84. Chaos-Making A New Science By James Gleick
An excerpt from the awardwinning bestseller that brought the forefront of chaos research to public Category Science Math chaos and Fractals chaos...... In 1974, though few of his colleagues knew it, Feigenbaum was working on a problemthat was deep chaos. Where chaos begins, classical science stops.

"An awe-inspiring book. Reading it gave me that sensation that someone had just found the light switch." —Douglas Adams "This is a stunning work, a deeply exciting subject in the hands of a first-rate science writer. It has been a long, long time since I finished a book and immediately started reading it all over again for sheer pleasure.-Lewis Thomas From the Prologue: T he police in the small town of Los Alamos, New Mexico, worried briefly in 1974 about a man seen prowling in the dark, night after night, the red glow of his cigarette floating along the back streets. He would pace for hours, heading nowhere in the starlight that hammers down through the thin air of the mesas. The police were not the only ones to wonder. At the national laboratory some physicists had learned that their newest colleague was experimenting with twenty-six-hour days, which meant that his waking schedule would slowly roll in and out of phase with theirs. This bordered on strange, even for the Theoretical Division.

in Applied Sciences and Engineering "The International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos is the most handsomely produced, with its large pages and type, and it is the place to publish colour figures. The covers are breathtaking and the articles are rich with brilliant colour pictures (free to authors). When lack of shelf space forces the clearing of my office some years from now, I shall hesitate to throw out any of these issues. Each begins with valuable tutorials and reviews, and is followed by papers and letters. It is evident that much effort has been expended to bring high-quality readable papers from a variety of scientific fields into this quarterly publication. Not just in terms of its low cost, I consider this journal the best buy." - Nature Now in its thirteen year of publication, the International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos is widely regarded as the leading journal in the exciting field of chaos and nonlinear science. Represented by an international editorial board comprising seventy of the top researchers from a wide variety of disciplines, it is setting the standard in scientific and production quality. The journal has been highly acclaimed by the scientific community around the world, and has featured many important papers by leading researchers from various fields.

    Outline
    Introduction to Chaos
The dictionary definition of chaos is turmoil, turbulence, primordial abyss, and undesired randomness, but scientists will tell you that chaos is something extremely sensitive to initial conditions. Chaos also refers to the question of whether or not it is possible to make good long-term predictions about how a system will act. A chaotic system can actually develop in a way that appears very smooth and ordered.
    Determinism
Sir Isaac Newton Determinism is the belief that every action is the result of preceding actions. It began as a philosophical belief in Ancient Greece thousands of years ago and was introduced into science around 1500 A.D. with the idea that cause and effect rules govern science. Sir Isaac Newton was closely associated with the establishment of determinism in modern science. His laws were able to predict systems very accurately. They were deterministic at their core because they implied that everything that would occur would be based entirely on what happened right before. The Newtonian model of the universe is often depicted as a billiard game in which the outcome unfolds mathematically from the initial conditions in a pre-determined fashion, like a movie that can be run forwards or backwards in time. Determinism remains as one of the more important concepts of physical science today.

    Background
Take a peacefull kingdom with a just king (king Richard), a handfull of old caves, mystic towers, some forests and add an evil witch (Scotia) who thinks she has to rule the kingdom, a bunch of evil monsters and you end up with.....Lands of Lore. The picture below shows the poisoned king with a defending shield over him. The history of the Lands is divided into six periods. The first is The Unknown Beginning when the Lands were created. Then came The Golden Age when the Ancients roamed the Lands. There were no wars. Then followed The War of the Heretics. The ancients felt and the Dark Army rose for the first time. The Ancients became a myth. The Dark Times was the fourth period. A period of darkness. Small states appeared with every race. After that followed The Racial Wars. A lot of small wars not relating to each other. Some races were wiped out and the ultimate result was that the four races (Humans, Huline, Dracoids and Thomgog) established domination over the Lands. The period now existing in the lands is called Rise of the Dark Army, because, er yes, the Dark army is rising. You get the primary mission to kill Scotia.
    Yourself
After seeing the intro you have to choose a character. You only get the opportunity to select one out of four pre-made people. A Dracoid (a sort of dragon-human) mage named Ak'shel, a Human fighter named Michael, a Human allrounder named Conrad and a fast (it means that when the other characters hit twice the Hulin can hit three times) Huline named Kieran. It's one of the bad things in LoL that you can't make your own people but are stuck with the four pre-made.

    Abstract:
We present new tools allowing a formal classification of cellular automata; that is, transfinite attraction and a kind of Hamming distance. We also investigate a class of complex aperiodic systems. This brings new insights in understanding spatio-temporal chaos for the class of discrete-time multi-dimensional systems.

Welcome to the new and improved "Codex Chaos" brought to you by Death Dealer. I hope you enjoy the changes I'm making. Other than the subtle layout changes, "Codex Chaos" site no longer incorporates frames. This may increase loading time slightly, but should make navigation simpler. Most of the links will not work at this point in time, but I am working to fix that as you read this. I hope to have the remainder of the site formatted within the week. As a final note, every page is going to look almost identical, with the exception of the menu bar and this box, so don't freak out if you think your browser keeps loading the same page. News and Updates!!! The demons are coming... Yup, you heard me! After careful consideration of both the theme of this sight and the fact I enjoy not being in jail, I knixed my original idea of an up-to-date army list. Yeah, I know, sucks don't it, oh well, what can you do? I do have the first section of the army list section up though, purely for nastalgia sakes I assure you. Next up will be the Demonic Creatures section! Then for all of you who have no clue how truly chaotic Chaos USED TO BE, I'm gonna finish that off with the complete army lists from the old codex. And trust me, the game used to be WAY more confusing and a lot less constrictive. On another note, some of you may notice the slight design spoofs today. Only I would spend six hours trying to save three seconds on the loading time. But you know you love me, don't you? Once I finish up with the army list I promise I'll get to the information page, I'm saving the miscellaneous for last...just too much to put in there to mess with it now.
