by James MacKinnon Bubblesville is a TV hit, and now the boss wants toy sales to match the ratings. So far, only boys are buying the products. Your challenge: to get the girls tugging at their mothers' purse strings. Time to call a child psychology research firm. They might suggest a projective completion test girls are given a picture of a boy and girl watching TV. The boy is asking the girl, "Why do you want to watch Bubblesville?" The test subjects are asked to write in an answer. Bingo! You're making real progress on your marketing plan. The CEO looks mighty chuffed . . . . This scenario is a fiction, but the testing technique is real, described by Dr. James McNeal in Marketing Tools magazine. McNeal calls this "good sense and good science." In a recent letter to the American Psychological Association, 60 psychologists from across the US call it something else entirely: "the use of psychology to exploit and influence children for commercial purposes." "I don't think people understand the extent of psychological tools employed against their kids to whip up their desire to buy products," says Gary Ruskin of Commercial Alert, the Washington, DC organization that spearheaded the letter. "When they find out, they're horrified."

Members of disliked minority groups are often stereotyped as representing a danger to the majority society's most vulnerable members. Historically, Black men in the United States were often falsely accused of raping White women, and commonly lynched as a result. Jews in the Middle Ages were accused of murdering Christian babies in ritual sacrifices. In a similar fashion, gay people have often been portrayed as a threat to children. When Anita Bryant campaigned successfully in 1977 to repeal a Dade County (FL) ordinance prohibiting anti-gay discrimination, she named her organization "Save Our Children," and warned that "a particularly deviant-minded [gay] teacher could sexually molest children" (Bryant, 1977, p. 114). [ Bibliographic references are on a different web page In recent years, antigay activists have routinely asserted that gay people are child molesters. This argument has often been raised in debates about the Boy Scouts of America's policy to exclude gay scouts and scoutmasters. It has also been raised in connection with recent scandals about the Catholic church's attempts to cover up the abuse of young males by priests. Indeed, the Vatican's early response to the 2002 revelations of widespread Church cover-ups of sexual abuse by priests was to declare that gay men should not be ordained.

What does anxiety look like in your child? At times, the most damaging anxiety is nearly invisible: a well-behaved nail-biter who gets mostly A's - but what about those migraine headaches on weekends? A child who withdraws into his room and daydreams. He's not a bother to his family, though, so what's to worry about? Plenty. Anxious children are more likely than adults to have physical symptoms, including sleeplessness, stomach aches and headaches. When stress hormones kick in, a child is on high alert and unable to relax. Anxiety - not ADHD - is one of the top reasons why children can't focus in school, psychiatrists have found. What can add to a child's anxiety? Your parenting style - rigid, disinterested, give-and-take - and how you handle your own anxiety.

91. Q & A: Health And Spirituality: Ouija Board, Devil And Special Prayer...

Question
My daughter came to me the other night in tears. She said that, at an overnight party, she had fooled around with a Ouija board. She said that someone at church told her that she had allowed the devil into her life and would now have problems unless she undergoes some sort of special prayer. What is she talking about? What can I do to help her?
Answer
There are indeed some groups within various religions who belief that Ouija boards are evil and therefore subject people to various forms of prayer, some of which can be quite traumatic. You might instead consider the following: Ask your daughter what, if anything, she "asked" the Ouija board since "answers" can sometimes be disturbing and frightening.
