ADUni.org
The goal of ArsDigita University was to offer the world's best computer science education, at an undergraduate level, to people who were otherwise unable to obtain it. ADUni.org is now a site run by alumni of the school seeking to carry on that mission. In 2000-2001, 34 talented and motivated college graduates attended a one-year, intensive, comprehensive undergraduate computer science program, for free. The program was an experiment in curriculum design, free education, and the effect of the Internet on the future of education. ArsDigita University was the brainchild of entrepreneur Philip Greenspun and the ArsDigita Foundation. After one year, ArsDigita University lost funding and was forced to close its physical doors. Yet, we prefer to think of the program as dormant, not dead. As we redesign aduni.org, we will continue to host all of our course materials and will provide as much information as possible about the workings of this past year - who we are, what we did, how we did it, what worked, what didn't work, and what we're doing now.

I've decided not to produce a new version of BURKS this year. It would have meant going to 5 or 6 CDs, so I'm going to wait another year and see if DVD becomes more widespread by next summer (and also, after doing this for six years, I need a break!). So I'm planning to produce the next (7th) edition in the summer of 2003. See the ordering information page for more details on pricing.
What is BURKS?
BURKS (the Brighton University Resource Kit for Students) is a non-profit set of 4 CDs containing over 2 gigabytes of useful resources for computer science students. It is intended to provide some of the benefits of the Internet to students with no (or limited, or expensive) Internet access. It provides students with a comprehensively indexed website on CD-ROM which can be used either online or offline. The whole BURKS collection is available online at this site.

UW Constraint-Based Systems
Welcome to the home page for the Constraints research group at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering University of Washington A constraint is a relation that should be satisfied – for example, that a line remain horizontal, that a resistor in an electrical circuit simulation obey Ohm's Law, or that one column in a web page table be at least twice as wide as another. Constraints have been used in a variety of languages and systems, particularly in user interface toolkits, in planning and scheduling, and in simulation. UW constraints research has been in several areas, including the design and implementation of constraint solvers, applying constraints to user interface construction, and the design and implementation of constraint programming languages. Recent research has primarily focused on constraint solvers and on using constraints in web applications.

Solvers
We have designed a number of constraint satisfaction algorithms over the years, including DeltaBlue, SkyBlue, Indigo, Ultraviolet (is there a pattern here?), and Cassowary (I guess not). For researchers interested in experimenting with such algorithms, we recommend Cassowary; for certain applications, DeltaBlue may be useful as well.

Argonne National Laboratory
University of Chicago The Distributed Systems Laboratory (DSL) is a research and software development group within the Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) Division at Argonne National Laboratory and the Department of Computer Science at The University of Chicago A Grid is a persistent infrastructure that supports computation-intensive and data-intensive collaborative activities, especially when these activities span organizations. Grid computing facilitates the formation of "Virtual Organizations" for shared use of distributed computational resources. Under the leadership of Dr. Ian Foster , the DSL hosts research and development activities designed to realize the potential of "Grids" for computational science and engineering. Together with Carl Kesselman's Center for Grid Technologies at the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute , we are co-founders of the Globus Project TM , a highly-collaborative international and multidisciplinary effort to make Grid computing a reality.

Computer Science Lab
Welcome to Computer Science Lab where you'll find Windows software that offers interactive, computer-based instruction in science and technology. Our initial product is a $15 CD-ROM that offers a unique, multi-media curriculum that comes complete with all the tools, manuals, and example programs that you need to learn computer programming While preparing this curriculum, my target audience was high school students. But I am a challenging teacher, as evidenced by the fact that over half of my customers have been engineers working in IT (information technology) who just never had a chance to learn to program. My curriculum is being used in high school classrooms, junior high clubs, charter schools, and home schools (minimal computer savvy is required on the part of the homeschool parents!). Computer based learning is a natural way to offer computer programming lessons. My unique computer curriculum offers 3 different environments of graduated complexity: a programmable RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) calculator, an Intel 8051 microprocessor that we program using assembly language, and finally the C++ language. Each of the 3 languages comes complete with an integrated development environment (IDE) that provides an editor, compiler, and debugger. I provide fully explained solutions to fun programming projects such as a scrolling electronic signboard, a robotic mouse in a maze, an audio peak detector using an LED bar graph, and the Breakout video game. In addition to the introduction to assembly language programming and the introduction to C++, this curriculum offers an introduction to Windows programming and demonstrates its "event driven" nature.
