This is the British Cover, to see the other covers for this book click here. THE PROSPECT OF IMMORTALITY Following is from the dust jacket of the British hard cover edition, 1965. Would you like to live for ever, here on this earth? In the very near future this may become a real possibility. Indeed, in theory it is possible now, for if one was to be deep-frozen and stored away it is inevitable that in fifty, or a hundred, or a thousand years (time becomes meaningless in this context) surgery will have progressed to the point where damage to the cells which is at present irreparable will be able to be repaired. The difficulty at the moment is that present methods of freezing and unfreezing are so crude that a great deal more damage is done in the process. But this again is something which will soon be overcome. Should it happen, and there is the possibility that the first cases are already on ice, there will clearly be innumerable complications over the religious, social, and legal status of 'corpses', not to mention the purely physical problem of storage, and the enormous economic problem of over-population which must one day result. Can a 'corpse' inherit? Can an 'ice-widow' remarry? Is it euthanasia to freeze a relation, or is it murder not to?

There are now several organizations freezing people after clinical death and storing them in liquid nitrogen to await rescue by future technologyrevival, repair, rejuvenation, and improvement. Dare we be different? Dare we not? If we outgrow humanity (present style), what comes next? You may not like the author's answersbut you will surely find them interesting at least. At most, they will help you and your family escape oblivion and fulfill your grandest dreams.

"I don’t want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying." Woody Allen
Life extension is any method that lengthens an organism's life span, and the ultimate life span is immortality. To achieve that goal we now have two choices: live long enough to reach immortality, or be preserved until you can be revived. Advanced Molecular Nanotechnology will certainly be capable of reviving people from Biostasis (suspended animation). Cryonics, or low temperature body storage, has been our best hope for 'surviving' until that time. (And it's still the only backup plan!) Current Cryonics methods may already be adequate to get a person safely into storage, so I think it's worth a try! What do you have to lose? The most common response I get when introducing people to the idea of Biostasis is: Why do it? People seem to think the idea (1) won't work or (2) is undesirable. Ok... if it doesn't work, so what? You would be dead anyway! Religious beliefs of an afterlife aside, you might as well try.

    http://www.natasha.cc/cryonics.htm
Natasha Cryonics as a Safety Net Natasha Vita-More
Cryonics is the foremost safety-net available to us now in extending and preserving human life. Cryonics is the rapid cooling of a person's body in liquid nitrogen in order to preserve their DNA and tissue cells. At a later date, when new medical cures have been developed and the technology of molecular engineering, such as nanotechnology, becomes available, the hope is to repair the cell damage and recusisitate the person. The damage to be repaired is both from the disease which caused the person's death and the cells damage caused from freezing. Making the choice of whether or not to pursue cryonics varies in regard to a person's values and also to his or her understanding and acceptance of life extension and technology. Although many people are able to conceptualize what living much longer might be like, they often resist the many unknown factors that can and do sway them away from choosing cryonics. One of the main reasons a person might be reluctant to pursue cryonics as an alternative to being buried or cremated is the issue of whether or not a cryonically "suspended" patient can be resuscitate and solutions to possible side-effects and damage to the brain, such as memory loss and cell freezing damage. For the past decade, I have asked many people about their views on superlongevity and reversing the aging process. From my experience, resistance stems from concerns about human boredom our current inability to solve problems of disease and dying. In regards to cryonics, most resistance is due to our inability to confirm a successful resuscitation or reanimation.

    Resources for Cryonics and
    Life Extension Information
The field of *cryonics* deals with suspending humans at deep subzero temperatures in a biologically unchanging state, with expectations that medical advances and nanotechnology of the future will be able to restore them to full life and health and cure people of the diseases they died from and extend their lives for a long period of time. My personal hope is we can live forever. I would encourage you to browse through all these links, click on numerous reference links within these web sites and research the issue thoroughly. Understanding Cryonics and what it stands for requires an open mind, facing your most deepest feelings, fears, concerns, hopes and aspirations about life and death, understanding of where your moral, life-long, and family obligations are and what it is that you want from life for yourself, your close ones, and others. You and only you are able to decide for yourself if cryonics is for you. "Knowledge is Power..." We all know that. Learning about cryonics may leave you convinced in whatever you believe now and not change your perception of life, it may leave you wondering if you have been doing right things in your life and been treating others right, you may be more confused than before you began delving into it. Or it may change your way of life completely! I trust you'll be able to find out for yourself what's right and what's wrong for you. This is the ultimate question, isn't it?

    CRYONICS
Cryonics is the ultra-low-temperature preservation of anyone, as soon as possible after legal death. The goal of cryonics is to transport the hoplessly ill of today to a time in the future when cell and tissue repair technology will be available, and restoration to full function and health will be possible. Cures should exist for virtually all of today's diseases and debilities, including aging and extended periods of "clinical death". As human knowledge and medical technology continue to expand in scope, people considered beyond hope of restoration (by today's standards) will be returned to health. (This historical trend is very clear.) The coming control over living systems should allow fabrication of new organisms and sub-cell sized devices for repair and revival of patients waiting in cryonic suspension. The challenge for cryonicists today is to devise suspension techniques that will ensure the patients' survival.

    Is Cryonics Feasible?
    Stephen Barrett, M.D.
Cryonics is defined by its proponents as "the freezing of humans as shortly as possible after death with the hope of eventual return to life."Proponents claim that it is possible to preserve "with reasonable fidelity" the basic biologic components of the brain and that future technology will be able to repair brain damage caused by "imperfect preservation, premortal disease, and postmortem changes." [1] The current cost ranges from about $28,000 for preservation of just the brain within the head to more than $120,000 for whole-body freezing and perpetual maintenance in liquid nitrogen. The Cryonics Institute states: As soon as possible after legal death, a member patient is prepared and cooled to a temperature where physical decay essentially stops, and is then maintained indefinitely in cryostasis. When and if future medical technology allows, our member patients will be healed and revived, and awaken to extended life in youthful good health. Bacterial decay may stop, but that is not enough to make recovery possible. As noted by Michael Shermer, founding publisher of Skeptic Magazine:
