Estimated Time Required: 50 minutes
Anticipated Learning Outcomes
  • Students will gain an understanding of how the movements of the Earth's plates over the past 180 million years (abbreviated My) may have affected the climate of the continents.
  • Students will use maps of ancient continental positions and, with some basic concepts about climate zones, hypothesize what climate changes may have occurred due to plate movements.
Background Climate is simply weather "averaged" over a time period of one year or more. In general terms, the climate in most of the United States and Canada is "temperate". Moving to the south, closer to the equator, the climate is "subtropical" and then "tropical". At the Earth's poles the climate is termed "polar". Each of these climate zones is characterized by a distinctive temperature range, rainfall amount, and type of vegetation. In a very simplified sense, climate zones are oriented roughly parallel to lines of latitude about the Earth. However, according to the theory of plate tectonics, the continents "ride" on dynamic plates which make up the Earth's surface. Although the resulting movement of the continents is very slow, over millions of years it is enough to get a continent from one place to another, and that movement may take the landmass through several latitudes and climate zones.

Tackling the Problem Of Global Warming WWF has led international efforts to conserve nature and protect the diversity of life on Earth for over 40 years, and we believe in addressing the source of the global warming problem. Global warming is caused by emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases that blanket the world and trap in heat. The major source of CO emissions is burning coal, oil and gas. WWF's goal is to ensure that industrialized nations set in motion a permanent downward trend in their domestic emissions of CO as a first step toward substantial reductions by 2010. The year 1998 was the warmest year ever measured globally in history and all ten of the warmest years ever measured worldwide over the last 120 years occurred after 1981. The six warmest of these years all occurred after 1990. This human-induced climate change threatens the survival of many plants and animals as well as the well-being of people around the world. Clearly we must address this problem now using available solutions and technologies that reduce CO emissions.

Tackling Climate Change in the UK
Foreword by the DPM
I am extremely pleased to be reporting in this leaflet on the UK's progress towards its climate change targets. I believe firmly in the importance of taking action to tackle the threat of climate change. We are continually reminded of how vulnerable we are to changes in the earth's climate. And we should never forget the potential economic, social and environmental cost if we do nothing. These thoughts have been at the front of my mind as the UK Government has been developing and implementing a programme of action to cut our greenhouse gas emissions. The UK's greenhouse gas emissions are on a downward trend at the moment. This is largely the result of changes in our energy sector, changes with significant costs to the communities involved. Because we were confident that we could do more, the UK agreed to a challenging target of a 12.5% cut in the basket of six greenhouse gases. The Government also went further and set an even more demanding domestic goal to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 20% below 1990 levels by 2010. We have introduced many policies and measures in the UK since Kyoto, covering all sectors. This leaflet reports on some of the main ones. Further details of these initiatives will be outlined in the UK's climate change programme - a draft of which should be published for consultation towards the end of 1999. We have concentrated on those policies which do not just cut emissions. There are many which have 'win-win' outcomes by bringing other, wider benefits for people, for example, more efficient industry, warmer homes, lower fuel bills and better transport systems. We are continuing to work with business, local government and other organisations to ensure that any additional measures we take to cut emissions do not adversely affect the UK's competitiveness and put us in a good position to meet the longer term threat of climate change.

Methane and Other Gases Contact Us Print Version Search: EPA Home Home Topics in Brief Reports ... Site Map As a contributor to climate change, methane is second only to carbon dioxide. Over the last two centuries, methane concentrations in the atmosphere have more than doubled, largely due to human-related activities. Reductions of about 10 percent in emissions from these anthropogenic sources would halt the annual rise in methane concentrations, effectively contributing to mitigation of climate change. Around the world, industry, working in conjunction with government, has implemented emissions reduction strategies that have improved operational efficiency. In the United States, many companies are working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in voluntary efforts to help achieve emissions reductions by implementing cost-effective management methods and technologies.

Introduction
The impact of global change on agriculture has been studied extensively for various crops at many different scales. However, relatively few studies have focused on rice, the most important staple food crop in Asia, where the already large population of rice consumers is rapidly increasing. In 1989, the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Environmental Research Lab in Corvallis (ERL-C), Oregon, and the International Rice Research Institute ( IRRI ) in the Philippines initiated a major research project to investigate relationships between climate change and rice production. One component of this project was the quantification of the impact of climate change on rice production using crop simulation models, integrating existing knowledge of effects of increased levels of CO2 and temperature. This simulation component, hereafter referred to as Simulation of the Impact of Climate Change (SIC2), was partially funded by EPA, but executed by IRRI in collaboration with four teams of the SARP project (Simulation and Systems Analysis for Rice Production, a collaborative project of IRRI, the Research Institute for Agrobiology and Soil Fertility (
