March 14, 2003 - Plants In Motion
This is a double encore link, featured before in February, 1997, and again in January 1999, by Roger P. Hangarter of University of Indiana. He has photographed the ordinary responses of plants to stimulation in their environment using time-lapse Quicktime movies. Displayed are seed germiniation, phototropism, gravitropism, circadian movements, nutation, wilting, growth habits, and photomorphogenesis to name a few. The movies continue to increase in diversity and also in presentation. A couple artists have set these to music (also available on the site). This site requires the free Quicktime player from Apple (many platforms supported). If nothing happens with the movie, make sure it has downloaded completely and press the arrowhead. The presentations are useful for grades 7 to beginning undergraduate botany classes. (****) -S

  • A Guide to the use of Terms in Plant Pathology - The efforts of committees and individuals who have attempted in the past to provide widely acceptable definitions of terms commonly used in plant pathology have achieved only limited success, not necessarily because the definitions have been bad, but because plant pathologists have failed to make good use of them. Several reasons can be suggested; because lists of definitions have generally been published in journals, and have to be sought amongst remote back-numbers; because some definitions have been so terse that the proper limits of their applicability have not always been clear; because of valid differences of opinion between schools of thought, and of conflicting definitions in different lists; through lack of awareness that such lists exist, and through failure to appreciate that precision in the communication of facts and ideas is no less important than precision of observation and experimentation. pop (Added: 16-Apr-1999 Hits: 201)

16. GardenWeb Glossary Of Botanical Terms
Regularly updated glossary of more than 4400 terms relating to botany, gardening, horticulture and landscape architecture.
T he GardenWeb Glossary of Botanical Terms currently contains 4400 terms relating to botany, gardening, horticulture and landscape architecture and is regularly updated. The form below allows you to search the glossary for one or more keywords.
New Search:
[see notes] Or Whole Words Notes:
  • This is version: February 4, 2002.
  • If you are looking up names of plants, check the Horti Plex plant database here at GardenWeb.
  • Proper nouns are generally not included in the glossary.
  • Searches are case insensitive.
  • You can browse the glossary, but there are many pages.
  • Multiple keywords can be searched so that each word must appear in each hit (boolean "and") or so that only one of the words must appear (boolean "or").
  • To increase the chances of matching keywords with multiple endings, search for "Word Roots." With this setting, epiphyt will match both epiphyte and epiphytic.
  • You can also limit your search to just terms or just definition.
  • Additional Passes: If there are no hits in the first search, common word endings (-ing, -es, -ed, -ly) are stripped from the keywords and a second pass is made. If there is still no match, all non-word characters are stripped.
  • This glossary was compiled by the editors of GardenWeb from a variety of sources.

The Botanical Society of America exists to promote botany, the field of basic science dealing with the study and inquiry into the form, function, diversity, reproduction, evolution, and uses of plants and their interactions within the biosphere. To accomplish this mission, the objectives of The Society are to: sustain and provide improved formal and informal education about plants; encourage basic plant research; provide expertise, direction, and position statements concerning plants and ecosystems; and foster communication within the professional botanical community, and between botanists and the rest of humankind through publications, meetings, and committees.
