Devaney Department of Mathematics Boston University Boston, MA 02215 One of the most interesting applications of technology in the mathematics classroom is the fact that it allows teachers to bring many new and exciting topics into the curriculum. In particular, technology lets teachers bring some topics of contemporary interest in research mathematics into both middle school and high school classrooms. The mathematical topics of chaos and fractals are particularly appropriate in this regard. They are timely-many ideas in these fields were first conceived during the students' lifetimes. They are applicable-fields as diverse as medicine, business, geology, art, and music have adopted ideas from these areas. And they are beautiful-there is something in the gorgeous computer generated images of objects such as the Mandelbrot set, Julia sets, the Koch snowflake, and others that capture students' interest and enthusiasm. Therein, however, lies the problem. Many research mathematicians cringe at the sight of ``still another fractal.'' Most often, discussions of chaos and fractals degenerate to simple ``pretty picture shows,'' devoid of any mathematical content. As a consequence, students get the idea that modern mathematics is akin to a video game-lots of computer-generated action, but mindless activity at best.

But the bad control and poor camera angles mixed with crummy graphics make Urban chaos difficult to play for more than an hour at a time. The whole port feels rushed, and I would have gladly waited a couple more months for a polished version. At first glance, Urban Chaos seems to be an interesting mixture of Fighting Force and Syndicate Wars ; take a beat-'em-up engine and mix with a story of gangs uniting and taking over the city. Throw in some big, immersive environments, and you get a pretty solid game. But while decent on the PC , the PSX version leaves something to be desired. Urban Chaos starts off with a killer intro movie, bringing you right up to speed with the story. It's New Years Eve, turn of the millennium, but that doesn't stop the street gang known as the Wildcats from wreaking havoc and generally making things a little uncomfortable for the citizens of Union City. You play D'Arcy, a rookie cop doing your damnedest to keep crime rates down and prove yourself to your superiors, but the Wildcats are a force to be reckoned with, and the streets are mean. The game has the typical list of moves for a beat-'em-upper: punch, kick, dodge, etc., but what good is being a cop if you can't bust the baddies? So the nice developers at Mucky Foot added the option of knocking them to the ground, cuffing them and hauling them downtown. The arrest option gets the heathen scum out of your face ASAP, which is a good thing when you're trapped in an alley with four armed psychos. You can also give them a good old-fashioned 'frisking' to procure new weapons or health packs. Another new feature is sneaking, because the best tactic isn't always to bust in shooting the place up.

Julian Gollop has also written many other strategy games, in particular the excellent Rebelstar series and Laser Squad. Chaos is actually an unfinished game. Games Workshop released it without Julians knowledge, and as such there is the odd bug that crops up. Further clues to this include the fact that if you hack into the program, there are a few sprites not used in the game, and the names of a few spells that are never shown. These are:- TROLL - There's a sprite for it, too. And a sprite for a BLIND dead Gooey Blob.
