Lab Focus: Dr. AndersÂ’ current research activities include: 1. A multi-treatment approach to enhance regeneration of the corticospinal tract and restore corticospinal tract function after acute spinal cord injury in adult rats. Combined treatments include olfactory ensheathing cell transplantation and application of a synthetic glucocorticoid steroid, methylprednisolone. 2. The use of photobiomodulation (low power laser irradiation) to promote regeneration of acutely transected corticospinal tract axons. The regeneration of corticospinal tract axons through and beyond the lesion site is determined quantitatively and reinnervation of the target tissue is determined by behavioral testing. 3. A number of research projects are underway on an animal model of type II diabetes, the Fat Sand Rat (Psammomys obesus). These projects include: the characterization of peripheral diabetic neuropathy in this animal model, the use of Optical Coherence Tomography (a novel non-invasive imaging technique), to observe changes that occur in cutaneous nerves and microvessels during the development of diabetes induced peripheral neuropathy, and use of photobiomodulation as a therapy for impaired wound healing in the diabetic animal.

The past century has witnessed a breathtaking array of discoveries in the biological sciences, in particular in the general area of molecular biology, the scientific discipline that seeks to fully understand the molecular basis of heredity, genetic variation, and the expression patterns of individual units of heredity called genes. (Please see our brief primer on molecular biology ) Newspaper articles and media reports today routinely discuss advances in "gene therapy" and "transgenics", procedures which would have been unimaginable even a generation ago.
Many people view genetic engineering as a relatively new field of scientific pursuit, but in fact the techniques that are in use today are the result of a series of landmark discoveries that were made over a period spanning more than 125 years. This article presents a timeline of key discoveries that have culminated in the human genome project, an international effort to decipher the sequence of the 3 billion base pair subunits of DNA which reside in the chromosomes of human beings.
    1865 Medelian Inheritance
    Mendel
published the results of cross breeding experiments he had conducted on the garden pea Pisum sativum . By noting the appearance or disappearance of traits, such as pod and flower color, over several generations Mendel was able to postulate a generalized set of rules governing inheritance. He proposed that there are discrete units of heredity (which today we call genes) which are transmitted from generation to generation, even though some of these units are not necessarily expressed as an observable trait in every generation.

    55. Cell Biology And Molecular Physiology Graduate Program
Studies lead to a Ph.D. degree. Graduates will be able to study and appreciate cell function, physiology, cell interactions, and development from the molecular to the organ level.
    http://www.cbp.pitt.edu/gradprog.html
Training Cell Biologists for the new Millennium The program in Cell Biology and Molecular Physiology has a rich tradition of scientific training and discovery. Graduates of the Ph.D. program are now chairs of departments at six major U.S. medical schools. Today, the department brings together basic and clinical research faculty who are dedicated to their research programs and to the training of students. Among the medical school departments, this faculty is uniquely focused on integrative biology; that is, using the tools of genetics and molecular biology to understand the integrated functions of cells and organisms in the era following description of the human genome.
Our program offers the opportunity to interact with multiple, well supported faculty with international reputations. Students receive stipends throughout their training, which is a rich experience going far beyond formal classroom training, including numerous journal clubs, research conferences and the opportunity to attend national and international meetings.
The central theme of integrative biology in our program plays out in research projects that are focused on important diseases, including heart disease, cancer and diabetes, as well as inherited disorders of developmental and reproductive functions.
