"There are more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy" William Shakespeare Welcome to CryptoCumbria. This is the Cumbrian based website for anyone, anywhere with an interest in cryptozoology, fortean zoology and animal folklore What is cryptozoology? - Find out here: OUR AIMS
The purpose of CryptoCumbria is to share and discuss information on, and discoveries in cryptozoology and other animal mysteries past and present. It is not intended to be a scholarly site, merely a focus for interested amateurs. Our focus is not restricted to Cumbrian cases - Some of the creatures on the picture at the top of this page are obviously NOT Cumbrian sightings! But we will try to look at all cases relating to Cumbria with more detail. We welcome any information on Cumbrian animal mysteries. Do you know anything about the out of place crocodile near Shap? We are particularly interested in the recent 'big cat' sightings in the Ravenglass area. Also, in the same part of the county, there are reports of wallabies living in the wild. We need information about these - or any other Cumbrian animal mysteries. Interested? Then check out our site and send us an

The journals are often jargon-filled and difficult to read, but they sometimes have real Cryptozoology gems in them. For example, a 1994 issue of Sulawesi Primate Newsletter had a paragraph in it about how a team of primatologists sponsored by National Geographic spotted, but did not catch a monitor lizard almost as big as a Komodo Dragon. The paragraph also said that the same area seemed to have the potential for several other discoveries of new animals. The journal Neotropical Primates recently had an article on the discovery of two large new fossil spider monkeys (see my paleontology news section).

Cryptozoology Books
Last updated September 19, 1999 This is a listing of all the Bufo's WEIRD WORLD BOOKS titles for cryptozoology. Cryptozoology is the study of animals unrecognized by science, including bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, etc. This original meaning has also been expanded to include strange animal behaviours, and what is called "fortean cryptozoology", in which the animals appear to be in some sense "paranormal." Please note that many other books also cover these topics. This list includes items that focus on them, either in the title or as the primary content. If you are interested in more information, see other reading lists.
The titles listed here are in alphabetical order. There are also some special pages of information about special cryptozoology topics:
Cryptozoology: El Chupacabras

Cryptozoology - Hairy Bipeds

Those titles are also all described here. These descriptions will be frequently expanded and more titles will be listed, so check back often.
Note: descriptions may come from copies in Bufo's collection, and may not reflect the more recent editions. When you click on a link, the information provided will be accurate for the one that you may decide to order. Titles in italics are out-of-print. A no obligation, free search for a used copy can be requested. The letters UK indicate a book will come from Amazon UK.

cryptozoology
Cryptozoology is literally , the study of hidden animals . It is the study of such creatures as the Australian bunyips Bigfoot, the chupacabra, and the Loch Ness monster . It is not a recognized branch of the science of zoology. Cryptozoology relies heavily upon testimonials and circumstantial evidence in the form of legends and folklore, and the stories and alleged sightings of mysterious beasts by indigenous peoples, explorers, and travelers. Since cryptozoologists spend most of their energy trying to establish the existence of creatures, rather than examining actual animals, they are more akin to psi researchers than to zoologists. Expertise in zoology, however, is asserted to be a necessity for work in cryptozoology, according to Dr. Bernard Heuvelmans, who coined the term to describe his investigations of animals unknown to science. See related entries under the cryptozoology topical listings.

Definition
The term Cryptozoology was coined by Dr. Bernard Heuvelmans after publication of his book On the Track of Unknown Animals in 1955. The first published use of the word Cryptozoology was in 1959 by Lucien Blancou. Cryptozoology is the study of hidden animals, not formally recognized by formal zoology but supported in some way by testimony from human beings. Most things of this nature have no explanation that we can prove with our limited sciences at this time. The term 'cryptozoology' derives from the Greek work 'kryptos', meaning 'hidden.' 'unknown,' 'secret,' 'enigmatic,' 'mysterious'; hence literally the 'study of hidden life'.
Theories
Many animals have gone extinct over the last few hundred years as a result of ecological disruption caused by humans migrating to new environments or direct attempts to exterminate "problem" species. An example is the marsupial wolf or Tasmanian Tiger (

CRYPTOZOOLOGY
Cryptozoology is the study of hidden animals (whether large or small), to date not formally recognized by what is often termed Western science or formal zoology but supported in some way by testimony (in its broadest definition) from a human beings. It is not an excat science as much of it goes beyond scientific explanation and more into the metasciences. The term 'cryptozoology' derives from the Greek work 'kryptos', meaning 'hidden.' 'unknown,' 'secret,' 'enigmatic,' 'mysterious'; hence literally the 'study of hidden life'. The term Cryptozoology was coined by Dr. Bernard Heuvelmans in his personal correspondence among colleagues in the 1950s, after the 1955 French publication of his book On the Track of Unknown Animals . The first published use of the word Cryptozoology was in 1959 by Lucien Blancou. As I work in Metsciences I believe that most of the animals discussed in Cryptozoology are hybrid species (at least as far as our third dimensional reality is concerned). They exist in our realms or those that are parallel. They are able to enter our reality at certain times - then they leave - seem to disappear - much like UFO's and alien entities ehich have been witnessed by thousands of people throughout the planet's history. Soem species have always lived here - some have evolved through millennium - other just come in and out and are probabaly as confused about being in our realm as we are at seeming them. Perhaps in your dreamtime you 'popped into' their reality and startled them by your strange appearance and odd behavior!
