who hoarded water so that the people had none at all until the Caingang and Botocudo Indians released it.
Philip Drucker, on page 451 of The Northern and Central Nootkan Tribes [on the west coast of Vancouver Island] Smithsonian Institution Bureau of American Ethnology Bulletin 144, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, 1951 wrote Pages 472-549 of The Report of the 70th Meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science
Today the Skqomic are usually referred to as the Squamish. They live in an area to the north and north-west of Vancouver on the coastal mainland of B.C.

Trinidad is the Southern most island of the Caribbean, located off the East coast of Venezuela, the two countries being separated by a channel which is not more than seven miles wide. As a result of its location, Trinidad and Tobago have a South American or neotropical fauna, as opposed to the other islands of the Caribbean whose bird life is predominately "Tropical North American". Its location also gives Trinidad the unique advantage of harbouring over 400 species of birds, making it one of the richest birding countries per square mile in the world. Dr. Russell Barrow , a renowned local photographer, has captured many of these species on film. In addition it also has an advantage over its South and Central American neighbours of having most of its 1200 square miles easily accessible by good roads and forest tracks, making for an easy and attractive alternative to the mainland's dense forests and inaccessible swamps. All the good birding areas are within a one to two hour drive from the capital city Port-Of-Spain or the Asa Wright Nature Centre which provides excellent accommodation for visiting birders.
