Abstract Introduction Social Death: Operationalizing the Death Concept Technological Change, and Changes in Social Death ...

    Abstract
The death at issue in the brain death debate is not an empiric reality, but a social category, "social death." It is a question of which bodies we are comfortable using and disposing of in certain ways, and not comfortable giving medicine or food as if they were "alive." Until recently both mind and body stopped functioning at the same time, and this "death" and "social death" were generally seen as one phenomenon. There were important exceptions, however, in many cultures where particular diseases and disabilities earned a social death definition before the physical death had occurred.
    Introduction
For everyday purposes we know and can say whether an animal is alive or not. But upon closer inquiry, we find that this is, in many cases, a very complex question, as the jurists know very well. They have cudgeled their brains in vain to discover a rational limit beyond which the killing of the child in its mother's womb is murder. It is just as impossible to determine absolutely the moment of death, for physiology proves that death is an not instantaneous, momentary phenomenon, but a very protracted process. (Engels,1880

The mission of the Life Extension Society (LES) is to support research and public education in human life extension. LES published the Life Extension Society News and sponsors speakers and seminars on life extension topics such as nutrition and nutritional supplementation, anti-aging medicine, cryobiology, and nanotechnology. LES is a membership organization, with most members being from the mid-Atlantic region. LES membership dues currently are $20.00 per calendar year. New members are always are welcome. The next Life Extension Society meeting will be held at Joel Finkelman's house in Silver Spring Maryland, at 2 pm on Sunday, February 2nd, 2003. Meetings are open to everyone with an interest in life extension. LES supports cryonics as "life extension of last resort." Cryonic suspension is an experimental procedure whereby patients who no longer can be kept alive with today's medical abilities are preserved at low temperature for treatment in the future. Researchers in biology, medicine, and nanotechnology are striving to improve the science of low-temperature preservation and restoration. A number of LES members also are members of cryonics organizations The first two phases of cryogenic preservation occur at the site of a donor's deanimation and together are called cryonic stabilization. LES is

    72. Nanotechnology And Cryonics
An introduction by Jerry Emanuelson of Colorado Futurescience. 3 printed pages.
    http://www.webcom.com/cfsc/nanocryo.html
NANOTECHNOLOGY In the final analysis, aging and death have only one cause: for whatever reason, the atoms and molecules in our bodies have moved from their proper positions; and other molecules and atoms have moved into positions where they should not be. The molecular machinery in our bodies maintains our lives by handling molecules at the molecular level. A molecular machine is a large molecule that manipulates other molecules, one at a time. We put random assortments of molecules, in the form of food, into our bodies; but these molecules are useless without the intricate molecular machinery in our bodies that sorts through the molecules, rearranging them as necessary, and transporting them to their proper places. When we take a supplemental vitamin or hormone or a medicine, all we can do with today's technology is to inject it into our bloodstream or swallow it, and hope that the body's molecular machinery will transport and use the substances properly. During surgery, even the most precise microsurgery, the surgeon's scalpel slices through thousands of cells moving trillions of molecules out of their proper positions. At the cellular level, every surgical procedure is an unbelievably crude operation. The surgeon relies heavily on the molecular machinery of the body to put things back in position after the surgery is over. If we could develop machines the size of viruses to continuously and efficiently maintain the molecules of our bodies, augmenting the natural molecular machinery in our bodies, we would never get sick. Such maintenance would have to include getting rid of the molecules that aren't supposed to be there.

    CRYONICS
    Thomas Donaldson
We can begin with some definitions. Cryonics is the practice of frozen storage of human beings, if necessary, for hundreds of years, until they can be revived and cured of whatever illness or injury caused their legal death. Cryonic suspension is the procedure by which a patient is frozen after legal death. Immediately when the possibility of cryonics is raised, all kinds of questions come to mind. Why do we want to do such a thing to ourselves or others? What could someone hope to gain by it Why do we think that we can be stored for so long? What is the chance that we will really come back? This introduction will give answers to these questions.
    AGING AND "IMMORTALITY"
I do not wish to belabor this point, which is nevertheless the MOTIVATION for cryonics. It is not proposed to bring back old people only for them to die soon afterwards. It is proposed to keep them frozen until their aging can be significantly REVERSED. Control of growth and development will serve adequately to accomplish this. One excellent short popular article discussing this possibility, which seems far closer than most people think, is: A. Rosenfeld

The pivotal election year of 2004 will determine more than the next president of the United States. Violent crime continues to be the number one political issue in America. For many citizens, a vote for Senator Travis Hall is also a vote for his controversial Swift and Sure Anti-Crime Bill , a measure that guarantees a previously convicted violent criminal one fair trial, one quick appeal, then immediate execution. Voters overwhelmingly support the idea, surrendering their individual rights and due process of law with a resounding "yes" for capital punishment. One of the most influential businessmen in the world, Harvard graduate and software prodigy Randall Armstrong, has one goal: to build a machine that can detect lies with 100 percent accuracy. But aside from assuring the guilt in death-row cases, the device has broad implications for a planet on a collision course with self-destruction.
